I need some help. We are thinking of going to a draft next season inorder to get parity in the league. Have any of you done this and ,if so, what was your experience and how did you do it?

Relic66-We use a player draft in our Houston senior league. We have a four division league of approximately 250 players. Our division contains six 12 player teams . Each year, we rate players at the end of the year in our division on a scale of 1 thru 72. We then have a draft each spring where the team managers draw for draft position, then draft the first 72 players in the pool. It works well for our division since we draft first (being the highest rated level of play).

We also have try-outs prior to the draft and new players display their skills for all the managers in the different divisions to "size them up". These new players get woven into the draft process as well.

This practice has worked well for us the five years I've been playing in Houston. Parity is usually pretty good. As a matter of fact, at the end of this season, only six games separated first place from last place in our division!

Good Luck

Thanks for your response. How did you sort people by position or was that not considered? Do players specify the position the want to play? Example: making a pitcher available to each team.

We use the draft system here in the Cherokee County Senior Softball Assoc (http://www.cssasoftball.com/). We have tryouts and at that time positions are discussed. Its up to each manager to make sure he has all positions covered. You may want to email any of our officers with questions.
The part that I don't like about the draft is you usually don't play with your buds!

Relic66-Players fill in a registration form to play. On the form is a field for position(s) desired. I know some people who can pitch who do NOT want to pitch in the League. They note that on the form.

BruceinGa-I share your pain. When I moved to Houston 5 years ago, the thing I missed most was playing with my friends. Actually, our Northern Virginia league team was pretty much our tournament team except for a few guys from Richmond.

I've actually grown to like the draft system here. No one team dominates the league, like we did in Virginia, and you get to play with pretty much everyone in the League over the years. Makes for some real good repartee among the players on League nights!
