Thee Buckeye Classic (an 80-team round robin tournament in Barberton,Oh)runs three days for 75 and 80 (they play two games a day). That said, they also have the option if there are open fields in any of the three days, they may move one of their games to those open spots, which could make it a two-day tournament. But it their option, their health. We usually draw arounf six 80's and sixteen 75's (AAA). The rest of the divisions (AA and AAA) play two days (three games a day). Only AA and AAA teams and they only play games against teams in their own age and rating division. We can do it because we usually have at least 14-to-16 teams in each age group (which normally is the maximum we can handle). We also schedule our 50 and 55's for Saturday and Sunday and the 60's Friday and Saturday (best we can do for them). As I said we are a round robin (six games against six different teams all in your own age and rating class). We would never be able to do it if we were a double-elimination tournament. We know who will be playing who, what time and what fields for their their three games each day (rwo day tournament). It is more difficult for double-elimination. What do you do for teams who after playing three pool games. lose their first bracket game and then are forced to play five or six more to reach the finals in a two-day event? Might be great for 50 and 55, maybe 60. You are stretching your luck for 65, 70, 75 and 80. SSUSA does a very good job watching out for the teams's health and enjoyment with the way their events are scheduled. Joel We have SIX 80's, a six and a seven team 75 division, a 4 team 75 major (only majors we invite). a seven and a seven 65 division, seven 50's, eight 55's, a seven and a seven 70's divisions and a seven and seven 60's division. All AA and AAA. Little hard in the 60;s because for some reason thete is a shortage of 60 AA teams so we play them with the 65's which are not as strong as the other seven. Which means 13 Divisions and 13 champions all who will have played six games Makes it easier scheduling. Our schedule has been up for two weeks and everybocy knows what time, what field and who they play. Can't do the with a DE. Not looking for six team braclets in other divsions, just AA and AAA. Ho |

How about a six game round robin guaranreed six gmaes against six different teams from your own age and rating division, team with best record is the champ. We have been running our tournament that way the past six years and average around 80 AA and AAA teams (do not bring in majors). This year 80 teams. Always have at leasr 14 teams in each division with the exception of 80's (only six) and fields limit us to eight 50's and eight 55's. However, insurance companies have accepted what you have pointed out as parts of the field (tripping on a bag, running into a fence, etc), a majority do not accept a screen as part of the field. Maybe some do but others do not and more than likely they will have to eventually accept it,. But to play safe use the insurance companies that will insure the use of a screen and avoid the ones which will not. Ho |
| Nov. 8, 2015 Ho | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: SCREENS IN TOURNAMENTS Believe it or not, law suits are actualy why screens are not used rather than used. A screen is not considered part of the field and if a ball via a throw or hit deflects off the edge of the screen and happens to hit a player in the eye, some softball insurance policies will not cover the injury....because the screen is not part of the field. That said, they have been using the screen in the Barberton Silver League for six years and no players are complaining. We do not use the screen at THEE BUCKEYE CLASSIC due to the insurance "not part of the field" issue. Personally I don't like the screen but I think the problem is more the bats. It is sort of funny to hear people say,"Screens are not part of the game, we should keep playing the way it was meant to be played." I agree, let's use wooden bats the way softball was meant to be played. Ho |

Check with your manager for brackets and times, they should have already have that info. Pretty good senior tournament turnout so far with 49 at Cartersville, 49 at the Brickyad, 48 at Glen Burnia and 91 at Barberton. Looks like a good year all around for SSUSA and SPA. Ho |

One thing you should know is the SYRACUSE area travel teams are not just good , they are very good (high AAA), so your playing ability should be at a high level also.
