In the many years that I have done tournaments, I have only had one batter that I had to call out for being out of the front of the box, and it was because they were out of home runs, and he was trying to peel the pitcher. Hmm, that is a lot of outs in that statement. Neck10, good to see you. That darn gate still doesn't always latch. |

| June 10, 2021 Nancy Allen | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Carrying bat to first base SSUSA uses the same rule as USA Softball (formerly ASA) which is the oldest softball association, and they haven't seen a need to change it. The only confusion comes from players who are used to other associations' rule. I always explain (in fun) that a player is allowed to carry the bat as long as they want as long as he doesn't hit anybody with it. I have never seen anyone carry the bat past first or do anything that would harm anyone else. Turning2, I have only ever seen Dave suggest that if a person has a rule change suggestion that they submit it through the actual submission process. He has probably said a thousand times that no actions are taken by posts on this site on any subject. |

| May 15, 2021 Nancy Allen | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Infield fly rule RG, yes, it is a routine pop up to an infielder with less than two outs, runners on at least 1B and 2B. It is umpire's judgement. I didn't see the play that you described so won't comment directly on it. Most of the time it is really straight forward, but there are those instances where umpire's judgement is not perfect. The arc is deeper than you thought it was on the hit ball; the infielder moves completely the wrong way; the player can't see the ball or has zero fielding ability; I even once had a game with a 40 MPH wind (yes, Dave, it was Midwest) that the ball would normally have been to the 2nd baseman and floated to RC instead. I have also been yelled at because I called it with a SS that had great range and lateral movement or to a five man infield that popped up behind 2B. 90% of the time they catch that ball. I was correct, but players don't always agree. Calls like infield fly, foul ball, and time are definitely calls that you cannot take back, right or wrong. To add another wrinkle, a routine pop up may not be the same based on what kind of game it is. Recreational league vs competitive league, 40+ vs 65+ vs 85+, adult vs 12 and under are examples of potential ability levels. I had a nice discussion with a 70+ pitcher. It was an infield fly if fair that went foul. He said, yes, it was a fairly simple pop up, but at our age my catcher and I just can't get to it anymore. He was right; it was not routine for them. So this is just an umpire's perspective. In your example the umpire could have been right or wrong as could you. Judgements differ. |
| May 8, 2021 Nancy Allen | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Maryland Classic Apr 30-May2 Well, over 20 years ago we did what I fondly call spring training by meeting up with teams in Florida and playing at their chosen field. One day we met up with the Sons of Beaches (a Canadian team that ended up being snowbirds together). They self umpired it. When it was Coachie's turn, he called one of them safe at 2B. He said You're crazy; I was clearly out and walked back to the dugout. When we returned home to Indy our Johnny G announced over the PA that Florida had just called, and Nancy was welcome to umpire there anytime but that Coachie was banned from umpiring in their state ever again. I really miss those days...and Coachie and Johnny. Spring training was always my favorite senior softball. |

| March 16, 2021 Nancy Allen | Topic: Players looking to join a team Discussion: DENNIS Sixshooter, welcome to Indy. The competitive league starts this Thursday weather permitting. If you do Facebook, their site is Central IN Senior Softball Competitive. The park would not be your best source of information. Right now we do not have a 60 tournament team but do have 55. Most of those play in that league. I am aware of a 60 team trying to form in an eligible state depending on your player history. Please feel free to reach out to me if you want information on anything here. Our SSUSA qualifier is scheduled next month at Midwest. There is also some indoor hitting practice at the Sport Zone which is near Midwest. They hit and solve World problems. |

Then I saw Michael's comment and reread it and does not absolutely say that. As you indicated, a defensive coach would change the terminology and possible outcome. At the time we also had ASA, ISA, WASA, and Utrip in the area, and none of them had that rule. The first year everything was straight up. My state director and few others argued that it gave an unfair home team advantage. I tried to point out that was equal for both teams. They wanted to take away the 1 up for the home team in the last inning. I told them as a coach that if they did that I would always take visitor as the rule change gave them an advantage on homeruns. Of course they changed the rule the second year. That logic just isn't sound to you or me but is what they did. |

| Nov. 30, 2020 Nancy Allen | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Ralph Adams WOOD27, I was friends with Ralph for over 25 years. It is too bad that you did not get to meet him. He was a great guy. At least he was doing something that he loved when he passed. His visitation was tough, but a lot of our friends were there. The funeral was on Facebook live. There were quite a few amusing stories about him during that. His sense of humor was not quite as dry as my belated husband's (even Ralph talked to me many times about how he could blow you away with a "Really?"), but he was very intelligent and could crack a good joke. I miss my friend and talking with him, but I know that he is in a better place. |
