Nov. 19 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | here is an article on BBS http://www.softballfans.com/forums/showthread.php?p=12284714&posted=1#post12284714 now tell me how safe it is with our equipment. |
Nov. 19 Airbosn Men's 70 329 posts | MD-60, That info has been around for a while and both researchers are very knowledgable in their profession and softball. However, as a member of a tournament committee that sponsors Nationals for other associations I can say for sure that teams and players want senior bats and hot balls. I personally agree with you about defense, but senior softball is a business. The change will occur when all the senior associations agree to go to a lesser ball at the same time or a lawyer review the BBS information and tries to make a case that the association knew of the danger and failed to correct. |

Nov. 19 gary c 418 posts | Do you think people play because of the bats and balls and not the love of the game? Good business is doing what is right so the people that play the game are safe. If things stay the same all it will do is help the lawyers make even more money off the backs of senior softball. |
Nov. 19 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | We play for the love of the game and the game needs lively bats and balls. That's what world record teams this year in SSUSA have shown along with SPA, NCSSA and LVSSA just to name a few. There's no reason to dumb down and kill the entire game if some adjustments need to be made in the areas of liability and safety. The more light that's shed on this subject, the clearer it will become that any adjustments that need to be made can be made without truly dampening the experience of the game we love to play. Same old story. Same old song. |
Nov. 19 gary c 418 posts | This is softball not sex. |
Nov. 19 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | And on the subject of business and corporate themes and ethics are we supposed to believe that the present day model is concerned about anything but profits and as such do they deserve to be enfranchised and obeyed like we're all children incapable of identifying and defining ourselves, concerns and interests independently? Enron was a self interested corporation, so was General Motors and Bear Stearns. They had lawyers, too, were bullies and wrong and talked about 'the sky falling' often if they weren't catered to and look where they went and would have us go. I've said before and it's no less true that there's a self righteous movement in our society across the board that includes senior softball that is taking what's already successful and redefining it as unsafe and lacking. Let's make boxing, football, baseball and anything they can suck some money out of and make us feel a little better about ourselves at the same time given all the crap the world is going through. Makes sense but doesn't pass the smell test. |
Nov. 19 gary c 418 posts | Come on man this crap should be on MSNBC with the rest of the left wing wack jobs. Not on a softball site. PLEASE STAY ON SUBJECT! |
Nov. 19 Airbosn Men's 70 329 posts | Gary...I would play with socks and broom handles (look up the name, its in the blood, lol.). Based on just organizing national and local tournaments the players WANT the senior bats and at present time the Fire ball. My own wish is for a more in the park game. However, the survey done a few years ago by SPA provide enough data for the associations to continue the bat and ball combo that most seniors desire. |
Nov. 19 gary c 418 posts | Like I said wish I was a lawyer. If all you want to do is hit homers than that's the game for you. There is alot of guys like myself that are starting to come over from the MSBL that want to play a more rounded game and in a short time if not already the results will be different. I do thank you for all your hard work. |
Nov. 19 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Hey Len. Graciously and learnedly said. Lively bats and balls rule and does reflect the majority opinion about what seniors want and expect. |
Nov. 19 gary c 418 posts | Hey Len, Old ways die hard but real ball players know whats right. |
Nov. 19 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Hey Len. I've talked with some elite players and some wanna be elite players who espouse they resent not looking as good compared with the others when the play with lively bats and balls. They don't stand out or think they stand out as much. I say "too f-ing bad." More guys doing better makes the whole game and experience better. That's why lively bats and balls work because MORE players, the great majority of players enjoy themselves perform better and have real fun. The thing is that if these guys are truly elite they'll still be better when playing with lively equipment but some can't take the lack of distance between them and pack. It scares 'em and makes 'em feel more insecure which I find both interesting and more prevalent than one might think from a distance. A lot of times, guys who perform at a high level are more insecure and scared of failure than regular guys and turn that fear adrenaline into energy to perform better. More fear means more adrenaline which means more energy/force for performance. It's why some of them can be huge a-holes and imbalanced and not the well grounded guys we need and like our heroes to be. You hear stuff like, "he's a terrific player but a real ass-hole" and at a distance it doesn't make sense but when you really listen and watch you can hear and see the little person inside of 'em that's scared to death and then it makes total sense. |
