Discussion: Is it a double play

O.K., intertepations have been opined. I would suggest that Rick Seifman V.P. of Umpires clarify timmyb's question. Personally I would like to know the Right answer. I respect my fellow players input and they may be correct. Let's get a Final word on this. Rick I would think is the person to explain and get us and our fellow Senior Players the correct interpretation according to the SSUSA Rulebook.
If not Rick, then Who ?

If I may contribute. As I read the Rules and being a former Umpire, from what I read by timmyb's description of the play. The call made is correct. Note Rule Section 1 ,# 1.10 page 2 Senior Softball-Rulebook 2019 - 2020. It is a rather long Sub- Rule so I won't repeat the whole Rule here. However please note the following sentence within this Rule. When reading take special note of this sentence, "A ball that strikes anything other than a ,DEFENSIVE PLAYER, while in flight, is ruled the same as if it struck the the ground". I interpete that to mean, that if the ball strikes any part of a Defensive player, ball is live and if caught Before it hits the ground then it is an out. Therefore if a players leaves his base before the 'catch' and ball is then thrown to the base once occupied by the base-runner, before said player returns to his original base. He then is declared out. Hence it is a Double-Play. Also note Section 1 , #1.42 page 8. Fly ball in Flight, caught in Flight off a Defensive player is Fly Ball Out. A Player leaves without Tagging up is Out, same as a Fly Ball that is caught without a deflection.
For me it is pretty straightforward. Ball hits Defensive Player, Ball goes into Flight Mode, Defensive Player Catches Ball Before Ball Hits the Ground, Out # 1, Runner on Base Leaves Base Before Ball Is Caught, Defensive Player Throws to Base Before Runner Returns, Out #2, Double-Play.
Interesting conversation, if I have missed something please advise. Just want to get the Correct Call just as timmyb wants.

Discussion: World Masters Playing at Sunset Park Softball Complex - 2019

Just want to give a Shout-Out to LVSSA in Prepping Fields between games. I registered a complaint for LACK of Field Prep last year at Sunset Park This year Fields for the most part were prepped. My Team and, I am certain the other Teams that played at Sunset appreciated your efforts. A decidedly marked improvement over last years efforts.
Thank You,
Tomar

Discussion: World Masters Playing at Sunset Park Softball Complex

Played at Sunset Park several times. Fields are not the best, but they are playable. Now Here's the caveat, " Where in the World was the maintenance crew to groom the Infields"! We played there last year, we had all late morning and afternoon games. No problem with game schedules. Major Problem with Field grooming. The fields that we played on were not Groomed put one time,of which I asked around to have the fields groomed for what turned out to be our last game of the Tourney. A couple of player's from one of the Las Vegas Team stepped up and dragged the field. Kudos to them, put they are also playing, why was the burden on them to drag the Infield ?
My understanding is, that LVSSA/SSUSA are partners in putting this #1 Tourney on. I also was told that LVSSA was in charge of making sure that the fields are available and playable, including grooming between games or some kind of scheduled dragging. Be it between all games, (which is preferable) or between every third game, etc. ? By the time we and ALL teams were playing in the late morning/afternoon the fields were atrocious ! Bad hops became commonplace. It was in one word Ridiculous. Especially when you consider the cost and the Importance of the World Masters. If I was given correct information regarding their responsibility on Maintenance of the Fields. Then LVSSA needs to step up and Honor this part of their Commitment.
I can only speak to the infield conditions at Sunset Park. Do not know of issues at the other facilities.
If I am incorrect on who should be held accountable,LVSSA,regarding Dragging the infields, I would like to know who IS the responsible party so as to hold them accountable.
Bottomline this negligence needs to be taken care of.
With Respect,
Tomar

No Response ? I realize that Staff is busy, but thought that some kind of response would be forth coming. As noted on the above messages, scores and complete standings would be useful for Managers to assess their Teams competitiveness within the current Tourney, particularly as it pertains to the Teams Rating.
Obviously I must surmise that the scores will not be forthcoming. Maybe I missed something regarding the lack of response, but even a yes or no would have been something. I am disappointed by the lack of response, but life moves on, as will I.

Suggest that if you are over 70 and Border New Mexico you jump at this opportunity to play-on this Team. Manager knows how to Manage and he has players that are of good character and know how to play the game.We have played them many times through the years both at the 60's and the 65's.
Good Luck Dick on putting your Roster together.

Jon44 just so you know. Elite will be at Sunset with their Travelling Truck full of Adidas and other Softball Gear. I just left their office and spoke with Carlos. So you will have options to make your purchases. Carlos told me he would have the Adidas 2 Part Bat available.
Elite is one of the Main Corporate supporters of Senior Softball and SSUSA Tourneys.

p.s. No I do not work for Elite. However I have been very happy with their Products and Service.

Discussion: Thoughts and Prayers to Y'all Next

Recognizing that Senior Softball is,indeed played in the Autumn of our Lives. We are Blessed, in that we are able to play the game we love at this Season of our Journey. Such is why we are wise to count this Blessing to participate in playing our Game and sharing our lives with like minded men and women. We will in the course of playing our sport lose our fellow Teammates, no matter the Team they are playing with. The emotions of loss are real. There by poor fortune go I. But better yet, There By Good Fortune go each of us, as we are remembered by the men and women who have made our lives richer by competing with or against us. For the love of the Game we we are ultimately Honored by the memories we share and the lives we have touched playing this Game We Love.
In the Honor of Sharing this Game with Wayne, (whom I have never met), I am touched by your passing and those fellow Teammates in the past and the inevitable passing of my Fellow Teammates of the future.
God Bless Wayne and his Family. May your memory's of Wayne bring you strength.

High Fives to Donnie and his crew, including Umpires. We play this Tourney to Qualify Players and prepare for The Worlds. Donnie and his staff did a fine job of staging the Tourney with only 4 Fields to work with !
