June 9 ICELADY Men's 60 23 posts | What a poorly run tournament! My team waited for 30 minutes to begin our 8am game on Saturday morning. Game didn't start until 8:30. The opposing team had never been told what seed they were even after they made numerous attempts to contact someone. One of my teammates was sucessful in calling a member of the opposing team or they would have forfeited. There were no official scorekeepers. When the umpire asked me to keep the books & the scoreboard, I assumed (not smart on my part) that my scorebook was official. Not so! The home team was keeping the official score, so when I pointed out a mistake in the lineup that was given to me, it didn't matter. Why was I asked to keep score anyway? I would have never questioned anything if I would have been told that someone else had the official scorebook! It would have not been my place! My apologies to T-Rex & his team & fans! My thanks to my husband, teammates & friends that were there to back me up! The fields were poorly prepared. One field didn't even have double 1st bases. Some of the umps were great & some were terrible (as in every tournament). Even though we received a 3rd place (also last place) plaque, the presentation was non existant. It is only one person's opinion, that no one cared a hoot about the way this tournament was run. |
June 9 SSUSA Staff 3505 posts | Wasn't this an I.S.S.A. tournament? ... It wasn't sanctioned or administered by SSUSA, so maybe a word to R.B. Thomas would be more appropriate? |
June 9 ICELADY Men's 60 23 posts | This was only posted to make members beware of this tournament. No one would have to be told that it was not a SSUSA tournament. SSUSA has always run the best tournaments in senior softball & always will, because Fran & her staff care! I don't know any way to get in touch with Thomas. Maybe he will read this on your site. |

June 9 ICELADY Men's 60 23 posts | Thank you! As usual the SSUSA staff has come through again! |
June 9 Ho 301 posts | Is this the same ICE LADY who helped with running the SSUSA LOUISVILLE BLUEGRASS and SSUSA JIMMY CLARK Tournament? Ho |

June 10 Gary33 149 posts | Have any of you had a game declared a tie score? It was tied in pool play 21 to 21 timed had expired the umpire told us the game was over because time was EXPIRED. The Smokey Mountain wasn't so great. Didn't hurt our seeding because there were only 2 teams in our division 55 Major but it did hurt Reality Check for seeding. What is ironic was that umpire had our Championship game. If it had been me he wouldn't have umpired again in that tournament! What puzzles me is every team in the 55 AAA are rated Major in either SSUSA or SPA. Yes Ho That's the correct ICELADY! |
June 10 Ho 301 posts | The ISSA ratings shouldn't surprise you, they are that away across the boards in all ages and divisions. They are lowered to make teams think they are getting a break to play down in a lower division. They don't realize most of the other teams in their new divsion were also rated down to try and intice them to come to the ISSA tournaments. There are a few occasions where SSUSA and SPA do not agree on a team's ratings (usually because of different showings in a SSUSA tournament compared to a SPA tournament or vice versa), but for the most part they do agree. The reason they match is, regardless of what you think of the rating system, both SSUSA and SPA DO TAKE INTO consideration lots of different factors, input and results to make a decision. It is not just a "if I rate them lower maybe they will come to my tournament" reason for a rating. If you want to go to those tournaments, you will pay the price. Me I'll stick with SSUSA and SPA, where I know some thought actually went into the rating. Ho |
June 11 kbl Men's 60 544 posts | HO....issa doesnt always do that....a certain team won a 4 team 60AA bracket in ISSA TOC and got re-rated to AAA....?? thanks, ken |
June 11 GaCMan 86 posts | Not all 55 teams were Major we were the only one that was AAA COLUMBUS 55s. |
June 11 birdie Men's 70 802 posts | For what it is worth, The ISSA did away with the Major Plus division and now only has a Major division. I have seen a lot of discussions on that move. The difference in ratings between the organizations comes from a trickle down effect. Major teams that can not compete in the new Major division are moved to AAA etc. I think that it is working because the next ISSA tourney has five 60 AA, ten 60 AAA teams and six Major teams in the 60 age group. So it seems that somebody likes the ISSA rating seems. I am looking forward to playing against a ten team field in two weeks. Thanks Harry #20 NVFORCE |
