Discussion: Home plate

Thanks for the various feedback and the clarification by the SSUSA Staff ( this is one of the benefits of having this message board).

Another reason our coaching staff should all have the rulebooks with us at all times.

Thanks again.

Discussion: Home plate

One of our players claims he was told by an umpire yesterday, on a play at the plate, that the base runner's body had beat the throw, but that he was required to touch the home plate "line" in order to be called safe. Either our player did not understand what the umpire said (which is possible) or we have interpreted the rule wrong this whole season, as we have always been under the impression that the base runner only need to break the plane of the home plate line when deciding whether he beat the throw.

If anyone is in the know, please help us out.

Thanks in advance.

Discussion: RATINGS WARS--continued

This is the type of hair splitting that one would expect from the young, non-Senior types. No one, and I mean no one, can convince me that each 5 year age division needs to be broken down into 4 distinct levels of play. But, given that they are, teams still want to split hair between each level, please Each weekend hundreds of softball teams play across the country, some go 0 - 2, while other go 7 - 0 and win the prizep. Play that same tournament the following weekend and you will undoubtedly get different results.

i have spent tons of $ going out of town and ending up 0 - 2, but that didn't make me want to drop down, rather it made me work at my game to better compete the next time out.

The Seniors already get two guaranteed play-in games, then tthree guaranteed brackets games. It is almost sounds that some of these teams want guaranteed results, too.

i speak for a lot of us who are just shaking our head at this post.

Discussion: The new Trump softballs

OK, most of us have been playing baseball/softball for the better part of 40 years or more. Now you are telling me that I need to change my swing to something called "cutting" in order to get the maximum benefit from these new balls that were tested. i think not.

I can just see it now on ESPN...MLB is introducing a new baseball that will require hitters to cut the ball for maximum effect. Hard line drives won't carry like they used to, but if players can change their swing to the new "cutting" style, they will be the new bombers.

I agree 100% with Einstein. I love to play defense and I love the camaraderie, but I would be fooling myself if I didn't admit that the reason I got back into softball via the senior circuit wasn't to mash good balls with the Ultra, period. Anything that would reduce that factor would not be well received by the majority of players that I know. Players love to hit it, let them do it. And besides, chicks dig the long ball!

Furthermore, what is the reasoning/necessity behind the manufacturers making these changes, other than bringing new/more products to the marketplace. No one that I know of is asking for a new ball that requires cutting. Are players getting hurt? Are players complaining about scores? This is the only sport I have ever played that tries to limit or penalize you for doing the very best.

Sometimes it is best to just leave well enough alone. If Trump chooses to go in this direction, then lets us Dudleys or Worth balls.

Discussion: Legacy?

Not to sound flippant or cynical, but the Legacy is a Miken Ultra in name only. This is my first year in Senior softball and I had heard about the durability issues with the standard Ultra II, so i decided to try the Legacy. Now, since this bat has a warranty, i was not foolish enough to think it would perform the same, but the drop off is quality was shocking. At this point, i only use it for BP, as it does not compare to the other bats out there - i.e., Ultra II, Combat, or Demarini.

At the end of the day, the Senior players support my experiencet, because there are very few Legacys being used at the torurnaments that i have particapted in this year. And you know as well as i do, if there is a hot bat, every one jumps on it yesterday.

Hope this helps.

No need for all the charity stuff. All tournaments carry insurance, so just get the name of the insurance carrier from the director and submit a claim. Presto, all related medical expenses will be covered in full.

Discussion: Team Ratings

Keep it simple. Reduce each age group to two levels - upper and lower. This would not totally eliminate player rating issues, but it would get rid of a great majority of the marginals ones - whether one is Major or Major + would be gone as would AAA versus AA.

Also, this would increase the size of the draws and not have the same teams paly each other again and again and again.

Discussion: Palm Springs event

My team is making plans to attend the tournament in early March in Palm Springs. One of the players on our team said he heard that the Big League Dreams fields do not allow the "Senior-only" bats. Is this true? Are those bats banned for the whole tournament, or only the games at Big League Dreams? Need to know, as obviously this will have amn impact on what bats we need to bring.

Thanks in advance.

Discussion: Too many sub classifications

My $.02 worth (i.e., not expecting everyone to agree)

I am new to senior softball, and one of the first things that surprised me were the number of classfications under each age group. I knew there were different levels for 50, 55, 60, 65, etc., but had no idea that wthin each age group there were AA, AAA, Major, and Major Plus. After acknowledging that yes, there is a wide range of talent even in our later years, I still must question the need for five year old age band being further broken down into four sub groupings - seems like overkill.

As a result, we see small draws in many divisions. Using the 50 age group in Las Vegas as an example, there were 5 AA, 16 AAA, 8 Major, and 2 Major Plus teams. Would it not have made more sense to have a 10 team upper draw and a 12 team lower draw. 55\'s had 17 teams across three divisions, 60\'s had 20 teams across three division, 65\'s had 14 teams across three division - and this is at one of the more well attended events. This is an average of only 5 - 6 teams per draw, and I wonder if it wouldn\'t be better to combine things into an upper and lower divisions and have brackets of 10 - 12 teams, with not having to play the same teams over and over being an immediate plus.

I do not expect any organization to take action based solely on my views, but I thought I would throw it out there. Seeing the difficulty that the TOC is having, I would venture a guess that two divisions per age group would help solve the low draw problem.

Have a great 2008 season.

Discussion: Comments on Las Vegas tournament

Our team particpated in this SSUSA tournament for the first time this past weekend and I would like to pass along a few observations:

1. The Freedom Park facility is absolutely abysmal. We were all keyed up to play in this event and when we drove up Friday morning and saw the fields, we couldn't believe a tournament of this magnitude would use such a complex. There are other newer facilties in and around Las Vegas that were not used that should be used in lieu of Freedom Park in the future.

2. The "extra" game concept for the teams that go 0 - 2 in the double elimination tournament play needs to be revisited. Either eliminate that game altogether or have those teams play each other as an additional game. I understand it may result in one less game for those affected teams, but sometimes that is the price we pay for not performing on a given weekedn. Also, it will shorten the bracket by one full set of games, allowing the teams to get out of there and hour and a half earlier on Sundays.

3. Please clearly define what is a "walk-off" hr. It was almost comical how it seemed to alternate each game. Not that it is a big deal, but consistency lessens the amount of rhetoric every time the first home run is hit at the start of every game.

All in all, we enjoyed our first experience and look forward to supporting SSUSA in their events in 2008. The people in the Sacramento office are great to work with, as well as the folks out at the fields, including the umpires. Please take my comments above as constructive.
