| March 23, 2014 ju25 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Has anybody seen CERCE? Tournment Pitcher from NY looking to join a team I just turned 60 in October. I've been playing ASA softball actively for the past 35+ years, never stopped playing softball with 20, 30 & 40 year old league division one or "A" ball players. Winner of multiple championships throughout the 90's and 2000's. I'm well known throughout Long island as a premier high arc softball pitcher and an accomplished power hitter. My delivery is very different than most softball pitchers. I learned years ago to deliver the ball with a spin from my right thigh making turning my wrist making it very hard to pick up the ball after release. When I move my index finger to the side of the ball, it comes down on an angle jamming the batters and many times striking them out. I recently joined a local LISSA team age 60 and older. When I told my 32 year old son and a great softball team mate/player that I joined the senior leagues his comment to me was "Dad, 20'25 year old's can't hit you, what will those geriatrics do facing you" Funny for him but I've been around this game a long time. I Never underestimate anyone, regardless of age. I replied to my son by saying more than likely, senior players have never stopped playing the game, just like me. I would expect more talent from them than you kiddies! With that said if you can field talented players, combining me on the mound the combination will win tournaments. You should also know that we, this senior 60's league began practicing indoors a week ago. I pitched twelve innings of one run softball. Cerce |

The difference in performance for most is minimal, so swing what feels best in your hands. The hype has the Demarini J3A as senior hot, but just like the juggy and geezer, the bat has too much flex for my liking. Bats that are getting good reviews are Demarini J3A, Aftermath, Fu-Dawg, Combat Derby Boys,Wanted, Easton L4,L6, XL2, Worth Legit,Sick,Mutant, Miken Triad. Find the bat that fits you and be patient because some take a little longer to get going than others. Every time a new bat comes out it gets hyped as the greatest, but they all still have to pass the same test. |

I must have got a bad Ambush, because my Combat original, white centenarian, black centenarian, twilight, and Worth 454 all outperform the Ambush. 300+ swings on all of them. Ambush is not a bad bat, just not the best bat for me. |

The SB34 Genesis, Nexus (black), and Z- 2000 were all great bats but none of them lasted very long. Catalyst (which the Hyper Z resembles) was an exception, but took forever to break-in, and had a small sweetspot. Looking forward to the new Easton, which for me have the best durabilty and performance (not including first batch synergy) of any composite bats on the market. Alan, thanks for the reviews, they are vey helpful in my decision making process, when it comes to choosing a new product. In my experience, prototypes have always been hotter than production models. |

The maroon launch has great durability , takes forever to break-in, and is only ok when it comes to pop & distance. I believe the gold was made in the USA and the maroon in China. |
| Oct. 4, 2013 ju25 | Topic: Bats Discussion: BOOMBAH SENIOR SLOWPITCH BAT Buddy of mine had one a couple years ago and it was horrible. It had 150+ swings when I tried it. Bat swung balanced, as I recall, and had no pop at all. We hit again on a 55 degree day to see if we could get her to open up and at 200+ swings the bat broke. Never came close to getting good IMO. I had ASA bats that would outhit the boombah, $99 wasted. Bat was black and silver if I remember correctly. |

