I agree with Bruce, 4 balls and 3 strikes. Umpires can keep the game moveing. Make certain the "on deck batter" is ready, if he's too slow, start pitching. If the defense is too slow and the batter's ready, start calling balls. Mike, you make some really good points.

Sorry guys, counter point. I hate the 1 and 1. I have never been able to get used to it, just an old dog, new trick thing I guess. It starts the batter off having to swing at the first close pitch and from a strategy standpoint is most benificial to the pitcher. A good smart pitcher must really love the 1 and 1. Hitting is what we work on the most and strive to be good at. iIt's also what most people use to determine an individuals level of play. Defense is critical but if a player is a good hitter, he's going to play even if the defense is average. Let's not penalize the hitter in order to speed up the game. Hustling in and off the field just a litlle speeds the game up plus the umps have the capability of keeping the game moving. IMO

Discussion: new bat

Pete88, I have not tried the sleeve but it sounds interesting. Gramps, "NO BATTING CAGE" is pretty much the consensus of opinion. Althought the bat is has good pop out of the wrapper, it improves noticebly after 100 to 200 swings. That's the scoop I received and I found it to be true in my case. You will love the bat. Gary's right, rotate the bat.

TNG, I'm directing my inquiries to you. Are you in denial? You ignored all of my other questions and went directly to justifying your actions by the actions of others.

TNG, I \'m curious about your purpose, although I believe I know what it is.

Why do you keep pounding the \"same old issues\", when no matter what \"anyone\" says, your opinion will not change. You seem to be forged in mediocraty and please don\'t ask me \"HOW SO\", that\'s just \"my\" opinion and no matter what anyone says, it won\'t change. Sports are certainly subject to controversy but it\'s not the main focal point for the true player\'s. The majority of these posters enjoy discussing, not arguing the game. You, on the other hand, seem to enjoy arguing and perhaps robbing those indviduals of some of the joy they have been able to retain from the game. You seem bitter and angy about something. Are you not handling the aging process very well? Do you resent those who wish to recapture the exuberance of their youth? You have the right to your opinion, but respect other\'s posts and don\'t keep playing the same old dull records when you don\'t have anything constructive to add.

With all due respect, you do get a little obnoxious, or is \"that\" your \"purpose\"?

And he was "Branded". I never had a broken sword but I did have a "Rifleman" winchester as a kid. Wasn't he Marcus McCane in the series? I don't remember the "Branded" character's name.

Discussion: How To Generate Power In Your Softball Swing!

Tater, I will be there and I'm really looking forward to it. I posted a message to you on Softballfans .com.

I believe the linear swing may help me with some of the problems I've been having. Bruce has given me some valuable information. Hopefully it will pay off in Pensy.
I'm not a "power" hitter so the linear should suit me well.

See you there.

Discussion: How To Generate Power In Your Softball Swing!

Bruce, I've been reading up on the linear swing and it really intrigues me. Although it is not a new concept, I had not heard about it. Some articles state it doesn't generate as much power but I've seen you hit and your power certainly contradicts that. The linear swing definitely seems to fit my type of hitting, moderate power and line drives. It seems that although the majority of power hitters have been strictly rotational hitters; the high percentage hitters (Tony Gwynn, George Brett ,Pete Rose etc.) have been linear or a combination linear/rotaional, depending on the count. It seems to significantly improve the odds of consistant solid ball contact and reduce hitting off the handle (over extending). I like it, thanks for telling me about it.

Discussion: Fair enough, let\'s move forward...

Good Points TNG
1) I don't like the mat. Heck, it took me over 50 years to get used to the "real strike zone". Now they took it away from me.

2) I would have no problem with banning them except for the fact that I just purchased my first. Using ASA bats would work for me.

3) I like the two plates, although there are times when I wish the catcher had to tag me out. At first base, most of the injuries seemed to have been collisions caused by the runner going inside the bag or the fielder having to reach in toward the base path. At home, it seems the most prone to injury would be the catcher if the runner decided not to slide. At these two bases the fielder seems to be more at risk of injury if the runner does not slide(for whatever reason). The double bases cuts down the odds of collision. I believe at 2nd & 3rd, runner collisions seldom happen except when intentional(taking out the 2nd baseman). The slide benefits the runner and thus puts only himself at risk of injury.

4) I agree with Tater.

5) I 'm not familiar enough with the rule.

6) Just to add one, I hate the 1/1 count especialy with the mat.

Discussion: Defibulator

Pork, I had a triple bypass several years back and a defiblulator put in a year after that. I've been advised to put a pad over it but to date have not. I don't think about it much while I'm playing and haven't had any problems. I play infield but you being a pitcher, I'm sure it's more of a concern. I know I didn't help on the recommendation but I wanted to give you my support and encourgement. Good luck. I will be playing for the "Time Bandits" 60+ AAA.

Discussion: Under Armour???

Pete D, the info I received was very helpfull, thanks guys. I will most likely go "old school". Even going with a larger size, I feel the heat/cold gear may be too restrictive for my taste. TNG, I appreciate your response, which was helpfull and honest. The post from Eviro-Vac was also interesting and helpfull. All was appreciated.
