Discussion: Why Play Down?

Audieh - great post, but wrong question.

Here's my 2 cents worth: Virtually no one wants to "play down," but just about all of us want to be rated "fairly." I've managed and been on AA, AAA, Major, Major+ teams and none of the players on these teams wanted to be in a division where they creamed the competition. BUT, player don't wants to go to a tournament and lose 100% of its games over and over again -- most will quit or find another team after a couple of years.

Another point: It is apprpriate for teams to be moved up for 1 to 2 years after winning the Worlds. Most divisions have 100+ teams (except Major+ and some Majors) and the teams that came in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. should have a chance to win the Worlds without playing the previous year's winner..

PS Good post, Shane

Llama Man,

Sorry, I responded to the wrong post. Just confirms what my wife says about my dwindling mind.

Discussion: Clarification

A major change regarding ratings was announced at this year's Summit meeting: Each association will be responsible for its own ratings versus using to one master “Summit” rating system.

The various associations tried for years to maintain one ratings list to be used across all associations. This didn’t work because only SS USA strictly monitors rosters. So, SS USA decided to maintain its own national ratings and would no longer use the results from other associations’ in deciding the SS USA ratings.

Bottom line for me: SS USA will have the most credible ratings. Other associations will likely use SS USA’s ratings as a starting point, but I would expect rosters to be “flexible.”

Unfortunately, SS USA has not yet updated its website to reflect this change.

Discussion: Has Anyone Tracked Where The Offensive Team Hits The ball

Nancy Allen,

Thanks, good info. What skill level were the teams (AAA, Major, etc.)? Were there many home runs?

There seemed to be a huge difference at 3rd base for the first and second game. Any insight as to why?

OOOOOPS.

I just read that the quote I posted is not an ad-lib. The producer said it was a myth that "I'm walking here! I'm walking here!" was an ad-lib.

Sorry guys. Someone else is up.

You got Taxi Driver.

Hint for other film: It was the first and only X-rated film to receive the Best Picture Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

There are at least 2 quotes from the Top 100 Quotes that were ad-libs. Name them.

Hints: Both were spoken and created by men who are considered two of the very best actors. Both quotes were repeated when spoken in the films. The films came out in 1976 and 1969

J3, the movie-dude,

Bill Durham - great quote, but didn't make the Top 100 list.

Rosebud is correct!

As far as I can tell, the first movie with Abbott and Costello's routine (Who's on First?.... ) was "The Naughty Nineties"

I tried to get either sports movies (A League of their own) or a quote about sports (On the waterfront). So that's why I didn't put Love Story, Forrest Gump, and Top Gun on my sports list (they are all on the Top 100 list).

2 more down, 2 more to go.

Caddy Shack is correct: "Cinderella Story. Outta nowhere. A former groundskeeper, now, about to become the Masters champion. It looks like a mirac....It's in the hole! It's in the hole! It's in the hole!"

On the Waterfront: "You don't understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I could've been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am."

Baseball another hint - The quote is very long, many words.

Winter "sports" (sledding) another hint - The quote is very short, one word.

You guys are great!

The Knute Rockne = "Win One for the Gipper" from Knute Rockne All American (Correct)

Lou Gerig = "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth" from The Pride of the Yankeer. (Correct)

Field of Dreams, League of their Own, Jerry McGuire, Rocky (Correct)

Four remaining:

Baseball Hint - Not a baseball movie, but perhaps the most quoted of all. Getting the name of the film should be awarded Trivia World Champ for Life.

Boxing Hint - Not a boxing film, but #3 on the list of top 100 quotes and about #8 all time Top 100 Films.

Golf Hint - A comedy

Winter "sports" (sledding) Hint - Not a sports film, but #17 on the list of top 100 quotes and about #1 all time Top 100 Films.(1941)

(I haven't seen Wee Willie Winkie, but found the answer in one of my Movie Guides.)

Discussion: outfielder placement

It depends upon the age and maybe skill division.

My experience: younger and more powerful players will tend to pull the ball or hit towards center. So, for these situations, I'd put my better fielders in LF/LCF (more righties vs. lefties).

Older (65+) players tend to hit to the opposite fields, so I'd put my better fielders in this order: RCF, LCF, LF/RF.

In all cases I'd put my better outfileders in LCF/RCF vs. LF/RF.

I'm interested in what others believe.
