What's the ruling?
I was in a tournament in Anaheim a few weeks ago and I asked the umpire a hypothetical question similar to the question I am posing here. He didn\\\'t know the answer.

I understand that the problem addressed may have arisen due solely to the \\\'artificial\\\' imposition of a mercy rule.

Here\\\'s my question. Say there is a \\\"12 run after 5 innings\\\" mercy rule in effect. Say after 4 innings the home team is ahead 20-0.

What happens in the 5th inning? Is it an \\\"open\\\" inning for the visitors, or should the game be over? - In which case, is the mercy rule effectively applied after 4 innings?

(I am assuming it is obvious to all that the visitors can\\\'t score more than 5 runs in the top of the 5th unless it is an \\\"open\\\" inning).

I would say the game is over because you can't score more than 5 runs. IMO you can't call it an open last inning because if you score 9 runs you would be within the 12 runs and you would keep playing.

That is why most tournaments have a mercy rule of 20 runs after 4 innings

one i don't care for the mercy rule with limited run innings, have had it bite us in the bottom.we didn't get to bat in the bottom of the fifth b/c of it(lvssa)so need less to say we only batted 4 times.i say if you have the limited runs and your about to be mericied you should be allowed to score as many runs to go one over the mercy if its more than the usual 5 runs, lets say you need 6 to stop the mercy you can score 7,etc.i have played in tourneys in socal that you could score as many as it took to go one up if down by more than the usaul limit per inning(so if down by 8 you could score 9),we called it the catch up rule,it was a local thing for us.

We played in a game like this and were told that we
could score enough runs in the 5th to get out of the
mercy rull.

Mad Dog, you just said what I was going to say. I play doubleheaders and no time limits and no 1-1 counts on Wednesday mornings. We do not have a mercy rule either. We play every inning with a 5 run limit(last inning is open), but if you are behind by more than 5 runs, we play the catch up rule. If you are behind by more than 5 in any inning, then you can score as many runs as it takes to catch up. Our games start at 9AM and end around noon or earlier. Therefore, 90 minute games and could decrease that time with the 1-1 count.

Duke: That is the way we do it also 5 runs per inning and you can score enough to tie.

If you eliminate the warm ups between inning we play our doubleheaders in about 2 1/2 hours.