Nov. 19 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | If you listen to anyone long enough you'll hear and get what's going on inside of 'em and the size of the person he/she is inside. It's something none of us can avoid or escape and the more experience we have with people the more we get to know who they really are. We can run but we can't hide. |
Nov. 19 ShaneV Men's 55 393 posts | The way I see it, the senior game is perfect today. With lesser balls or bats, which is what I experienced from 1977 to 2005, even with perfect technique I could never reach a 300' fence. Often the fences were 275' or 285' but I could not reach them either. As a result I've always been a right side hitter with an occasional down-the-line in the park-er. Only the speed kind, never the power kind. Today, only with the right swing and contact, I enjoy a fence-clearing home run now and then. I had my first ever walk-off this year. Though I respect the opinions of those who would deny me this experience, I'm grateful to those responsible for making the bats, balls, and the rules, that make this possible. One more point. What usually decides the close games? Number of home runs? Distance of home runs? I think it's least number of mistakes pitching, hitting with bats and making outs on defense. Essentially the same game I've been playing since I was 10. Equipment has improved, like everything else in our lives. Let's play! |
Nov. 19 ShaneV Men's 55 393 posts | Joe made a great point about the elite player issue. I might not be so bold to call it out but I will weigh in. I've seen exactly what he describes throughout my career. Often in the most talented player who seems to BE the most troubled, and who often CAUSES the most trouble. I've been fortunate to do more with less, and to play with many who do the same. I've said it many times, I don't get to play without a team, AND an opponent. |
Nov. 19 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Brilliant, Shane. And the way the most of us think. I knew it all along but then again I'm Einstein, ain't I? The major softball associations didn't get it wrong and are not gonna be changing their standards anytime soon. That's SSUSA, NCSSA, LVSSA, SPA, SSWS and Huntsman ALL used lively bats and balls. More players want to participate because more players hit better therefore play better and enjoy themselves more and this is the recipe for real success for those with the positive sense and self-confidence to accept and admit it. That'd be game, set and match for the good guys. |
Nov. 19 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | to me the player who doesn't want to go the 52-275 ball is afraid that he won't be the BMOC any more.his skills will show how woefully they are with this ball.hitting a ball better doesn't make a better player, just makes him more egoistical and sometimes not even a team player.he looks to hit it out more often when a base hit will do as much for his team than not,as it will keep an inning going instead of hitting that long fly out b/c he wanted to hit it hard, but hey he looked good doing it.oh and when he gets back to the bench its"hey i just missed that". like i have said, the 52-275 ball does play good and keeps the game safer for us old guys who have slowed down with our reflexes, and we all have. |
Nov. 20 gary c 418 posts | mad dog you can't argue with an idiot. NOT YOU SHANE |
Nov. 20 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | I this a guy playing first this week with a worth gold dot (44\375) ball on the knee & knocked him over. Had he not been wearing a good thick pad on both knees I believe I would have broke it. Still could barely walk on it but at least he could. I seriously doubt the 52 ball would make all close hits slight but probably many. I also think that while they may fly, you need to hit them a "specific" way to enable the flight to go just right from what I read in post here about those balls. Wither way, if used in games both teams will be using it, so that part is a lever playing field. |
Nov. 20 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | Should have started out; I hit a guy.... |
