Discussion: POWER HITTERS

I watched a Ray DeMarini video with Larry Carter swinging the bat for speed checks, then hitting off a tee speed after impact. The purpose was to show bat speed and then bat speed after impact. The best power hitters drive through the ball and finish their follow through after impact thus losing less speed and hitting the ball harder and further. Good eye hand helps batters swing their guts out and still make great contact. Lots of really big dudes can't swing with all their might and still hit the ball as solid as some smaller players. I also believe hitters that bat opposite of how they throw have an advantage with their strong side pulling the bat through the ball.

Discussion: ASA Bats

I know everyone has a preference as to bat characteristics so my opinion will mean nothing to many reading this, but the DeMarini Flipper is the hottest ASA bat for the 52/300 balls. In my area we have one really big ASA tournament a year. The past two years they hit the 52/300 ball. Year one players were swinging several brands of bats on Friday night and Saturday morning. By Saturday afternoon teams were passing down the Flipper from one batter to the next. By Sunday all four teams left had nothing but the Flipper and a Miken 750X in the batters box. The 750X was the only 30 oz. players could find. No one had a heavy DeMarini. The guys that continued to use the Miken were not hitting it nearly as far or hard as the Flipper and they were the players that usually out hit everyone. Year Two the Flipper was the bat of choice for over 90% and the final four teams on Sunday used nothing but the Flipper. You could not compete without a Flipper. Just what I've witnessed locally.

Discussion: Intentional walk rule

I think the biggest reason players hate to walk in league games is the fact that some players have no senior leagues near them and are forced to travel great distances to get three or four at bats. If that is the situation an intentional walk would stink. I like the sound Omar's league rule. At least tempt the dude to swing. We had a senior league in Knoxville up until last year when there wasn't enough teams to continue, I had no place to play within forty miles of home. I would be upset to travel that far and never see a pitch. I choose to just take BP instead of travel for three or four at bats. Sounds like to me if that dude gets that upset with the walks he should be taking BP instead!

Discussion: New Rules

I don't believe 100 plus teams will be adding two or more players. I believe. I think SSUSA knows when a team is trying to add 6-7 players there's a problem. Especially when 2-3 are 55 major plus players.

Discussion: New Rules

Maybe SSUSA should contact players from the original roster that aren't on the new roster to see if they were cut to allow for new players. SSUSA has every players info so check some as to why they aren't playing. You take any of the top ten 50 Major teams in the country and let them cut two or three of their worst players and add two or three 55 Major plus studs and you just bought a championship!

Discussion: Mikens New Ultra II Black debuts.....

I will say that I agree with Tim about Miken having bad customer service in the early days of the Ultra and Ultra II bats. I called Miken and got a return number for a busted Ultra II that had a warranty and valid receipt. When the bat was being processed they declined it because the warranty ran out after I got my return number. It was shipped with a good warranty but after they got around to processing the bat the warranty ran out. I talked with the rep and he said it was their policy to decline any bat with no warranty. Miken was head and shoulders ahead of all other composite bats at that time (2002) so they just screwed me over. I havenever bought another new Miken. I've only swung the Melee and the Dudley since playing 50+ four years ago. Screw me once shame on you. They will never get another chance so there will be no shame on me!

Discussion: 2016 dates for World Masters Championship?

I would love to see the 50-55 age group play either October 7-9 or 14- 16. Most schools are on Fall Break during those dates and more families could attend. As a teacher it would prevent me from missing work.

Discussion: No batters box, Umpire calling batter out for hitting outside the batters box

The problem I have with an umpire calling a batter Out for stepping out of the box when they're no lines visible is the fact the rule states you must be completely out of the box! This means if any part of your cleat touches any part of the chalk line you are not completely out of the box! This rule leaves a lot of interpretation up to the ump and we all know some umpires just love to show up the batter! This call should only be made when the evidence is so obvious that no one would consider arguing the call. If the pitcher has to duck to get out of the way of the batters swing, then the dude was probably out of the box!!! Stepping on the plate is an easy call no matter what the boxes looks like.

Discussion: Original gray Miken Ultra (without center rod insert) VS. current MIken 2 piece endloads

Tri18 is right that the biggest difference was the ball back in 2002 when the grey Miken hit the market. Another big difference was the metal rods placed in the bat handle that made the Ultra II less end loaded. Several players from the U.S.Vinyl Miken team told me that removing the bolt and replacing it with a rubber stopper added between 20-40 feet to your distance and created faster line drives through the infield.

Discussion: The care of senior bats

Definitely the ball. Composite bats are at their hottest right before they break! The last 50 swings are the best. In U-trip Conference tournaments and other Worlds like WSL and so on they bat test for bats exceeding the .240 compression limit. Most of the Conference players only get two or three tournaments before their bats fail because the walls are flexing beyond the limit.

Discussion: Hitting from tee vs. hitting pitched ball

I would think a pitched ball would travel further because of increased trampoline effect off a composite bat. I throw a lot up and hit them pretty good but nothing like a pitched ball.

Discussion: Another Safe or out Question

Sure wish we had that umpire where we play. We had bases loaded and two outs, I ask the umpire before stepping in the box to check with the scorekeeper about our home run situation. We were allowed six then outs. He calls up to the press box and she says we have one left. I hit a home run and the other teams coach runs out of the dugout screaming out three. He shows his book to the ump who takes it up to the scorekeeper. Their coach had marked an extra home run on a player that had hit a triple and scored on a sac in the first inning. The scorekeeper had not circled 3B so she could not remember. The ump ended up calling me out for the third out. That was in the bottom of the 7th and us down two runs. Crazy game.

They used the Stote last weekend in Birmingham in 90 degree heat. The ball jumped off the bat. It was hard to keep it in the field of play.

Discussion: Tribute to one of the best!!!

No disrespect taken Nancy. When you figure home run frequency you divide the total number of AT BATS by the number of Home Runs hit. No one can have a ratio better than 1.000 since that means you are hitting it over the fence every single at bat. His frequency of home runs was 1 in every 1.29 at bats. When doing batting averages and on base percentages you divide hits by at bats.

Actually he hit 303 home runs in 390 at bats for a 1.29 ratio in 1983! He was playing for Elite Coating. I remember using the Green Elliott in 1985 and 1986. One heck of a bat at that time.

Discussion: SSUSA shares DBO rationale Senior

That was with Worth PST and ESTs. The other team asked the ump with could go one more inning to see if we could get 100. It was the Championship game 80-29. If it wasn't fun the other team wouldn't have wanted to see 100. The ump said no even though it was only 2:30. They even told him they wouldn't bat in the bottom. That ump was a kill joy just like players that want DBO.

Scored 80 in three innings. Had 34 runs in the first inning. Was 4-4 with 4 in one inning. Ended up 10-10 with seven. It was the SEAA One Pitch State.
