Nancy, well, there are very few teams in AA right now, so I don't see how making an even lower division would encourage any more participation.

Again, I don't see you this is a hard play for a 3rd baseman to make that knows the rules. You see the guy standing next to the line. You move your hand with the ball towards the runner. If he doesn't touch his foot down over the line you tag him. If he does, you throw to home. I would fake a tag first and make the runner commit. If he didn't then I would reach the extra couple of inches and tag him.

I'm with JohnBob. Seems like a very easy play for a 3rd baseman who knows the rules to make.

Discussion: Partial vs Full knee replacement

I had both. A partial (kept the outer part) 7 years ago when I was 55 and a full last December. I'm 7 years older but I have recovered faster from the total knee replacement than from the partial. I think that I am about a year ahead of where I was in my recovery from my partial at this point. It doesn't bother me at all. Even a few years after my partial my knee would swell a little and be sore for a day or two after a weekend of playing on it.

Every knee and surgery is different, but at your age, if I were you I would go with the total knee replacement. I went into my partial with the flawed thinking that I would recover faster and have better use of my knee with a partial knee replacement than a total.

Dave, I say I would like it, but I am still working fulltime and just put in my vacation for the year. Between my 55 and 60 teams, I used all but 1 day of my allotment for our 5 out of state tournaments!

Thanks for the explanation, Dave. The only other option I see (and I am sure you would get more complaints doing this) would be to start the 60's prior to Session #1 on Monday-Thursday! If you did this, then I could play the 60's, 55's and 65's consecutively next year, but spending a week and a half in Vegas would probably not be good for my retirement savings!

I had thought about posting something similar to this a few weeks ago. I'm 64 and play both 55 and 60 so I have to choose one team since they both play on the same weekend. Doing what Crusher23 suggests would allow me to do that. I'm sure that there are more 50 teams than any other age level, so there would have to be some consideration into how many teams at each level are playing to make sure that there are enough teams. But it sure would be nice to be able to play with both teams.

I did do that with 50's and 55's when they played on consecutive weekends, but it was cheaper for me to fly home and back again rather than stay in Las Vegas during the week. So from my standpoint, having them on consecutive weekends is not as important as having them on different weekends.

Discussion: Knee Surgery or replacement

Go see another doctor. You're not too young if a knee replacement is what you need. There's no reason to suffer for several more years just to meet some arbitrary age goal. I had a partial knee replacement 7 years ago at 56 and had it revised with a full knee replacement this December. I was back hitting in February and in the last couple of weeks am back to hitting as well as I was before the latest replacement. Running is still a little difficult but that will come in the next few months.

Discussion: Still waiting for a rational answer

I was not trying to nudge the decision in a different direction. I was just curious when all the R/I discussion came up as I had always thought that you could play major plus at your age level regardless of your R/I.

So does this mean that a 60-year-old who plays down on a 50 major plus team would not be eligible to play on a 60 major plus team because of a difference of 2 on the R/I scale?

Capt Kirk, I would look at another surgeon if yours is skeptical about you playing again. Many people are doing it and I have not heard of one person (I am sure there are some out there) who are not playing after TKR. I had a partial replacement 7 years ago and have played ever since then. Next week, I go back in and get a TKR on that knee due to some issues with the 1/3 of the knee (and ligaments) that was not replaced. I hope to be back on the field hitting by April 2018.

Discussion: When did our generation become such cry babies

I don't think all teams with a scoring difference between pool games and bracket games do it for the sinister reason you state to "keep their numbers in line". Many teams, and we are one, view it as an opportunity to get some reserve players more playing time. Without these guys we could not play throughout the year and handle injuries. I'm glad that you look at seeding games differently from bracket games in making your determinations.

Discussion: When did our generation become such cry babies

This is a GSA tournament and I should have put it in my comments. It is billed as a "World" tournament. Our team would have loved it if some of the 55 Major teams from around the "world" would have entered, but none did. We were the only one. Since this is an in state tournament for us we wanted to play so that we could get some games in before Phoenix, so we dropped down to the 50's. There was not a 50 Major bracket so our only option was 50 AAA, which should be equivalent to our 55 Major team. I suspect that L.Martin's team wanted to do the same thing...get some games in and since there were no 50 Major teams they were going to play 50 AAA and give up runs and play by the AAA rules.

The same thing happened to us in the same tournament. We are a 55 Major team and there was no one to play in our age division so we were going to play against the 50 AAA's. According to SSUSA's matrix the two are equivalent. The director told our coach that too many 50 AAA teams complained so we could not enter the tournament.

Or how about this novel idea. Enter the scores into an excel spreadsheet as the games are played then do the seeding in 10 minutes after the last pool game is played like it should take...not 2 hours like it did for the 55 Major 30 team bracket.

Discussion: Durability of Total Knee Replacements

I had a partial knee replacement (makoplasty) December 2010, so I am approaching my 6 year anniversary. As far as it wearing out, I will worry about that when it happens. Besides, by the time it wears out hopefully the surgery options will be even better than now. Like others here, I had constant pain and the deciding factor was not being able to sleep at night due to the pain. I never go all my ROM back (it's about 115 now), but it doesn't limit me in anything I want to do on the softball field.

I went back to my ortho last month because I thought I might have an ACL or other ligament problem unrelated to the knee replacement. Turns out it was probably a hamstring strain. He took x-rays of my knee and said everything looked great.

I rarely have pain. The most is sometimes slight swelling and aching after playing all day on it but it returns to normal after a day. I probably should ice it after playing all day, but I don't.

Softball was important enough for me to risk shortening the lifespan of my new knee.
