Discussion: Loudon

I understand toe work and cost that goes into putting a tournament together like this ans of course Mother Nature didn't co-operate at all but the entrance fee should refunded or be applied somewhere else down the line at a minimum if SSUSA could secure another weekend during the year somewhere even if different age groups played different locations. You cannot penalize teams because the product promised was not provided in any form. Let's not forget the costs uncured by the players who ultimately pay their own way to attend. I am certain the SSUSA office will come up with a solution that rectifies this lost weekend. For the future, do something about your policy of cancellations as a number or teams and mamagers pleaded with you to do the right thing way BEFORE their predictions came true.

Discussion: 1-1 count survey

Just want to add that I have run senior events and league play, using a 1-1 count without a courtesy foul and found that games are at least 15 minutes shorter on average for me. A combination of hitters looking to put the ball in play and taking a lot less pitches has created an atmosphere where play is really sped up. Since younger kids have been playing this format for years now and as I really think it is the sure fire way to speed up the game. For those who complain that they won't see the pitches they want and expect with a full count, remember the ball is being lobbed at you. Sooner or later it is inevitable we use this format, and I say why not sooner. Maybe let a tournament director or two use it and have the association track it's viability. I will volunteer to do just that in an early pre-season tournament if others want to verify it's usefullness.

Discussion: player fees

Not all our players have even $150 to throw down each year. We have each guy sell signs for our golf tournament. Either come up with $ 150 or sell $200 in signs. Easy for those with cash shortages. Our team raises the money thru softball tournament and a golf tournament. I really prefer the latter as you get sponsorship for tee and green signs with company logo on it. At $100 or $200 a sign, you can make over $6k. Make a little on entrance fees and get people to donate prizes. You would be surprised how many people will donate to "Senior Softball".

A special thank you to Chuck Sharkey, the tournament director who ran a really great first class event. Facilities were superb. Fields were in top notch condition. Labatt's Blue Light was ice cold. Thanks to Michigan Vet and the Stefco Silver Stix for your post. We finally had a decent weekend this year. Lucked out on Saturday morning getting by the Long Island Jags and Sunday morning by the Durham Silver Stix or results may have been different. All in all, a great weekend seeing old friends and making new ones. Looking forward to coming back next year.

Discussion: Loss of a great teammate, Robert (Bob) Dobbins

Those of us in Northeastern PA are deeply saddened to hear the news. Bob played with us for School Colors (45+) and and Gallerie Construction (50+). We knew Bob well from the early 90's thru his retirement and move to Phoenix. He was a true gentleman and a passionate player. We will keep Nancy and his family in our prayers during this sad time. Rest in Peace.

Discussion: Northeast Team Ratings

Please do not confuse SSUSA tournaments and ISSA ones. ISSA has absolutely no process to verify rosters from even a previous tournament. No matter what division you play, teams often rated at a division higher in SSUSA decide to play below that level in ISSA so they can dominate. The rating system is not perfect but even if you are a champion at the Holy Grail Manassas Int'l Championship, you can still play at the same level the following year. In essence, ISSA just wants the money and cares not about a level playing field because teams will load up with whom ever they want and come anyway. In SSUSA you play to the level you are at because you dominated at a lower level. Usually there are no surprises when you go to a SSUSA event and the playing field is much more level.

Discussion: 4th Annual Diamond City Classic is filling up.

Contrary to any rumors, the 4th Annual Diamond City Classic tournament in Wilkes-Barre PA is going strong but the date had to be changed to avoid conflict with another association. 65, 70 and 75 teams will play July 24th and 25th while 50, 55 and 60 teams will play July 26th and 27th. The format we changed to four games in order to accommodate more teams this year and we have added another new field nearby to take on even more teams. We have space for up to 40 teams now and hope to increase the field from the fastest growing tournament in the northeast from 21 last year and 14 the year before. The host hotel, Gus Genetti's Best Western Inn right on the Square in Downtown Wilkes-Barre PA where you will find many restaurants, pubs and entertainment venues along with a huge classic car show on Friday night July 25th. Special discounts to restaurants and pubs will be made available to teams in the team package envelope and we even have our local International League team, the Railriders, a Yankee affiliate, in town for the weekend playing the Pawtucket Red Sox both Friday and Saturday night.
Wilkes-Barre is a 4 hour or less from Delaware, Maryland, New England, New York, New Jersey and most of Pennsylvania. Go onto the tournament page and register your team today so you won't miss out on all the action.

Discussion: PA 50+ League seeks Teams and Players

The Palmer (PA) Veterans Softball league in eastern PA (Lehigh Valley) is seeking at least one team or more for the upcoming season. Games are played Monday to Thursday but the league is proactive to scheduling to suit particular needs of each team. Double Headers begin at 6:00 PM each evening. Players in search of teams will be accommodated with both younger (50+)and older(60+) teams now playing in the league. Each team is allowed up to two players age 47 and up to fill a roster. Two playing divisions assure competitive balance among teams and end of season tournament is also held. Season runs from beginning of May through end of August. For info, look under leagues section of the site or contact me here.

Discussion: Why are teams not rated the same in USSA SPA ISSA

The ISSA used to set standards accordingly with others but have become aligned with the ASA National office concerning classifications. The ASA relies on Local Commissioners to provide a class for teams entered in their National Tournaments. Since no local official wants to stand in the way of someone playing, they usually let the teams make the call. The exception is the State of PA where classification is actually scrutinized and teams for the most part play where they belong. As long as there is money to be made, the ISSA is oblivious to real classifications as is apparent when National Tournament winning teams continue to play at the same level year after year.
With the SSUSA tracking players over the past few years, we have a much more fair and equitable tournament field week in and week out. Just wish we wouldn't constantly see the same teams going back and forth between divisions where they sandbag when class is raised, appeal, get reinstated and then dominate at the lower level again and again.
