Dabigdawg3: Thanks for the question! What I observed was the full gamut of bats from wood to aluminum to U-trip favorite composites and also some senior bats were being used. Our guys found that the harder the bat was to compress the better the big-ball rebounded off of it. The U2 and Senior Combats did no better that the wood bat or say the old C405 aluminum alloy. The old Green label Synergy + and Synergy 2 Red label were also favorites because they are harder bats than the U2.

Bash,

Yeah, I think the harder and heavier bats would work better. When I first started playing 16” back in the late 60’s in Chicago we played with “Open Bats”. Anything you could drag up to the plate could be used. Some guys would drill out the end of a hardball bat and fill it with lead. I knew a guy that had a 37” fungo with lead in the end and it would make the ball knuckle like crazy and go forever, lol. In the Seventies, a lot of leagues would only allow ASA bats (34” – 38oz max.). If you pick one of those up now, it feels like a sledgehammer. Nobody used gloves back then either. The only time we would use them was at the National Tournament.
