Thanks all. I like to see things as glass half full. If I have to cancel my reservations then so be it. With prices the way they are better to reserve and cancel then last minute flights and rooms.

Thanks all. Is it a live ball appeal? Or dead ball appeal?
Is the umpire calling r3 safe when he crosses the scoring line? Or does he stay quiet and wait until appeal is made and bag is touched?

I was correct with letting play out but I also want my umps doing it the right way.

I can't sleep and figured I would ask you all for a ruling. 1 of my umpires had this happen and didn't know when to make the call. THIS IS NOT A WHAT IF this happened lol.
1 out man on 3rd. Fly ball to left field that was caught.
Runner on 3rd left way early and crossed the commitment line but stopped before scoring line because his team was yelling go back, during the yelling runner finished crossing scoring line. 3rd baseman had the ball standing on 3rd saying he never tagged.

As the ump you make the 2nd out call on the catch but what do you do next?
1. Say nothing and allow the play to finish?
2. Call runner out as he can't go back to tag since he already crossed commitment line?
3. A variation of something else?

Looking to see if I guided my umpire correctly.

Thanks for getting back so quick.
When it was said at thr meaning that they were hotter then senior bats it threw me for a loop. Wasn't until after when talking with another coach I thought I should follow up.

Thanks again

Lb
One way or another I don't plan on using an asa bar for seniors. I just want to follow up because I go to world meeting every year and its the first time mentioned it. So I trust their judgment and if they are that hot I don't need them at league. I also need a plan for my umpires to enforce it uniformly.

Can someone confirm the asa bat ban that ssusa brought up at the coaches meeting in Vegas at worlds? The way I understood it was that the new asa bats were hotter then senior bats and cannot be used in ssusa. Question is, are there new models only? Is the same asa stamp used? What changed from last year to this year?
Purpose for me is to follow ssusa ban at home whe I'm league director. Currently we allow asa/usssa new stamp bats.
Just trying to know how to enforce this.

Thanks all
Dave
As silly as it sounds it happened.
We use the ssusa commitment line safety rule at the park im at for all leagues. This case came up in a co ed playoff game. The runner started to retreat being just a few feet from scoring line. The throw to catcher was off line.
My question came into play when discussing the ruling with my umpire after the game. ( I'm the softball director)
You gave me the answer I needed.
As long as not tagged by defense and runner doesn't re cross commitment line or slide they can basically RUN AROUND lol

The only retreat type of call I could ever imagine would be batter/ runner going to first base. That's where the question here came into thought.
Thanks again Dave.

Classification
When in commitment zone can runner retreat at all but still be im zone?
Situation
Player crossed commitment line catcher fields throw and tries to tag runner. Runner back pedals 5 feet then runs around catcher and scores.
I know any tag in zone is a safe call. I know if runner crosses back over commitment line they are out.
What im unsure of is can runner retreat at all within zone?

Why would they do this, I know but it happened. As director I want to make sure correct call was made.

Oh ok got it. I read it as the very next batter period but that's only related to a score. If dinner is on second or 3rd and a ttam v catches it they can appeal

Discussion: Runner clarification

Quick understanding of this rule

§8.5(5) • COURTESY RUNNER OFFICIALLY IN THE GAME
A courtesy runner must report to, and be acknowledged by, the umpire before play resumes. A courtesy runner
may enter the game only prior to the first pitch to any batter. A courtesy runner is in the game when he touches the
base. If a courtesy runner is determined illegal, he will be called out upon touching the base and no other courtesy unner is allowed. The original runner may not return as the runner. An illegal courtesy runner on base is
committing a continuing violation and may be called out upon appeal at any time while on base or, if he scores, prior
to the first pitch to the next batter.

Trying to understand how can a runner score before the next pitch?
Follow up if cr runs illegally but not caught until they advance to another bag he becomes legal correct?