June 11 Rusty47 16 posts | I played this past weekend in the Smoky (not Smokey) Mountain Senior Tournament. Would agree there were problems in how the tournament was run. However, I had a good time and met some great guys. I believe there were over 30 teams, and some great softball played. |
June 11 kbl Men's 60 544 posts | birdie...i am now playing 65AAA...hope to see you in salem..it is always good to talk with you. thanks, ken-Spicers 65AAA |
June 11 birdie Men's 70 802 posts | kbl, I tried to find a 65 team but could not hook up with anybody. I was hurt till beginning of May and still not 100%. See you in Salem. Thanks Harry |
June 11 Ho 301 posts | Birdie, I would expect a lot of teams would like ISSA ratings. Did you notice that of the TEN AAA teams in the 60's tournament you were talking about FIVE are rated MAJOR by the other organizations and of the FIVE AA's, THREE are rated AAA by the other organizations. That is a no-brainer as to what tournament I would play in if I was one of the MAJOR teams which are rated AAA or one of the AAA teams which are rated AA. Teams go where they get the best chance to win. Ho |
June 11 cw Men's 65 79 posts | Speaking as someone who has managed a team the good thing about ISSA tournaments is there is a lot less BS that teams have to deal with than in SSUSA amd SPA. The brackets (at least when I have played in 50's and 55's for the last 7 years) seem to regulate themselves. Do you get an occasional "loaded" team that shouldn't be playing against the rest; yes, but I find that to be the exception rather than the rule. The thing that I find better is that ISSA/ISF has better "destinations" and better venues (i.e., fields) than SSUSA and SPA, in general. Most of the complexes that I have played on are excellent and SSUUSA and SPA should take note. Kudos to RB and Greg and company for making that a priority. If you care about "awards" they are better too, but I could give a hoot. My 2 cents... |
June 11 Ho 301 posts | That is why we have three organizations each one has it's positives and each one has it negatives. You get to pick and choose which ones you want. Makes it better for the players and teams when they have choices and can decide which best fits their needs. Ho |
June 12 JohnBob Men's 65 256 posts | The main reason our team likes ISSA is the Home Run rule, in Major its 6 - 1 up and if one is hit over the limit its a out. We won 60 Major world in SSUSA 2 years ago when it was 5 hr's and out's. Since both SPA & SSUSA have went to walks over the limit our local league team has had a hard time competing. |
June 12 cw Men's 65 79 posts | Well said Ho. |
June 12 titanhd Men's 60 640 posts | HO; The format used in Akron this weekend does not lend itself to my ever playing there again. When a team has no chance of winning on Sunday and teams voluntarily leaving the tourney with games left on the table should open ones eyes that that format needs some restructuring. |
June 12 kbl Men's 60 544 posts | titanHD...what format was used? thanks, ken |
June 12 kbl Men's 60 544 posts | birdie..in Salem, if it works out for you, check the 65AAA schedule Friday. maybe you like what you see. thanks, ken |
June 12 birdie Men's 70 802 posts | Ho, I realize that there is different ratings in all three organizations. We are AAA in two and Major in one. If we would have stayed in ISSA Major with the elimination of Major plus, we had a slim chance of winning. So we were re rated AAA and are in the middle of the pack even as an AAA team. We will play where we have the best chance of competing and not being a doormat. I just thought that bashing the ISSA was unfair. Everybody has their flaws ISSA, SPA and SSUSA. so it is nice that we get to pick and choose our tourneys. Three of the five 60 teams that are rated Major did play in the SSUSA ACC tourney. We can all pick and choose which is a good thing. Play well and stay healthy. Thanks Harry |
June 12 kbl Men's 60 544 posts | Ho and birdie...i agree with birdie. also, check ISSA for Salem...they must be doing something right as there are 81 teams registered. thanks, ken |
June 12 Ho 301 posts | While you're at it check THEE BUCKEYE CLASSIC 82 teams All AA and AAA. When you take the masters and majors from SALEM they have 61 teams and that includes the majors which are playing down as AAA and AAA's playing down as AA. Ho |
June 12 Ho 301 posts | Well I understand Lonnie..that round robin format isn't for everyone, but 82 teams did like it. Also drew 77 last year and 75 the year before. That is the problem with a round robin when after you are o-4, there is no reason to stay and play your last two game. It is almost like losing your first two games on Sunday in a double-elimination tournament after losing your two pool games on Saturday and have to go home 0-4. We'll miss you next year. Ho |
