Posted | Discussion |
July 5 Coyote 1 posts | We are a 65AA team about to play in a tournament with AAA teams. We have been granted permission to accept 5 runs or use 11 players. We are not used to using 11 players. Which is the best choice? 5 runs or 11 players? |
July 5 Dbax Men's 65 2101 posts | Coyote, I would take the 5 runs. |
July 6 Lecak Men's 60 1026 posts | Typically are your games closer than 5 runs with your oponents, if not 11 players sounds interesting. If your outfield is strong go with 5 infielders, if your infield is strong the reverse, 11 fielders could really make a difference in the open inning. |

If you have hitters that can stay away from the middle then go with the 11 fielders. That middle fielder takes a lot of hits away especially with a runner on first. Also if you have a players who is a good fielder (Extra SS) with a strong arm I might also select the 11 players. He can save you a lot of runs. |
July 6 Ken Men's 55 462 posts | Coyote, Against AAA I would definitely take the extra man and put him behind second, just like in 16 inch, to eliminate the cheap hits up the middle. By placing your pitcher a little to the side and moving the 4/6 infielders closer to the holes you will have a real tight infield. I’ve seen teams that put the extra player in the short outfield areas but he can’t throw anyone out from there. I hope Einstein sees this thread. If I was to make any changes to the present format for 12 inch this would be it. Eliminate the cheap hits and put more emphasis on hitting skill. Einstein, your thoughts? |
July 6 Ken Men's 55 462 posts | Gary, Well for one thing the hole is at least twice the size of the 3-4 and 5-6 holes. All you have in the way is a pitcher who is doing his best to bailout and not get killed. It is the path of least resistance and takes less skill, in MHO to produce the desired results. So, go ahead and hit your grounders up the middle. There are no rules against it. But I don’t consider it as “well struck” as a liner over the infield or in the gap. Personally, if I hit a grounder up the middle it is a miss. I never intend to do it. Yes the results are the same, but it wasn’t my intention. Thanks for listening. |
July 7 Ken Men's 55 462 posts | Okay, I’ll make sure I tell them to quit or learn a new position. They might be in full agreement with guys constantly firing the ball at them trying to hit a hole that you could drive a freight train through. Or maybe I should have them attend the “Gary19 School of Softball Pitching” to learn how to play their position correctly. With all sincerity. |
July 8 Ken Men's 55 462 posts | I have no problem with the way pitchers for my team play their position. Maybe I shouldn’t have used the obvious light-hearted exaggeration of “bail out” in describing the way they attempt to get in a defensive position. That would have been easier for you to understand and then you wouldn’t have felt that I was attacking your manhood or pitching prowess. There isn’t a game that goes by without my pitchers having to defend themselves from a liner right back at them, usually about head high. They never complain (well, maybe a little, lol) and certainly don’t presume to wear their position as a badge of honor like you seem to. Why don’t you just continue (and continue) to rail against the use of the Ultra ll (hmm, getting a connection there) and quit looking for gold stars because you stand forty- some feet away from the batter. The initial reason for this thread was to ask an opinion on what is more of an advantage, 5 runs or 11 men. I attempted to give my opinion and gave reasons for it but you seemed to feel that you had to rationalize the need to go up the middle. So, go up the middle. If that’s where your abilities lead you feel free to do it. My opinion was that it is easier to go up the middle because of the size of the hole there. Therefore, I feel that the extra fielder should be positioned there. Coyote, I hope this opinion was of use to you and Gary, get a life (oh, and a gold star)! |
July 8 Ken Men's 55 462 posts | I don’t want to bore the rest of the people on this board with any more of this. Why don’t I just say #$%^& you ☺ lol and be done with it. If you want to continue this discussion look me up at some tournament sometime. I’ll be happy to talk to you. Ken Lange Basehawgs 55 Thousand Oaks, CA |
July 9 Fred Scerra Men's 80 542 posts | The man asked a simple question. How did we get into hitting the middle argument again. Hasn't this been beaten to death yet? |
