| Sept. 28 MTM Men's 70 25 posts | Time to re-visit adding the 11th defensive player. I played in and watched many games during the North East Championships this past weekend in Cape May. I saw an awful lot of balls hit up the middle in spite of the PPR and warnings at the pre tournament meetings about hitting up the middle. I know of at least two pitchers being hit with one having to go to the hospital for x-rays. (Thankfully just a badly bruised forearm) I need someone to tell me the reasons why there should not be an additional defensive player. I heard that one prevailing reason is players want to play the game like they used to or something to that effect. Let’s see. Play the game like we used to!!!!!!! 1. Five runs per inning. 2. Extra first base. 3. Extra home plate. 4. Commitment line. 5. No sliding at home plate. 6. No sliding at first base. 7. Then we have the PPR that most people seem to hate and it seems hard for umps to interpret. It is time for all the Senior Softball Organizations to just add the 11th defensive player in the best interest of senior softball. |
| Sept. 28 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | You left some out: 8.balls hit over the fence are an out 9.In associations that allow hrs, you can't hit another until the oppositon hits one. 10.substitute runners I disagree. Many of us don't agree with 1-10. I don't want to add anymore. Why not make it 12 defensive player? Wouldn't that make it even tougher for someone to get a hit up the middle??! Stop the madness! There, I'm done! ;) |
| Sept. 28 Paco13 424 posts | MTM, I play with the young guys and most of the time we use the 5 men infield, why seniors do not use it more often is beyond me. However, that extra infield does not prevent from the ball being hit through the middle. Your idea does not make any sense. After so many crazy ideas, why not just stop playing period...1-10 are bad enough...why add 11-20. |
| Sept. 28 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | On #3 they also use a line at times instead of the extra plate. On the 11th player, Extra players are normally for the older div's but I have seen them used as an either or choice, instead of the 5 runs. I'd be against the 11 player as a permanent player, but as the either or, I have no problem. Few take and use it. But that could be because it is seemingly restricted as to where the person has to or can play. ... It should be the teams choice, not the assn. where to place him. |
| Sept. 28 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | paco,i think its b/c us seniors can't cover as much ground as the youngens can in the OF.on a occ the team i played on when i was 50 would do it,but only when the middle was being tore up(not the pitcher now)with base hits. |
