That's probably why the Rated brain trust moved the pitcher that "one hit us" to right field the next game. I am sure the "one hit wonder" would have caught that ball if he wasn't stuck on the mound... "One hit wonder" now that's a nick name I can remember;-) |
| Dec. 15, 2014 Tim Millette | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Automatic Move Ups Leon..I haven't followed this thread but...is a guy that pitched a one hitter against our "major plus" team while playing for another major plus team complaining about having to play major plus to the point they traveled across the country to play down?? I don't understand?? Did this marvelous team that one hit us actually run all the way to Georgia for a major instead of driving a few hours to Vegas to Play SSUSA Major Plus? Leon, Is that what happened? Or is there something else evolved? Maybe they found discounted tickets to the east that were cheaper then the price of 30 gallons of gas????? You gotta remember gas was expensive last summer..I think it got up to around $4 a gallon down south. I thought that rated team was good enough to at least try to compete in Plus last year???? Kinda like we "tried".. If I remember correctly????? Their catcher/coach/sponsor was a pretty funny guy. I remember their shortstop was good but...I can't remember any one else? Oh...I think I do remember...wasn't that guy that used to drive up to play with Ranaldi the rated pitcher?? I thought his name was Geoge or something like that..not Ron You remember Leon...the guy that didn't pitch when we beat them the next time we faced them. I think that's the case because I seem to remember saying...what coach doesn't start a guy that one hit a team the next time they play them;-) Anyway...isn't senior ball fun? We get to act like five year olds well into our late 50s. |
| Dec. 15, 2014 Tim Millette | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: "Weight Transfer, A Mistunderstood Key to Explosive Hip Rotation" Swing Makeover 22 Letting go with your top hand should not effect your bat speed at contact unless/which does happen occasionally...the hitter slows down his hand speed before he finishes hitting through the ball. It's not guaranteed but a do know a couple top hand release hitters that ended up with elbow/forearm issues latter in life. |
| Dec. 14, 2014 Tim Millette | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: "Weight Transfer, A Mistunderstood Key to Explosive Hip Rotation" Swing Makeover 22 My view is...seniors should not waiste any time trying to learn to make a seniors swing look like the younger "elites". For the most part those guys have purchased (steroids) their ability to shorten their swings and still have HUGE bat speed. I'd call it the Bonds factor. They also mostly play against USSSA pitching which is like comparing apples to oranges for our senior games. Also understand that many of the younger elite power hitters have had to become pull hitters because the elite events are being playing on baseball fields with the shortest distance to the fence being down the lines. Our senior fields are symmetrical/usually 300 feet all around. While talking about baseball field demensions..there is a reason the park gets bigger the farther you go from the foul lines...linear extension hits the ball farther and...it's easier to get extension hitting a ball alley to alley...so don't waiste your time becoming a pull hitter...there is a reason it's called the power alley. |
| Dec. 14, 2014 Tim Millette | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: "Weight Transfer, A Mistunderstood Key to Explosive Hip Rotation" Swing Makeover 22 Ken, your swing evaluation two posts up is right on, although I think we see proper weight shift and arc of the bat slightly different based on some of your videos I has seen. I assumed when you were talking rotational hitting you were talking about the craze that's taken over many baseball schools of thought..ie...short arming your linear arm extension. In the end...tutoring senior players limbs/backs/legs/eyes..ok..lets just say BODIES, into a successful softball swing is more of a Rube Goldberg then an exact science. The first thing I ask a new senior student is..do you have any ailments that limit your mobility? After that question is answered...most often I have to pull out my Rube Goldberg senior softball hitting book. The power chapter is the shortest chapter..it's one page long...it says.. I don't know how we are going to get there YET but somehow we need to get the bat head from here to there moving as fast as possible. |

The main reason rotational hitting is often used in baseball is because the batter doesn't have the hand speed to catch up to the fastball. In senior softball...no pitcher can throw a fastball past the hitter so..if your a senior player shortening your linear extension by rotational hitting is cheating yourself of as much as 20% of your bat speed. There is a reason bats cannot be longer then 34 inches it limits your linear extension. If you doubt my believe on this subject??? Just look back to the top precomposite softball players swings. Linear swings is what was required in the aluminum era...unless of coarse..you stuck a needle in your azz. That same linear extension still gives you more bat speed then short arming your swing with a rotational swing you do not need to use because the pitcher has no way to throw a fast ball at you. |

I figured you guys were making a 55 team when you added a "chicken" to your pot of stew. The more teams the better. It sounds like Northwest Legends are a year away from getting back together for a 55 team also. We are looking at 50 majors and or, the 55 Major Plus World. Our guys are really looking forward to being one of the younger teams on the block instead of aging out.. This senior stuff is interesting...you get to see many/most players drastically slow down for individual divisions as they get to the back half of the age group. As the say...the new young is 55 or 60 or 65 or 70. And...... The new old is 53/54 or 58/59 or 63/64 or 68/69... |

