Discussion: Just Curious

Bobby Chapp was from the Detroit area and was very likely one of if not the best shortstops of his time. From the 70s thru the 80s and into the 90’s if you played against him you would quickly learn if you hit it to him you were going to be out. One of the classiest guys there was. Sadly, approximately 10 years years ago he passed away on the field during this tournament. Starting the following year the tournament was renamed the Bobby Chapp Memorial.

T2, I’m not trying to be critical of you, but your rationale the B/R wouldn’t have time to pass the runner going from first to second is strictly conjecture on your part for the purpose of this rule discussion.
If the rules allow for a dead ball appeal for missing a base why would they not allow for a runner passing a runner on the bases?

tc4whir, If nine players are required to start a game and team A has only 8 players and lets say team B has 11 there are many local house leagues (men’s, women’s, coed and senior) that will allow team B to supply a catcher when team A is in the field. Some leagues would leave it up to team B. Other leagues simply won’t allow it.
Personally I always make sure whatever the rule is, that it’s in writing.

T2, I’m not understanding something here.
You stated that in my scenario you wouldn’t call the BR out for passing the runner going from 1st to 2nd. You would rule ground rule double, runners get two bases without incidence.
In BJ’s scenario you stated if the runners fail to tag in order the two awarded bases that would trump the written rule as you specified.—which is correct.
Why wouldn’t my scenario trump the written rule?

Yes, you are correct marcster13. Good catch.
I should have typed in touched the scoring plate or crossed the scoring line.

Discussion: Change in the batters box rule

Perhaps I’m a bit biased but of all the associations One Nation has the best and easiest rule to understand on this. The batters back foot (rignt foot for a righty and left foot for a lefty) cannot go up any further than the front edge of the plate upon contact.

Let’s call runner at third R3, at second R2, runner at first R1 and the batter B1.
Your correct that is the ruling but due to what occurred in this situation it becomes a timing play. R3 coming in from third touches the plate scores. Since R2 had not touched the plate when B1 passed R1 going from first to second his run would be disallowed since it was after the third out of the inning (B1 passing R1 on between first and second)
Senior ball might be different so I’ll defer to BJ on that one.

Bottom of the 7th inning. Bases loaded, two outs. Visiting team up by one run.
Batter hits a fair ball for a ground rule double. Runner at third has touched home. Runner from second is between 3rd and home when the batter-runner passes the runner from first between first second. What’s the ruling?

Franjan the solution to your problem is to have two strong hitters batting behind him. That protects him.

Randall to answer your question from 4 posts above:
Yes, the umpire should have called that runner out for going into the dugout area before crossing the scoring line.
The umpire did well to notice it but a no call was a mistake.

Discussion: I'm sure I got it wrong---What would be the right call

In all the years I’ve umpired tournament ball I’ve never had a case where a base coach intentionally kicked a ball away from a fielder trying to secure it off an errant throw. Base coaches should know to get out of fhe way. I’ve had this happen in league ball but they just throw it back to the pitcher. I simply tell them that unless time is called not to do that.
BTW, maybe there is somewhere but I’ve never been on team, witnessed another team or heard of any slow-pitch team who has an individual who’s there strictly as a “defensive coach”.

Dave i sure do. I’m not sure where the one up rule originated but that was the rule when we played NSA. And it was a rule that I agreed with. Once the hr limits was reached by both teams the visiting team never wanted to be one up in hrs in the last inning. When we were fortunate enough to do our part we would tell our pitcher to serve up a meat ball!!

Before SSUSA moved their worlds to Las Vegas I remember playing the LVSSA worlds. At that time it seemed LVSSA was a tougher tournament. I don’t recall the umpiring to be bad in any outlandish way. I do remember a strange rule. Even if you had home runs left the home team couldn’t hit a home run to win the game in the open inning. Perhaps I missed something but I never understood the reasoning behind that rule.

Discussion: Rule interpretation

AJC, many moons ago I played in an indoor winter league which had the same rules. Tagging was allowed and runners had the option of running past the bag. Any turn toward the next base they were liable to be tagged out. At first it was weird but we eventually got used to it. For us it was a great way to keep our swing and throwing active thru the winter to be ready to go for outdoor ball once the season began.

Franjan based on what you’ve posted here it appears to me (again I’d have to read the rule and see the play) that if the fielder is leaning to the right of the bag the runner has the option of running by the bag on the other side. Or he can stop on the bag on the other side. Question I would have:
Since runners can overrun either side of 2nd or 3rd and not be liable to be tagged out going back to the base would that also be the case if a runner touched the base and ran past it (if they initially avoided a collision)?

Discussion: Commit line abuse

My opinion here: Runner on first or first and third with less than two outs. I’ve long thought it’s a smart play for an infielder to let an infield pop up drop if the batter doesn’t run it out, especially in tournament play. Run it out!!
But the senior rule is the senior rule

Interesting situation. First and foremost I’d have to read the entire written rule and see the play before I make a definitive call.
Going by your description of the rule you might be right in your ruling.
Does it specify anywhere in the rule that a runner advancing to a base MUST go on one side of the bag or the other if there is play at that bag?
If yes, then your call would be right.
If not then going by your description of the play I’m not certain how that runner can be called out for arriving safely at third base when you say the throw pulled the third baseman off the bag.
