Sept. 2 Player25 Men's 55 50 posts | Most new bats have a plastic wrapper on the barrel of the bat. If a bat was used in a senior softball tourney with the wrapper still on the bat, would the bat be considered illegal, altered, etc? What would be the effect of leaving the plastic on the bat? Thanks for any input. |

Sept. 2 Lecak Men's 60 1026 posts | #6 you would be suprised how long the plastic lasts. I used to take BP with a guy here in Vegas big time player and he would leave the wrapping on during the break in period. I've seen 100 or more swings and the plastic last. He swore by the fact that the plastic would help with flex break in period. Also when you take the wrapping off the bat still looks fresh no scratching which I believe would extend the life of the bat. |

Sept. 2 SSUSA Staff 3505 posts | This factual situation actually occurred in an SSUSA event this past summer. The Tournament Director's decision, with which we concur, was to NOT allow the bat to be used until the wrapping was removed. The rationale, reached without regard to the question of whether or not this constitutes an 'altered bat' was: Bats approved for use in SSUSA events are tested for compliance with the 1.21 BPF Standard. This testing is done under laboratory conditions designed to be as close as possible to the conditions of usage in a sanctioned event. The testing is done on bats after the wrappers have been removed. Accordingly, the usage of approved bats must be under similar un-wrapped conditions. The wrapper may or may not enhance performance (the criteria for an 'altered' bat), but usage will be limited to un-wrapped bats to ensure testing integrity is maintained. |
Sept. 3 Player25 Men's 55 50 posts | To SSUSA staff, If a batter did use a bat with the wrapper still on, what should the call be? If the call is "out", what would be the basis of the call. Understood the explanation but if the call is out, I would suppose it had to do with the rules of "altered or illegal". If so, would the suspension for "altered or illegal" be imposed? |
Sept. 4 Webbie25 Men's 70 2414 posts | Interesting-I got a bat from the Miken truck in Reno and he made mention of leaving the wrapper on. I didn't see a reason to, so I took it off, but was wondering why you would do that. |
Sept. 4 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | I seriously doubt the plastic would serve to improve the flex of a bat. Get real. About the only thing I could see that being done for is a guy leaving it on and them if no tears were in wrapper, try to sell or trade it as a new unused bat.,.. Testing it without obvious signs of usage, ie wrapper gone. |
Sept. 6 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | I and two or three others around here leave the plastic wrapper on our new bats while we use them in bp. My reasoning is that it keeps them "nicer" longer. I've had someone remark that my Freak Plus was brand new when in fact it had about 400 swings on it, all in bp. When it did get a tear in the plastic I'd repair it with clear 2" box tape. We did have one guy that didn't take the wrapper off before using it in a game. At his next at bat the wrapper was off. |