Other then the nighthawks and our MTC 55 varsity team (we will be called the MTC JV because they own all the "hardware") how many teams can we expect in our new age group Plus Division? any info would be helpful |

For some reason when I hear Bruce Wood I think of Bunca or Jimmies. In my younger days I was a Pro Team, American Reality/Budweiser SF, Dan Smith player. Who'd you play for? I to played younger ball latter in life..major World Series till 43, B worlds at 48/Disney, C Worlds at 49/at Liberty Park. Glad there is senior ball...it's nice being one of the young guys every five years. |
| Dec. 4, 2014 Tim Millette | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Home plate Mat size change? BW, I will agree that USSSA has not evolved into anything special at this point. I paid no attention to how there worlds went but..I would guess they didn't do well. On the USSSA issue...at least in the plus division they running a glorified homerun contest giving everything the power hitters wanted..it started out as 15 hrs then walks..I don't know how it ended up but that more or less killed it for me. Usssa also decided not to use the already set SSUSA division format of AA, AAA, Major and Plus. A big mistake as far as I am concerned. USSSA also turned down running their world earlier in the year...maybe playing thier world the same weekend as a couple of their Big Conference events.. Maybe during the Smoky Mountain Classic in Maryville run the Eastern Senior Worlds except having it start on Sunday at Sandy Springs/late Saturday if possible at the satellite fields and end Monday night at sandy springs. Then maybe after a Conference event in the west running the Western senior worlds Saturday night and ending Monday.. They did a smart move trying to run their western worlds in SoCal where there are many teams except I think they should have run their worlds about 1 month before SSUSA not after it. I doubt very mich that USSSA will walk away from senior ball...they will tweak it till it works. |

How about getting back on the subject of what would be the positive and negative effects on the game with an enlarged mat. Less walks Batters wouldn't be able to sit around waiting for that cookie Pitchers could use more angles with their pitch Pitchers would not get behind in the count as often and need to throw cookies Pitchers would have a better chance of hitting the mat while pitching from the back of the box(giving them more reaction time) Pitchers with the ability to throw breaking balls would have a better chance to hit the mat. Batters woukd have to cover the outside corner of a larger mat/thereby requiring them to stand closer to the mat..which would give the pitcher a better chance to jam the batter with an inside pitch Now I know...according to many...I have shown my ignorance so...maybe you geniuses can use this as a teachable moment and help me out. |

| Dec. 3, 2014 Tim Millette | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Home plate Mat size change? My views on the offensive side of the senior game can be summed up easily. I think the bats/ball combo are dangerous, but I think getting ride of the combo is almost impossible because of so many seniors living a offensive game they never got to experience when they were young. I also think it's evident that pitchers more or less have to serve up batting practice in games (pitcher catchers gear, homerun restrictions because it's so easy to hit home runs and run limits for innings) So yes...I would support almost any new rule to give a pitcher a new "advantage" against hitters. It looks like Fred plays in the upper senior levels that allow an 11th defensive fielder...if that's the case...his views on pitching should not be considered when talking about the younger (only 10 defensive players) programs. It's admerable to be able to play at 81 years old..but we need to agree that the game he is playing compared to the under 60? Programs have almost nothing in common. As for woodie and my view of many being afraid/scared of loosing some of the huge advantages senior hitters get...Its my view and I will stand by it |

Pitchers are already at huge risks...and hitting a softball is way to easy. And one more thing..this is directed at Fred S... you claim to be a pitcher and want a small strike zone??? Is that because you have super accurate/dominate pitching powers or is because your a vary weak hitter that's scared to fail much more often because of a bigger mat? Twits idea isn't bad either...heck move the height to 14 feet, reduce the size of the haters box, ENCORCE THE BATTERS BOX..widen the width of the rubber to four feet |
| Nov. 20, 2014 Tim Millette | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Suggestions for 2015 Don't listen to yet another catcher/ah/1B hitter crying about the dbo in Plus ball. The new rule made for a better game/kept the bracket closer to on time/and I didn't hear one complaint during a Plus tourney. I will agree with one post on this subject..if your 60+ they should. It be outs once you reach the limit. If your 65+ every ball hit over the fence should count as a home run. And...let the starting pitchers decide before every game whether they want to start with a 0-0 count of 1-1..If they don't agree..it's automatically 1-1. That way...any player that doesn't like the 1-1 count only has to lobby his own pitcher to not use it...now..at that time..I'd tell the guy crying about 1-1 to learn to be a starting pitcher. |
