| March 7 retired2013 Men's 65 6 posts | Player running to a base misses that base while advancing. An appeal is made and upheld. If a runner scores during this process, what is the ruling as to score counting based on the number of outs? |
| March 7 coop3636 514 posts | If there are less than 2 outs, the runner who missed the base is out , the run scores and play continues. If there are 2 outs, the run does not count, the player who missed the bag is out, the inning is over (or half over) If this is not correct, I am sure I will be told so. Coop3636 |

There are a few more factual issues that need to be considered ... Generally, this is a "timing play" and the run(s) score if occurring before the successful appeal and there were less than two outs when the play began ... IF there were two outs when the play began ... • No run(s) are scored if the appeal results in a force out for the 3rd out of the ½-inning at bat ... Example: Runners on 1st and 3rd, appeal is made that R1 missed 2nd base while R3 scored ... Same result if the successful appeal was for the batter-runner missing 1st ... • Slightly different facts ... Runners on 2nd and 3rd (1st open) with two outs ... R2 misses 3rd on the way to Home and defense appeals ... R2 is out for missing 3rd and the ½-inning at bat ends, but R3 scores if he crossed the scoring plate or scoring line before the appeal was granted ... Hope this helps! ... |

| March 7 coop3636 514 posts | Dave The appeal has to come after play has stopped. I have never seen an appeal before play has stopped. It is not an appeal if you just throw to the bag and the runner is called out during a live play Is this not correct? |

Your last two lines describe a "live ball appeal", such as throwing behind a runner who left early on a caught fly ball ... Although not an appeal, let's say the R1 obviously missed 2nd base, the defenders are all hollering about it, and the ball is thrown to 2nd and the bag is touched ... That would be an interesting scoring in the book, but would simply be a force out at 2nd for the third out (an no run scores) ... |
| March 9 Wayne 37 Men's 65 773 posts | How about the Rule Maven give us something about multiple appeal plays? I can't find it in the SSUSA rulebook. If the Rule Maven is going to bogart every discussion, if would be nice to hear their take on those scenarios. |

I am a rule maven and thank you for the compliment.. what exactly would you like to know about multiple appeals on a runner? btw there was no reason to "bogart" this post because Dave already gave the correct answer ... and you never posted an answer which would have needed to be corrected.. |

| March 10 B.J. 1108 posts | well if you are looking for an example of a multiple appeal on the same runner here is one.. scenario.. runner on 2nd, batter hits a deep fly ball that is caught .. runner tags and scores on the play.. (appeal 1) the defense appeals the runner on 2nd left early but umpire rules runner is safe on a good tag.. (appeal 2) the defense then appeals that while the runner was advancing to home he missed 3rd base.. umpire rules that the runner did miss 3rd base.. runner is out and no run scored |

Would be nice if you reference your source though since you're always pontificating this is a SSUSA website and you only discuss those. A Rules Maven would reveal their source as varication. Here is one for you. Runners first and third. One out or no outs doesn't matter. Batter hits a deeps fly ball to center that is caught and both runners leave their base early. Ball comes in and defense appeals that the runner at first left early. Umpire rules out. Defense then appeals runner at the third left early. What is the ruling? FYI ~ Dave didn't give a what is a multiple appeal. Since the runner left first early and missed 2nd base. They are appealing the missed base since the throw went into 2nd base. While the force is technically in place. The runner is assumed to have acquired the base once they have gone past it. The defense must then make a proper appeal. It is also scored the same way you would score the out without the missed bases. |