Nov. 20 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | i got hit 2 weeks back(a senior tourney,44-375 trump ball)in the calf by the hitter behind me(power hitting lefty)while i was on first.it was 2 outs and i went on his swing and he got me about 4' off the base.my leg from the knee down is black and blue, still swollen, and a knot in the calf still(prolly should of went to the doc's,but...).i can't run(had to come out of the game)still,i feel if it had been the 52-275 ball i would be ok for play almost immediately after being hit. i have seen to many near misses along with guys getting hit in senior ball, and wonder why we need to take these chances of loosing life or limb with dangerous equipment. lets get back to a safer and saner game by using the 52-275 ball. |
Nov. 20 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | oh forgot to add,thank goodness it didn't get bone... |
Nov. 20 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Bobby. Had it been a wet sponge or a pillow you'd have come out even better. That would give a new meaning to Sponge Bob that would be entertaining. If it's too hot for you, bobby, get out of the kitchen but the great majority of us have spoken. Game, set and match. |
Nov. 20 gary c 418 posts | mad dog If bullshit was music frisco would have a band. GAME SET AND MATCH |
Nov. 20 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | No one cares or should about someone who isn't responsible enough to be accountable for his/her negative actions and whatever they have to say. They're like fans at a game who figure because they paid for a ticket they can say say/shout/crap whatever and where ever they want. It might be legal but it's wrong irresponsible and lacks character, integrity and courage. and we all get it. And that would be a majority opinion. |
Nov. 20 birdie Men's 70 802 posts | Shane V, Great points!!!! I completely agree with your post. Thanks Harry |
Nov. 20 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | what is your point joey boy,i was running, not in the field,i had no glove to defend myself.you are just no good of a person and do not care for the welfare of your fellow softball player as seen by your callous posts when someone gets hurt by our hot equipment. and my offer still stands,10 of me against 10 of you,b/c i have that much confidence in my ability to play, where as you don't,and that can be seen by your being afraid to have to play defense with a "bouncy ball".man up joey boy. so game, set, match to whatever game your playing..... |
Nov. 20 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | and to add joey,i'm not scared of anyone on the field, especially you,you don't have the talent to scare anyone, just a 1 trick pony, swing from the heels and see if i can hit it out type...... i get picked up to play with the kids all the time to pitch for them and have no prol with playing with them.. so tell me how hot do you think their kitchens are,no prol for me.... |
Nov. 20 gary c 418 posts | Character, integrity, courage something FRISCO Josephine knows nothing about. What is this elite player crap.If you play in the highest division or in just local leagues you opinion carries no more or less weight than anyone else's. The best player I know never plays in tournaments because he thinks all that travel is a pain in the ass and he has played in the highest level of ball. So just because some YOYO says he knows these elite players and they say this or that BFD who cares. Lets be honest we are a bunch of old guys trying to have fun and enjoy life. Some of you guys sound like a bunch of frustrated jocks who think senior softball is the most important thing in the world. I have met some great guys since I started playing senior ball but just like anything else when people take something that is supposed to be recreational to serious they the ruin it for all. |
Nov. 20 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Hey Harry. Right on. My fan analogy has got real legs regarding the difference between responsible people and those who aren't and just throw stones and move their lips without ever saying anything but who, in fact, they are NOT. Fans are not players. Fans think that buying a ticket means they know the game (the room) and say stuff that sounds like they do but that's not true... they just think they do. They're generally clueless about what's going on and what it takes to be a player and to really play the game, are not really connected with the players and never have/take responsibility for their behavior good, bad or indifferent. But they sure can scream and say lots of stupid, self-indicting, ridiculously ignorant stuff. Can't they. Fans are diminished by comparison with true players not unlike what happens on the website. And there's a number One Fan in every sense of the word on our board. Just like a wanna-be cowboy. All hat and no cattle. Gary C is a fan of our web-site and community, our number One Fan. |
Nov. 20 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Sponge Bob and my Number One Fan. Keep up the good work. |
