| Oct. 27 billyd12 3 posts | While my team did not place in the 55 major division, I think the 325 fences and outstanding fields provided an excellent venue for the games. Not many homeruns were hit, most by the bigger power hitters. The better defensive players ruled the bigger field and the wannabe "power" hitters found themselves flying out more often in that extra 25 foot zone. I did see some long hruns hit, so legit power was not an issue. Some great outfield play and the teams with speed had the edge. Not the best finish for my team but a fair game with defense rewarded and fly outs to those who mishit. The major plus 55s, seemed to have a good game too, without being a homerun fest like I read in Vegas. I wish all parks were as nice and had the 325 foot fences like they did at grayhawk. congrats to Travelodge and Roberts. |
| Oct. 28 butch17 Men's 55 412 posts | billyd12, Thanks for the congrats from all of Travelodge. I agree the 325' fences put the whole game of softball back in softball. Defense was a big part of the game again and the home run hitters still hit theirs and the ones that could not did not. Butch |
| Oct. 28 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | hey guys congrats(butch).sounds there was a lot of fun there.don't let stein know as this will become a tirade b/c hardly any hr's were hit.i do think if they stay with current balls and bats the fences should be back at 325,hey little league did it(205 to 225),why not the older generation. good luck next yr guys. |
| Oct. 28 butch17 Men's 55 412 posts | mad dog, Thanks I appreciate the congrads. There were home runs hit and some monsters but they came from the guys that hit home runs unlike vegas where almost everyone was a home run hitter in all age groups and divisions. |
| Oct. 28 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | yeah i understand that part.i'm a 15-20% hr hitter max.that means in 20 abs i might get 2 hrs,unless i'm on.i shouldn't be getting them at a 40-50% clip,like i can sometimes with the u-2 or combat.i had 4 at huntsman games in 14 games,thats about right for me.now that 325 might have kept me in the park,but i can do other things with a bat. |
| Oct. 29 billyd12 3 posts | mad dog I think this combo of ball and bat and fence distance just made a nice game and gave outfield defense and speed an even hand vs. pure homerun power. I would guess some major teams hit only several homeruns and The major plus finals were on a field with the wind in, so that hurt some but it seemed to me to be a good and fair game. I was not at Vegas, but a buddy hit his first 4 homeruns of the year and told me Gerkle had like 25 homeruns in one game. A power hitter should have to hit a ball 85% to get it out, and a 65% mishit, should be a fly out, not a senior bat homerun. I saw a hitter, hit a line drive over that fence and to me, that shows there is enough bat ball combo. There should be a penalty cushion for the sluggers and the opposite premiem for good defense. Just a nice balance. |
| Oct. 29 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | sounds good biily,but some will disagree with us on the 325 being to far and to much field to cover.they want a 300 or less field so they can be hero's.personally i think a switch to the new asa ball(52-275) would let us play on any size field and still not have to worry about safety and those 65% mishits that do go out.yes i have had mishits go out myself,but i can get away with a 60% mishit LOL,more than likely my hit needs to be at 80% or above to get 300' and prolly closer to 90% for the 325',which it should be. good luck and fun in the future. |
| Oct. 30 E4/E6 Men's 70 873 posts | The idea of 325' fences has been tossed around for several years, I have been told that the extra 25' would add about 1025 Sq feet of ground for each outfielder to cover. Is this a viable solution to the Hot Bats/Balls issue? We see outfielders panting as it is, add that much more field and watch them fall. |

| Oct. 30 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | well that is what the 325 fence is doing--its change,not sure what you mean.if we want hot equipment we need to change to bigger fields,so only the real hr hitters hit them(hr's).yeah i like hitting a good ball,but i'm also there for safety and like playing defence,our equipment does allow a lot of it to be played,i would rather err on the side of safety. |
| Oct. 30 E4/E6 Men's 70 873 posts | My point was to show when our game made its first Techno change. I am in total agreement, we need to do something to add a degree of safety to the game. As an infielder at 61 when I see the ball past me before I move I get a wee bit anxious. Knowing its only a matter of time before its hit at me at that same pace.
