June 28 curty Men's 60 187 posts | looking for rule info on a thrown bat incident. I ejected a player when he threw his bat over an 8'high fence into the dug out area. Discussion ensued as to what rule was being enforced. My position is unsportsman conduct (dangerous) and I considered the incident as possibly causeing injury- to players (on his own team) or spectators sitting nearby. While it was not done in anger the result could have been the same! Would like to be able to solidify my position, but can't seem to find it in the book. |

June 28 SSUSA Staff 3505 posts | curty ... You won't find it specifically in the book, however you DID properly invoke the "Unsportsmanlike Conduct" clause vested with the umpire ... Throwing a bat in anger or personal disgust or frustration is, at best, dangerous to those in the vicinity ... The fact that it cleared an 8' fence proves that! ... You made the correct judgment call and, accordingly, the call is not subject to protest or appeal ... |

July 2 Pgh Yinzer Men's 60 27 posts | Just had this happen in FHC Tourn.. Ejected player and later in game to ask player to leave park for running his mouth outside dugout.. Next day coach of team ask director to take me off his game and they did so without taking other ump off field who was working with me on game in question.. The director attacked my integrity of the game (that I very much love) because we enforced a situation where one of throwers own players almost got hit with the bat. I do not and will not ever umpire senior softball games after they made it look like the bad guy.. Oh yeah the bat did fly further than the infield fly with bases loaded.. |