Nov. 20 gary c 418 posts | Frisco Joe Please stop fantasying about me it makes me uncomfortable and your life partner will be very jealous and will take your big boy bat away and you won't feel like a man anymore I now know why you were a teacher you like to hang around young boys and now older guys. That's another reason you won't get my info you freak. |
Nov. 20 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Your words define YOU, your lack of character and bad intentions. Keep up the good work. |
Nov. 20 gary c 418 posts | joey the sixties are over cut your hair take a bath and grow up. Play the whole game not just half. |
Nov. 20 JamesLG 421 posts | Shane: Great post. The equipment we use now is fun and fast. The league you helped setup in Lacy where we all get to hit the ball hard with no dead ball outs is the way it should be. We usually play one NSA tourney every year and the ball is crap and many of the guys I know would never travel to play a game like that. There is absolutely nothing wrong with guys our size being able to hit the ball out of the park and having a blast doing it. Thanks: James |
Nov. 20 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Hey James. Right on. We won the war though there might be one or two small skirmishes left. Lively bats and balls mean the greatest number of players have the most fun playing softball and everybody wins. Players, fans, TD's and manufacturers. |
Nov. 20 gary c 418 posts | Great post Shane. Just what I thought little guys bring able to act like big guys. There is half a game you guys are missing but it's up yo you. |
Nov. 20 outfielder Men's 65 59 posts | SSUSA when are you going to do something about this trash on this site, there is nothing productive about these people trashing each other and I believe most of us are sick and tired of this childish crap. Please do something before you lose all control |
Nov. 20 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | That's a great point, Doug. SSUSA needs to make a judgment about disparaging conduct/comments I do believe. It has been a point of mine all along that anyone who characteristically and without good faith antagonizes/disparages others be censored and/or suspended. |
Nov. 21 gary c 418 posts | I THINK THAT IS THE POT CALLING KETTLE BLACK. |
Nov. 21 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | If you care to read my posts vis a vis my Number One Fan you'll discover that I learned a lesson about disparaging behavior since the last conflict. Disparaging conduct has no place on this site and as and if I'm guilty of disparaging statements and accusations I should be removed. I accept that. But this last time, especially I have not been if you read what I have said and done. I've been responding carefully around and through someone who has been disparaging with positions and reasons why this person is wrong and should cease disparaging and disrespecting all of us. I agree that SSUSA should do something to enforce it's standards just like you but it must do so effectively using judgment and common sense. I'm not sure they have or want to spend the time to find out who's who or who's not but meaningful regulation is necessary to the positive operation of any social entity in this society at this time. My number One Fan is OBVIOUSLY guilty of numerous counts of irresponsible and bad intentioned behavior since the hiatus and should be judged as such by any and all. He doesn't really care about what he's doing to you or me or any of us and that's obvious, too. It's a just a character he's created with nothing to lose and he can create another just as easily. Real problems never got resolved without real involvement of precious time and energy with important if difficult calls/judgments being made. Sadly but really, this is the case. |
Nov. 21 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Gary, my number One Fan. This 'thing' you have for me, this obsessional thing with its so many sexual references reveals deep fear and frustration about yourself and your sexual orientation. It's getting clearer all the time. You should get some help before you explode all over yourself and your life. |
Nov. 21 gary c 418 posts | Frisco Joe You did a good thing when you apologized to me and the others on this site for your constant attacks on those you disagree with. I accepted it and never said another thing why did you start the attacks all over again? You are repeating your tired old lines over and over. Why must you keep attacking me when you know that when I say you don't know enough about how to play the game the way it was meant to be played is true. Just hitting the ball far is not the whole game I have never seen you post anything about defense that's because you are a one dimensional player who found if you spend enough on a bat you can play with the big boys. Swing hard hit ball far! Believe it or not there is a lot more to the game and if you need help I am sure some of the guys would be more than happy to teach them to you. I should have known this before how can I argue with someone who just can't understand the finer parts of the game thru no fault of there own because when you start to compete late in life you can't be expected to grasp the concept of team sports. Maybe that is why you have had trouble staying on a team. Stop worrying about me and worry about your self. I really don't care about who or what you partner is it's none of my business |
