Hi All:

This is an off topic but if anybody has suggestions please let me know.

I need some help here and hope someone can give some tips. We have 4 cars, 05 Nissan Murano (mine) 2000 Honda Civic, 1999 Nissan Maxima and a 1992 Lexus SC300. I have me 56 yrs old, my wife 54, my daughter 23 and son 20 on the policy. We have zero wrecks or tickets on any of our records and have been insured. I have been insured through AARP for the last few years but was just quoted $5,700+ per year for the 4 cars. All the cars are fully insured and are nice vehicles. Does anybody have any suggestions on where I may go to get a better bang for my buck on insurance?
Thanks very much for your help.

James

James, If you are a veteran or if a member of your family is you may want to check USAA. It has great prices for ex-military people.

Check around obviously but there are some that will insure for specific mileage. and don't put the 20 year old on the newest one. One thing the cars you have will cost more than say the same year american made.
excuse used is that their import which is odd since many parts are made here any way.
I think it's just an excuse to up the cost. My wife drives a 02 Hyundai and it cost almost as much as my 05 Chev pu. I priced a 2010 Prius and it was 2+ bills more than my pu. I had thought about trading it.
They know which are the more expensive one and which are not and which driver should be on which auto as the primary driver to lower the cost. That does not mean the others may not drive them either.
Shop.

The higher your deductibles are, the lower premiums usually are as well. If you have one that is basically a clunker, you might want to carry just PLPD for coverage of & for others hurt and not your car. not sure about your occupants.

James, I pay $1400 for full coverage on a 2009 Audi A4 Cab, 1999 Audi A6, and liability only on a 1989 GMC PU, through Cincinnati Ins. Deductibles are 500/100. I agree with what Taits says, make sure the older vehicles are driven by the kids (liability). Shop around. Try Progressive's website. BTW, I'm 55 and my wife's 41 and investing in a radar detector was the best money I ever spent for my wife. Saves on tickets and insurance premiums. Good luck.

James,

better check around.. 1st off you shouldn't be carrying full coverage on vehicles that old if you don't owe on them.. we live in Vegas where ins. is double what Pa. was and only pay 1600 a year for full coverage on 06 Chev. HHR and a 2010 Chev. Camaro.. Ins. thru GMAC. We was with UNitrin and it went down. Oh by the way I'm 57 & wife is 42,, no kids on policy but still that's a big difference.. I know living in Vegas ins. is one of the highest in the country.. Good luck looking, but keep checking you will find something alot cheaper..

James, I'm a retired Allstate agent and the rate will go down a lot when you son turns 21. (I'm sure you already know this) I don't know how many miles or the value of the 2000 honda and if its paid for, its almost 10 years old and rating son on it and dropping Collision will save a bunch. also do you have your home insured with same Company? The discount you get for having both Auto and Home with same company is as much as 20%. Good luck

Hey James.....by AARP I'm assuming that is "The Hartford".....
I have a '86 Vett that was bone stock, all original, 45,000 miles, showroom condition. A guy ran a red light, in a rental car not rented by him, and was cited at the scene. Hit me on the very front tip of the front left bumper by the side indicator light. Did about $4000 worth of damage. I paid for the "waiver of deductible" on my policy (usually always do). This occurred in April of 2004 and is still not settled. They owe me the deductible and car rental $ and have not settled this in over 5 years? Every time I call its the same crap, "the claim is still in subrogation"....I would not recommend any kind of insurance threw AARP as I believe they are getting more and more in bed with the ins. companies.

James,
What state do you live in. I am an agent with Farmers Insurance, but i live and have my agency in California only.

Thanks for all the great information folks.
I did not know my sons insurance would go down at 21.
All of my cars are in prime condition so I hate to just put liability on them. I need to make a decision by tomorrow but thanks everybody.

I knew the home ins inclusion was another factor, but figured any agent would bring that one up.
As for another thought, have the 21 yr old pay the premiums, if they want to drive what ever one you allow. That's what I did from day one and it worked well. No job, going to school?, find a job & earn it. You usually respect something you earn rather than are given, more. Usually.

I ran the Blue Book on 2000 Accord with 90,000 miles and its a little over $5000 and Collision with $500 Deductible may be costing you $700 or $800 a year with 20 year old male rated on it. By all means kept Comprehensive which covers glass breakage, theft, flood, storm damage, fire etc. The Collision only pays if he has at/fault accident,is hit by uninsured driver or hit and run driver. Like taits said a good Agent should point this out to you.

If in a wreck, it could cost almost that much to repair it. Chances are it would be totaled out. But depending on the damaged area buy it back as a salvage and drive it. I did that once and all it was was a broken drive shaft and tranny repair. Drove it for another 3 years. My cost was less than 500. Then just carried PLPD.
