Discussion: SO CAL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS - Women’s 50s Major

I still work and I don't like having to use all my vacation for softball either, but I understand it (it's even worse this year for me playing on a 65 team that plays during the week in addition to my 55 and 60 teams).

With a 5 game guarantee instead of 2 like a straight double elimination tournament, you have about 1/3 more games to play in the tournament. For 10 teams you need 40 games for bracket play and 15 more for the pool games. So if a double elimination tournament takes two full days to play those 40 games, you need the extra day to play the other 15 games for a 5 game guarantee. And as Dave pointed out, there are not an unlimited amount of fields so they have to be shared by all age groups, genders, and skill levels.

Biskit is a great guy and hitter. Would be a key addition to any 50's team. Good luck finding a team, Biskit.

Benji4, it's not all about our batting. We were eliminated from the World tournament a couple of years ago when our pitcher did his job and got the batter to pop-up in the bottom of the buffet inning. Unfortunately for us, that pop-up went about 278 feet for a home run that cost us the game. After the game, the person who hit it said it was the first home run he had hit in over 20 years and he wished his grandchildren were there to witness it.

FOFO, yes I have played at Shadow Rock. And a league bat is still not going to keep line drives to the gap and outfield popups from going out of some of the parks at BLD that are little league sized. As I said I will play wherever they put us, which is hopefully Dodger Stadium or Wrigley. Thanks for the well wishes and good luck to you this season as well.

Wrigley: L-280, LC-288, C-295, RC-288, R-280
Dodger: L-270, LC-300, C-315, RC-300, R-270
Crosley: L-270, LC-280, C-295, RC-280, R-270

Dave, Sure thing I will look you up at BLD and we can talk. It will be much better than this message board so you can see my intent and I can personally show you that I don't envy your job of having to match so many teams to fields. And I am not just complaining but trying to make a positive suggestion.

I'll be playing with Texas Crush 60's, #18. See you there.

Dave and we saw posts about the fields being too short, so it was obviously of some concern. And as you said then, some of the BLD fields are shorter than the 275' Kingman fields.

I realize that you are not going to change this based on one person's input (no matter how valid it is!! :) ), but can you at least put the 60 Major Plus teams on the largest fields at BLD? Thanks for your consideration.

Dave, I know it is a huge and unthankful job matching over 200 teams with fields. I am hoping by "tentative" that means there is a chance that input can be considered before making the field assignments final. I understand if it can't, so I don't want this to come across as complaining. I'll play wherever you put us.

With that said, I don't understand why Major Plus teams are ever put on the BLD fields. They are way too short. Line drives to the gaps become home runs and pop-ups also carry out of the park. The men's 60 Major+ are tentatively scheduled for BLD.

To me, it would make more sense to swap the 16 60-AAA teams to BLD and move the 11 60-Major+ & 60-Major teams to Shadow Rock and Hollywood where the fences are more suited for Major+ and Major teams.

Just my 2 cents worth. If it is too late now, I hope that you will consider this in the future. Thanks for all you do to allow us to keep playing this game at our age.

Thanks, everyone who recommended us or had kind words to say about us. I am happy to say that we will be joining EnviroVac for the 2019 season. Looking forward to being a rookie again in the 65 division while continuing to be the old guy on my 60 and 55 teams!

Omar, thanks for clearing that up. Sorry I misinterpreted your comments. Yes, I realize that it is difficult to find a team that can take all three of us, but we really want to stay together. None of us are desperate. I'm playing on a 55 and a 60 team already, Joe hits 5 or 6 times a week and enjoys that as much as playing tournaments and TB is keeping busy in North TX.

Don5, we can all wear our Groucho Marx noses, mustache and glasses as disguises. Do you think we can sneak past Dave like that?

Omar, I can't tell if you were being sarcastic or not. I am not exaggerating about Joe Read who plays SS. Thanks again mad dog. Hope you find a team too.

Three 65 Major Plus players looking to play on a 65 Major Plus team West of the Mississippi or a 65 Major team bordering Texas. All three of us have good power and are .700 to .800 hitters. We have played 50, 55 and 60 Major Plus with Hendricks Sports winning many world championships in SSUSA and SPA in each age division. Not enough of our former teammates are still playing or have reached 65 to form a team from Texas. Let us know if your team is interested.

Joe Read: SS, 2B
Thomas Brown (aka TB): RF, Catcher
Murray Williams: 3B, 1B, 2B

thanks,

Thanks Dave, that's what I thought it was but was just a little confused about the ability to play down age groups vs. counting against the out of rating players. I guess I should be looking at everything as equivalent rating rather than actual rating within a specific age group.

Please help me clarify this for me. In the example above, the 75 Major Plus player may play 70 major or 65 AAA. But no matter what age group he plays he is still considered one of 3 out of rating exemptions for his team? So even if he played 50 Major (5 age divisions lower, he would still count as one of the 3 Major Plus players that 50 Major team is allowed to have? Thanks for your help on this!

I just updated my card online. Is there a way to upload a current photo to be used on my card. My card has my photo from when I was 50 and I will be 65 for the 2019 season and I would like to use a more current photo.

Nancy, I had no thoughts on how to increase the participation on the low end. I don't want to sound elitist, but I don't think that it needs to be increased on the low end for tournament ball. Most guys just starting back up or having never played before probably are not that interested in tournament play and leagues are a better fit for them. Or local, non-sanctioned tournaments that would not involve travel.