Nov. 21 ChiPrimeMarty Men's 60 104 posts | I enjoy playing Senior Softball regardless of how hot the bats are. I think most players would would still love to play this game even if we used U-trip/NSA bats or balls that took some distance off senior bats. IMO less hot equipment would not hurt this game and possibly improve it, for 3 reasons: 1) Fewer home run outs, and trying not to hit a home run. Players like hot bats because they can hit the ball harder & farther, but then the home run limit becomes a factor that IMO does not enhance the essence of the game. We once won a game on a walk-off homer by the other team because it was an out. 2) Injuries. Face it, we're not as fast and our reflexes aren't as quick as 20 years ago but a lot of guys are just as strong. I see more injuries from batted balls at Senior tourneys than I do in all-ages league play that my Senior teammates still play in. If someone gets killed (a real possibility) then we might see a pitcher screen or some other rule change that we like even less than lesser bats. 3) Defense & shortened games. With slower players & hotter bats Defense becomes less of a factor and games are more likely to go less than 7 innings. Anyway, that's my two cents. I don't want to get into an argument about psychology and egos. I just want what's best for our sport and those who love to play it. |
Nov. 21 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | You're obviously obsessed with me in some psycho-sexual way. It's clear from your frequent gay references and it's making me and others uncomfortable and sick. Please stop. You're troubled but it's not my or our community's fault. Get some help. |
Nov. 21 gary c 418 posts | Who are you talking to? Marty just blew your hot bat idea away and you come with that. |
Nov. 21 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Gary, I don't want to have to talk with you or about you anymore. Leave me alone and get some help. |
Nov. 21 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Marty. You're entitled to your opinion even though the great majority of those who play senior ball disagree. We think lively bats and balls are integral to the experience/enjoyment of playing. But it's cool. Opinions are like pie-holes. Everybody's got one. |
Nov. 21 gary c 418 posts | TO QUOTE BIG JACK:Frisco Joey "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH" MARTY BY KO GAME SET MATCH |
Nov. 21 birdie Men's 70 802 posts | Hi gary c, Just because somebody comes up on your side does not mean the discussion is over. Marty has some great points and I do agree with his observations. As I told our 3rd baseman when he came into the infield from the outfield with the way things are it is 50-50. You put the glove down and sometimes it goes in and some times it doesn't. I enjoy playing both ends of the game but would not want to change the way we play the game. just my opinion. Thanks Harry |
Nov. 21 gary c 418 posts | I agree with you Harry just trying to show what it's like when the village idiot dose it to us on the other side. I don't agree with you but I respect your opinion. The game is better when it is played the way it was meant to be played. I have said this before why don't you think the pro's don't play with aluminum bats? SOMEONE WOULD GET KILLED |
Nov. 21 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Gary C, my Number One Fan, has let the cat out of the bag. He's obsessed with me and it has nothing to do with me. He bashes people and what do we know about gay or black or short or whatever kind of people bashing? Those who can't live and let others live and be as equals are profoundly ignorant people marked by deep insecurity about themselves, in Gary's case, his sexual orientation, and their fundamental worth as people. They need to put others down to convince THEMSELVES that they're not what they feel/fear THEMSELVES to be. Obviously, Gary's worried that he's gay given all his male sexual references and that's why he bashes someone else, anyone to try to prove to us and himself that he is not. That he is in fact "better" than he perceives himself to be. It's OK, Gary, whoever you are. We're all God's children and should be treated and valued equally by all. But your problem is not our problem. It's getting clearer, too why you wouldn't want us to know who you really are. Get some help. |
