No biggie B.J. Yeah I guess the thread I started did get hijacked, when one considers that my original question was about base stealing and passed balls, and not about foul balls at all. LOL. :-)

found the below post on another softball rules web-site...lol SURPRISE.. they all told wayne that the rule was correct

I waited several days to see if he would come back to admit that he was wrong.. or maybe he is still looking for someone to agree with him

I've been trying to explain to a person who claims he has 20 years experience umpiring. He claims that a runner can legally tag when a fly ball is touched over foul ground and that it only becomes foul when it hits the ground.

I was taught years ago that this ruling is worded incorrectly for which it was when I first started. A fly foul ball becomes a foul ball when it is first touched over foul territory and runners cannot advance on foul ball. Runners can legally advance when ball is caught. A source I have for clarification is former MLB umpire, Jim Evans.

Here is the rule I'm debating.

.RULE 8.4(8) WHEN RUNNERS CAN ADVANCE AT THEIR RISK
Runners are entitled to advance with liability to be put out-
A) When a pitched ball is batted.
B) On a thrown ball or fair batted ball that is not blocked.
C) On a thrown ball that hits an umpire.
D) When a legally caught ball is first touched.

I have no idea what they're implying with D. Unless something has changed in the last few years, I would like to know..

I have a good friend that is on an officiating site. He said that he is sure that the same guy is on his site too.

Like Mr. Evans didn't have enough problems:

And there she goes folks.

I know all the details of the situation you posted in another veiled effort to debase a certain individual......which is what happens when the poster doesn't have a valid argument.

There are 3 known books to be in libraries in America. One is close to you. You should make the effort to actually read a book from a scholar. If you ever find one to buy, you better latch onto it. Those things are like gold in the world of REAL umpiring...something I'm sure you're never done, yet criticize those who have.
