SPA IN GLEN BURNIE
i was in the SPA tournament this w/e and i will never go there again. friday and sat. went well, but come sunday, there was a shortage of umpires.we were scheduled to play at 9am and there was no ump. so we got a player(asa ump) to call our game. we then were sceduled to pllay at 11am. and found out there were no umps on the next field for the 1st 2 games. so we finally played at 2pm. an ump finally showed. the 55 aaa tourny was probably over around 9pm. this is very poor for what ever reason "no umpires" . i hope the other divisions faired better.

The 50AAA had the same plight. We only had one of the assigned tournament umps for the final game. I'd like to thank the guys that I saw stand-in (Lou, Sonny, guy from Central Pa, I'm sure there were others) for doing a great job. I sure hope they got paid. The tournament director and the SPA should be ashamed of themselves for letting this happen. For the amount of money they charge to play in these things it was really a disgrace. I heard that something happened at one of the Sat. night games between one of the umps and the tourny director and he walked off the field. Is this true? Perhaps theer was a "Blue Flu" on Sunday?

there was an argument with an umpire. with which team i do not know, but the umpire threw the player out of the game. the player and mgr went to the TD and the TD re-instated the player. so the umpire walked. thats what i got from my manager of central pa.

If that ejection was the cause of the umpire shortage, the incident that you mentioned was a 50 major game between Harrison's and Sweet Construction. A member of Sweet Const. was ejected for directing profanity toward the umpire. For this he was ejected, and when more profanity was directed toward the ump the player was tossed from the entire tournament. The manager of Sweet appealed to the TD, and the player was reinstated. From what I heard this did not sit too well with the ump and he walked out. But I also heard there were other scheduling conflicts with some of the other umps, but I don't know this for sure. But overall it was the worst run tournament that I have seen in years!

Ever wonder why it is so hard to get people to be umpires?

we have enough prol's playing, but a TD who doesn't back his umps for something like that doesn't deserve to have anymore tourneys.its always been u cuss u get tossed.i don't blame the ump for walking.
we play a lot of SPA here in tx and don't have a prol with them(well except for the one time 60 min drop dead rule).
