While playing in Ft. Myers recently we used a courtesy runner for my teammate who hits in front of me. We were in extra innings and he represented the tying run. After he scored I called for a runner and he offered to run for me. When he took my place on the base he was called out and this ended the inning. I believe they misinterpreted the rule.

I thought the rule was that you can't have a coutesy runner take the place on base of another coutesy runner.

It became a moot point since we won in the next inning but it could have knocked us out of the tournament.

Was the rule properly applied in our case?

I should clarify that the player who ran for me was my teammate that hits before me not the player who ran for him.

Hello Bob ... I was the T.D. at the Ft. Myers tournament and was consulted on the 'situation' you mention ... You are completely correct that a courtesy runner may not be used to replace a courtesy runner (absent an injury circumstance) still on base per Rule 13.4(3) ... However, there is a related prohibition at Rule 13.4(2) which states "A runner who is replaced with a courtesy runner may not be used as a courtesy runner for the remainder of the inning." ... The umpire rulled correctly in this instance, but the only bad thing for you was that it took you another inning to prevail ... DAVE

Dave,

Thanks for responding quickly to my question. I pride myself on knowing the rules. This must be a new one. Since you have cited the section its obviously the rule. Is there anywhere on this site that the SSUSA rules can be found?
