Discussion: New for Vegas

I was lucky to meet Ed & swing 2 of the new Reebok bats, 27oz & 26oz. My opinion is probably not too important as I am only occasional power hitter. Also, only 10 swings each. The 26 did not feel "solid" to me, but hit o.k. the 27 was more responsive, better feel of the ball, and though not broken in @ all had some pop. I usually swing 27 balanced UII until later games, then switch to 26 UII. In the past I have used the same Combat combination, but personally am happy w/ UII. Big shout out to Ed for bringing them to our BP Thursday (Hannington's 55 AAA). He then played against us in the first game- doubling over the outfield!!

Discussion: strange play

the runner was outside the baseline, however the throw hit the bat inside the line as it was in his left hand. This should not affect the call as he was already out and only about 1/2 way to first base. The double play would have ended the inning. The offensive team was allowed the run that scored on the play and then scored twice more. They went on to win by 1 run.

Discussion: strange play

the scenario: runners on second and third, no outs. ground ball is fielded by second baseman, throws to first for the out, then first basemen throws toward home to complete double play BUT the throw hits the bat of the batter/runner going to first carrying his bat, about halfway to first. Whats the proper call?

In our league the runner must start behind the catcher.

Discussion: Player Ratings

i play in this league and we have some unusal circumstances. we are in new england- which means a limited number of players. our league is spread out over a large area, with teams playing home and away series, often 50 to 75 miles apart. This leads to players wanting to play with their "home boys," mostly because of travel requirements- read car pooling. The other issue is that tournament players like to play together as much as possible, for obvious reasons. We have a short season, very small player pool, limited facilities and tight schedule so keeping teams interested is important to keep the league going. Most teams pick players from the closly surronding areas, and we have 2 divisions of play- one for older and less athletic players, so there are opportunities for any one interested. Drafting is not in the best interest of the league because players don't like to "travel" to their home field, especially if it's distant. I may have been one of the players that Fred complains about, but after 2 undefeated seasons I chose to go to another- hometown- team to play with guys I know. I don't have an answer to this but for sure it SHOULD be about playing.

Discussion: pitching screens

we use a screen in our local league and any ball that hits any part of it is a foul ball and treated like any foul ball i.e. on third strike it is an out. Thrown ball is live. Screen is placed in front of the mound not more than 6 inches to either side. pitcher must adhere to current pitching rules. We use this for senior & co-ed. I have not heard a single complaint.

Discussion: courtesy runners

I think that this is a rule that can and sometimes is abused. In a recent tourney, I witnessed a team that used 3 courtesy runners every inning, that were not playing defense nor batting. While they used other runners also, these 3 fella's only ran. My team was on the first base side, so these guys came to our dugout at the end of their defensive inning so as to be prepared. This was within the scope of the rule. Of course they were all fast and knowledgable on the bases. The real asset they provided was fresher legs and arms ( fatigue comes in other forms also)at the plate and on defense, especially at the end of a Tourney. I commend the coach for finding guys to do this!! However, my interpretation of the intent of the rule is not to gain an advantage, but to keep players in the game longer career wise. If a player is injured, do what we can to help him play, but if he can run in the out field he should be able to run bases. We all use the rule to our advantage, myself included, to go with a faster guy in situations. I would like to see the rule be modified to read that courtesy runners come from the line up players. This would include EH. I believe this might get more batters, EH's, in the game at strategic spots, so as to run for another player. But also treat the team with 20 players equal to the team that plays 10 or 11 guys when we get to Sunday, where fatigue from length of service comes into play.If defensive players are running for others, a good coach will be more restrictive of runners, prefering to keep all healthy. My version might read: Courtesy runner must be someone in the active line up, including all defensive players that have have been removed from the game. I realise that a shifty coach will figure out a way around it. Any one else?

we had a "senior Baystate Bombers- now 60+ guys, that won @ the first 3 T.O.C.. I believe I am the only player to play on both teams, with 5 appearances. Great fun and a really good format, especially considering the extra curricular activities.