Nov. 21 birdie Men's 70 802 posts | gary c, I watched a 48 and over baseball game at the Roy Hobbs tourney in Fort Myers last weekend. I found it very enjoyable. They have gone to wooden bats where they were aluminum in the past. The last time I played baseball we used aluminium bats (many many years ago). I did not like the outfielders playing maybe 220 from home plate. I found the same thing true with the ASA bats in Burlington N.C. this past August. There was much more infield defense with the ASA bats. I and a lot of players did not find it as enjoyable. My brother told me to find the Budweiser sign that was at the Red Sox main spring training field and a few years back he hit it over the e in the sign for a home run . I believe that was with the aluminum bat. We enjoy playing no matter what the equipment maybe. I believe that we can all find a league where we are happy playing in and go and play. Thanks Harry |
Nov. 21 gary c 418 posts | Joey you lied again you do want to talk to me. When your throw the race card with no proof that means you know you are wrong.Typical of a long haired hippie stuck in the 60s.I am your biggest fan I have nominated you for the VILLAGE IDIOT'S HALL OF FAME . "REAL MEN PLAY REAL SOFTBALL NO STEROIDS NO LOADED BATS |
Nov. 21 gary c 418 posts | Harry, Very true and if you go back to my first post I never said we had to change I just asked if it would be possible to have a few tournaments with ASA bats. That's when the village idiot went nuts. The rest is history. |
Nov. 21 birdie Men's 70 802 posts | gary c, There are ASA tourneys and then there are the rest. As far as I know ASA is the only organization that plays with the restricted bats. They do however play with the 44 core ball. I am not sure about that but I do think I am right. I also believe that if that is what you want to play then go and play it. Thanks Harry |
Nov. 21 Jose #12 Men's 60 89 posts | Harry I agree with you. I know our team prefers hitting with the senior bats and we are far from a power team. In winning the 60 AAA's in Ft. Myers, we hit three HR's in 7 games (2 of those with a 20 MPH tailwind). Jose |
Nov. 21 gary c 418 posts | Harry, I have and enjoyed them much more then playing what I call video softball. I like the challenge that you have to hit a ball well to be rewarded. Plus no screens,no guys playing infield looking like catchers no home run limits because only real power hitters hit homers. I just thought other associations might want to do the same to test the players skills. I think you must admit that weak hitters are much better hitters with hot bats. |
Nov. 21 Al33 Men's 55 183 posts | mad dog, Don't blame the ball for your leg injury a few weeks ago. If you got hit in the leg 4 ft. off 1st base by as you say a power hitting lefty, it doesn't matter if it was a 44-375 or a 52-275. You ain't that far away from the batter. |
Nov. 21 gary c 418 posts | He might have had chance to get out of the way with the 52-275. |
Nov. 21 Al33 Men's 55 183 posts | I can't believe that you really think that is true. |
Nov. 21 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Jose, Birdie and AI. Right on. You represent us the great majority of those who play senior softball and the Associations that serve us. |
Nov. 21 gary c 418 posts | A133 I do and you know it is true. Even if it hit him he might have been able to at least had time to turn so it would have been a glancing blow. I just don't understand this macho bullshit. If the village idiot is in your corner you must admit that's scary. By the way you better ID or the village idiot will think your not a man. |
Nov. 21 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Gary. You're obviously obsessed with me and all your sexual references have made me and some of us uncomfortable. I've asked you not to talk to me or disparage me but you seem unable to stop. You need help. |
Nov. 21 gary c 418 posts | Frisco Joey I didn't refer to you unless you are the village idiot I was talking to A 133. If you looking for that kinky stuff go on one of those gay bay sights and leave us normal guys alone |
Nov. 21 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Normal guys aren't sexually obsessed with other men, Gary like you are with me. Ironically, you did not reveal your identity but we all know now who you are. It's the fear of being gay or anything that's debilitating, Gary. It's the fear that makes one ignorant and damages the personality. It's the fear that makes one attack others and try to convince yourself your not as bad as you believe. And you thought you could remain anonymous. You can run, son, but you can't hide. Get some help. |
Nov. 21 gary c 418 posts | Leave me alone YOU predator no wonder you were a teacher in the shity by the bay. Leave me alone HOMO JOE. YOU NO TALENT SOFTBALL SISSY |
Nov. 21 gary c 418 posts | SWING HARD HIT BALL FAR NO CATCH BALL |
Nov. 21 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | He reveals himself again and again. He's one sick puppy around his sexual identity. He disparages with every stroke unable to control his behavior on the site. Obviously, he needs help and we need some help dealing with him. Outfielder's right. There's no place on the board for this kind of sick, disparaging, unaccountable, disturbed and irresponsible behavior. No place at all. |
