I agree about avoiding any ASA tournaments. I base this, not only on the way the ASA is handling their bat policy but also on the way they treat seniors in general.

I have played all over the country (as I'm sure most of the people on this board have) and I find that seniors are really treated as second class citizens by the ASA.

I'm not blaming the ASA for focusing on where they make their most money but I don't want to support them either. I have found the SS-USA, LVSSA and the SPA to be much more sensitive to seniors and I therefore try to support these organizations.

That's my opinion.

One thing, at least where or when I have been dealing with them, ASA, as a TD for them or at one of their SENIOR tourneys, the Commissioner, Dick Grove, gives out very good awards over all, and tournament cost are reasonable, to date.
So with that, I think you need to consider
WHO... is astually having a say in all aspects of the tourney, cost of fee entry, rules to go by etc,
WHAT ...are the costs to go and awards to be given
& WHERE...the tournament is being held, which could very well mean the difference between an apple or a orange on both of the above aspects.
This all could apply for leagues as well.

i know in the nationals at burlington n.c. last year they gave some nice awards. do the softball players really want the awards?
it cost roughly $7000 to fly to a national and i do not think we do it for the awards. we like to play the best teams out there so we can sy that we beat the best a in that organization.
it would be nice to playin the nationals and actually get to play 8-10 teams in the major plus division ,but we can only hope.

just my opinion,

From what I get from post all over is that it's really not about them but rather the recognition or status it brings with it.
I would think though it would make winning something decent better for what they forked out.
Guess not.
Maybe charging an arm and a leg and getting a hat, for example, for a job well done, is good.
It has been written, prices will be on the rise, and along with that, more and or less of other tournament needs will increase and decrease.
One thing is for sure; they are costly to put on, attend, and
we will still go somewhere to play.

ASA is a non issue in the Northwest. I know it's still big in the south, but it is dead here.

From what I gather from this thread and many others on this board the big objection to ASA is you can't use you the Ultra II's. Big deal. As long as everyone is using the same bat rules in the tournament what is the difference

The excuse that we have so much money invested in bats then they ban them is way out of date. The last 2 or 3 yrs we all knew what bats were legal and which were not when we bought them.

My first 4 tournaments I could use my MUT120 and now the next 5 are under ASA bat rules so I have to use my MUT98. Do I stay at home because I can't use my 120????

I do umpire ASA games, but my biggest objection is the list of bats that are banned with a lot of them not even making sense. I do not know how many times I have had to look down to a model number because bats A and B are almost identical except for one is legal, and one is not. Next year some bats will no longer be "grandfathered" as allowed, and you will not be able use them anymore like the Freak. What I really do not understand is why they worry so much about bats and safety when they allow metal cleats. The couple of senior nationals that I have been to were good tournaments, but seniors are definitely not their bread and butter.

The senior tournaments I have put on until this year, were backed by ASA and players were allowed to use the U-2. But this year they would not send me the forms to get the insurance through them. I haad to cancell the two scheduled. My calls and emails were ignored.
I opened the door for them and through that they were able to get into one assn and another questionable group or what ever on the coast, but it's not like it could be.
I said 'questionable' because there were player(s) younger than the age group playing on at least one team, in at least one tournament mentioned awhile back on this board. Some players that played in them let me know.
But don't ignore them, they have too much clout as seen with bats and balls. Trouble is I'd bet those making the larger decisions don't even play the game any more. If they ever did.

Nancy Allen if you check the Senior Section of the ASA rules on cleats you will see metal cleats aren;t allowed in the Senior divisions.

Fred, sorry I was referring more to ASA in general. You are right that metal cleats are not allowed in ASA senior or coed and fortunately in no other association. Gary, I have seen people cleated and feet stepped on by metal cleats, and this is why I think that they are unsafe. You are more than entitled to your beliefs however. I just don't get the concern on safety on one piece of equipment and not another.

I rarely see metal cleats anywhere other than in fastpitch games.
One other safety issue you could add would be batters box holes and uneven ground anywhere on a field.
And there is very few places or parks whereyou won't find something.
But those aren't an assn's problem per se, just a liability for the field owners, unless they start getting complaints, nothing will be done about any of it.

Ah we are back to normal. I have to disagree with Gary19 on the danger of metal cleats. We had a 2nd basemen taken out by a slide last year and was very lucky that it only seperated his ankle and didn't break or tear anything. I would hate to see he ankle if the runner had metal spikes on.

It is just common sense that metal cleats are more dangerous.

QUESTION: Can anyone tell me the legal bats that may be used for ASA? Please add the company's name. MANY THANKS! I am not one of those guys who walk around with a $1,000 worth of bats. You may call me cheap, but I don't care. I have three bats. I can only hit with one (hahahahahahahaha)

Cognac Lite I use a simple rulr of thumb when it comes to ASA if it doesn't have the ASA 2004 approval stamp I don't use it. Here is a link to the ASA website and their approved equipment it is pretty easy to navigate.

ASA bats, approved and non approved, can all be found on their web site.
Pictures are there as well, and other info you may find interesting, or not.
