Dead ball?
Last night we were playing for what probably is the league championship. This is an open league however there are 5 seniors on our team. SAG is the only one that posts here besides me. In the first inning they have runners on first and second and a ground ball is hit to our ss. He attempts to throw to second but thorws wide, stirking the runner in the head. Immediately the home plate umpire calls "Dead Ball". The ball doesn't roll far, maybe 5 feet. I ask the base umpire why it was called a dead ball and she (probably the worse umpire I have ever seen) said that when it looks like someone is hurt they should call dead ball. I told here in my 34 years of softball that was the first time dead ball was called because someone was injured.
I believe that when the umpire saw that the runner was able to crawl back to second and that there wouldn't be a play on another runner he should have called time out.
Any ASA umpires out there with an opinion?
Btw, the runner didn't leave the game and we lost.

Dead ball?
I'll chime in here, I'm an ASA umpire, and have been in this situation before.

According to ASA rulebook, if the player is injured and in the umpire's opinion requires immediate attention, the umpire should call dead ball, and award any bases that should have been awarded had the umpire not called time out. (Rule 4-Section 10)

This applies to all runners. Now I don't know how hard the ball hit the player's head, or if the player went down and didn't move, but looks like the player crawled to the base like you said.

If I had been umpiring, I would have called a delayed dead ball, thus, giving the player time to reach the bag safely.

She was right to do so. Kill the play (ESPECIALLY on a batted ball). Check the injury, and decide what to do with the Batters/Runners after that.
