Sept. 29 JamesLG 421 posts | Hi All: We have played nearly a full season with the new rules and in some cases new less performing ball and my question to all is "was the game we played this year more enjoyable than in the past"? After all is that not what we play the game for? I have my thoughts and most who have ever read my posts know I don't like the HR rule. I started playing senior ball 6 years ago and this year I have seen more pitchers get hit than in the previous 5 years combined. I do believe we need to get a softer ball that will perform. If Trump can come up with one I am all for it. We use a Trump ball in our senior league and it is great. We used an absolute crap ball in a NSA senior tourney that pretty much took the fun out of it. Even the line drive gap hitters were not happy. The ball just floated and died. How did 2009 measure up? Thank You: James |
Sept. 29 thebull Men's 50 59 posts | This year was not nearly as fun as previous years. Just look at attendance, way down, this year in Tucson there were only 26 Teams. And after SSUSA's little experiment with crap balls next year they wont have any teams. Unless changes are made , or should I say undone, the players and teams I've talked to will look for other places to play. It's such a shame to see SSUSA cut it's own throat, maybe it's best they die quickly so someone else can step in. |
Sept. 30 Omar Khayyam 1357 posts | JamesLG, that's a good question to help a guy reflect. I play on an older major team, so home run rule changes made NO difference for us with the increasingly common 300 foot fences. I play in an association that ignored the PPR, so we didn't have to deal with all the arguing over rules interpretation. I had a great, fun year. Yeah, sometimes the balls lost pop in the afternoon, but since it was equal for both teams, my team just took it with a shrug. I'd like an overview of nationwide tournament attendance, and an attempt to factor in the weak economy, before I'd make a decision on rules changes causing decline. One could argue from Rock N Roll Reno that SSUSA has never been more popular—biggest field yet and plans to expand to another weekend in 2010 to handle the crowd of teams. |
Sept. 30 #6 Men's 60 1173 posts | I will wait until after PHOENIX and VEGAS to say how 2009 compared to 2008.I will say this......I went and watch the young guns play in an "E" tournament, it was ASA.I had several senior players with me watching.......we all agree that we can play at that level with the kids.....there is a NO HOME RUN RULE in E, but most of us that watched hit base hit, line drives.......After watching this game, talking to LARGE majority of the senior players who are fed up with all the ---- in Senior ball.....we are thinking about getting a really good "E" team and playing ASA next year or at least give it a try..It's not for all as I know there are several people on this board that like the home runs......but dealing with the rating system with SSUSA AND SPA, we may give it a try...will let you know after the World and the Winter Worlds....your thoughts....by the way, there are a lot of the "E" tournaments in our area(TEXAS) AND WE COULD PLAY EVERY WEEKEND IF WE CHOOSE, WE'LL SEE IN A COUPLE OF MONTHS.....any thoughts....Taits...are you there ? |
Sept. 30 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Terrific oomments to date. I wanna wait till LVSSA and Phoenix are in the can. Balls are HR as outs have made tournaments less enjoyable and more dangerous to pitchers. More later. |
Sept. 30 WOW 197 posts | The main problem I had was with the PPR not being understood and used properly. Too many umpires had different interpretations of this dumb rule and it made a big difference in several of our games and I'm tired of the same old excuses the tourn. directors use. Get these umpires trained or get rid of this rule! |
Oct. 1 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | well i've had a nice yr so far,my team went to 9 tourneys,i was able to make 5 of them b/c of the economy(well maybe its b/c my retirement chk doesn't go as far as it should).i did 4 SPA'S and 1 SSUSA.didn't care for the ssusa ppr rule,in my games it seemed to be applied ok.in spa everything seem to run ok.both assoc's use a decent ball(wilted a bit in the afternoon heat in ssusa)spa give the team's 6 to begin with,so it was up to us to keep them out of the heat. the biggest prol was usaully having to play out of div(both age and class) b/c of us being the only one in ours in this area, but that not unusaul here in texas. didn't make any nationals or worlds this yr for the first time since starting to play senior ball(59 now, soon to be 60),only one i'm playing will be huntsman games. |