Rich in composite sporting goods history, Combat Sports (and its affiliated companies) have been designing and manufacturing composite and hybrid-composite baseball bats and hockey sticks for brand name companies since 1994. Terry Sutherland (founder and co-owner of Combat Sports) was a VP of General Electric – Canada, in charge of the company’s materials and technology division. After leading a management buyout of GE’s Canadian composite division (FRE Composites) in 1988, Terry and his team went on to design and manufacture products for NASA, the US military as well as several high end industrial products used in various applications such as the construction of the English Channel. It was only fitting that when the hockey industry wanted to introduce a new, revolutionary hockey stick product made from composite materials that they would turn to Terry Sutherland. In late 1992, Canstar Sports, a holding company for many of hockey’s greatest brands (including Bauer, D’aoust, Micron, Lange and Cooper) approached Terry to produce the worlds first ever composite hockey shaft (up until this point, aluminum was the most advanced material used in hockey shafts). With a passion for the game that started with his father who was a member of the NY Rovers during the 1940’s, Terry quickly took an interest in the project. Later that year, Terry and Canstar reached an agreement to start a joint venture company, which acted as the design and manufacturing arm for all Bauer Hockey composite products. In 1993, Canstar Composites Technology Inc., (CCTI) was born, which marked the beginning of a company that would change the hockey and baseball industry forever. By late 1994, the world’s first commercially successful composite shaft hit the market, under the Bauer name, designed and manufactured in Ottawa, Ontario by CCTI. Terry quickly hired Stephen Fitzgerald (Combat’s current VP – Engineering), Fred St. Laurent (Combat’s current VP - Development), Kurtis Watson (Combat’s current VP - Manufacturing), and Steven Sutherland (Combat’s current President). From 1994 to 1997, CCTI designed the most advanced hockey sticks ever to hit the ice, producing over a million units under the Bauer brand, including pro product for their fleet of NHL players (Pavel Bure, Scott Stevens, Trevor Linden to name a few). In 1997, Nike, the world’s largest footwear company, purchased Canstar Sports and its affiliated brands. Consistent with the Nike philosophy regarding North American manufacturing, they quickly began to shut down all North American manufacturing, moving production to China. This would not deter CCTI, as Terry and his ownership group would reach an agreement with Nike to purchase the Joint Venture Company outright, making it a stand alone company and positioning it to now supply to all major brands in the industry. At that point, the company changed its name to CE Composites Hockey Inc., (CE Composites). By 1998, CE Composites negotiated supplier agreements with most of the major players in the hockey industry, including Hespeler, Louisville, Sherwood, Mission, and Victoriaville as well as continuing to produce composite sticks for Nike/Bauer. If you wanted to sell a composite hockey product in the 1990’s, you wanted CE Composites making it for you. They were the “who’s who” of design and manufacturing and sought after by all major brands looking to produce composite hockey sticks. CE Composites would continue to produce composite hockey sticks for the better part of the decade, however cost pressures from China and Mexico became greater and greater as the decade neared an end. Once again, faced with adversity, CE Composites was not deterred from continuing its mission to produce superior advanced composite products for the sporting goods industry. In 1999, the company would make another big leap forward, developing the world’s first commercially viable composite softball bat. After meeting with the industry’s top players, they would soon reach a supplier agreement with Worth, a market leader in the baseball / softball business, to design and produce Worth’s flagship bats, winners of three consecutive Bat Wars.™ With the new found growth in the baseball / softball business and the continuing price constraints from Chinese manufacturers in the hockey business, the company would make the decision in 1999 to exit the OEM hockey business to focus on the rapidly growing baseball / softball division. The company would continue to design and manufacture baseball / softball product for many of the industry’s market leaders up until 2004, including Worth, Rawlings, Nike and others. In 2004, K2 Sports, one of the worlds largest sporting goods company acquired Worth and Rawlings, CE Composites two largest customers. Faced with the possibility of once again losing its main customers to offshore, lower cost manufacturing, CE Composites made a company altering decision: to create a unique identity, one focused on a true players’ product lineup under their own brand and Combat Sports was born. Fairweather Sports (led by Don Cooper, Combat’s current VP of Sales and Marketing) was quickly retained as Combat’s exclusive USA distributor bringing needed baseball and softball marketing expertise into the mix. During this same time period, Steven Sutherland started a side project to pursue a life long passion: to build a new type of hockey company, with a philosophy built on superior service, advanced materials technology, and superior products designed “For Players, By Players”. Ballistik Hockey was born in 2002 and would quickly become a viable business, carving a niche amongst elite level players all over the world. Since 2004, Combat Sports has emerged as the fastest growing brand within the baseball / softball industry. Z2000+ and Z3000 are supposed to resolve the durability issues but the release date has been pushed back to mid April on the 2000+ and November on the 3000. Although the Z2000 is a good bat it will not hit as far as an UltraII, unless you get one of the bad batches. |
