Well used broken in Freak
I could use a little help with a problem I ran inot this weekend. I have a heavily used broken in Freak with a lot of pop to it right now. I HAVE NOT done anything to the bat except use it in batting practice and games. During a game a protest was issued and the UMP stopped play and reviewed the bat. After a lengthy delay the bat was allowed. My concern would be if my using the bat as designed could that cause the bat to be considered illegal. The bat is lively right now no question, it got that the old fashioned way I have the callouses to prove it. Am I swinging an illegal bat?

According to some that at one time were posting here, it probably would not pass the compression testing device. My personal opinion is that it should be ok, but thats just my opinion.

My opinion is it should be ok. I had a bat that was the same way. It would not pass a compression test if there was one. But the softball organization in question would send the bat back to the company for testing and would find out that it was legal. A lot of Miken bats get hotter when they break in. The sad part is soon after that they will start cracking and you have to send it to softball heaven. I would swing it and have fun doing it. let the other team put up the $350 and protest the bat you get $300 of it back to buy another bat.

This is the problem. The USSSA 1.20 test is bogus. Once the bat is broke in it no longer will pass their current compression test. Why one might ask? Will it is simple. The U2 passed the compression test at 215 pounds but since USSSA has the setting now at 230 to 245 then once the bat has 200+ swings it will no longer pass the test.

But because nothing but new bats will pass the compression test I guess everything will be protested from now on. Once again I would like to thank the associations for messing this up. One wonders why the compression test is not set a 215 since this equates to 1.20? But then if you have to buy a new bat all the time then one does not really wonder.
It is not fair to the players and what else is new now in softball. If someone hits a ball better than the other team thinks they should then a protest is made. Un-warranted as it may be it still will be made. Can't be that the player is good or the bat is legal but broke in. No today it has to be altered. My stock Synergy Extended was checked last weekend. But the protest went no place once the umpire looked at the bat and saw the ASA 2004 stamp. So why was the bat protested? I hit a home run. The new wave of softball.

Maddog I can understand why they protested the bat. To see that ball leave the park was an rare event. I heard last weekend in the 55 Major Plus division in Palm Springs there were only 2 home runs hit the whole weekend. Using that ball could hurt the numbers for the SSWS worlds.

Looks like the regional rule effectively did what it was intended to do and that was retire me and others. Spa in not following TH rule on allowing guys like me to play AAA and that goes for the other guys also.

So in the end I may only get to play in one world because of the above mention problem with the balls my major plus team is not going to the SSWS (other reasons also) and thus that leaves the SSWC AAA world for me. Which may not happen either. Why take one guy to one world when the team is playing in three? Of course the other two associations are not allowing me to play AAA so I am done. Which is what I said would happen long ago but was told it would not.

As far as the bats go I really hope the seniors associations do not fall into this trap. I am not a lawyer but it would seem to me that if a bat that is tested by the compression machine and passes the test for 1.20 but is not allowed because the numbers are set above that then a law suit would follow. JMHO

Not that I am for suing at a drop of a hat but then again I don't think ball players should be forced to buy new bats before each and every world that uses this machine.

WALK: In P.S., there was only 2 H.R.'s hit by 1 player. Both were hit in the early morning & there was some wind. Several 55 M.PLUS teams were @ this SSWC event. As I understand from several M. PLUS Vegas players, their team score 10 plus runs in only 1 game. The other 6-7 games the scores were 6-3, 9-6, etc. (Bad balls & poor scheduling.)
