This is for supporters of this idea: if you feel that all Senior Softball would be a better run organization with less controversy & less chances of rigged rosters: add your first name to this post. Do you feel that a Driver's Licence should determine a player's place of residence & that it should be presented with the association's card (if rewuired) at all tourneys?

Nope, no good. It's too easy to use any address or post office box,,,,,,,how about a telephone bill, utility bill or a copy of your income tax returns,,,,heck, why don't they just let us play where we want!

With today's technology of word processors and scanners all documentation can be falsified. The penalty should be strong enough to deter abuse.

A Snowbird list should be posted and all managers should have the right to challenge a so called snowbird.
This would be an extreme for most but i have hired a detective to investigate a certain bat doctor from the east coast surrounding the use of altered bats last year and the results were positive.
The same could be done if you truly suspect an illegal snowbird but the leg work has to be done in advance not after the fact.
It is too easy to falsify documentation these days.
What we should press for and it is something that these senior softball guys dont seem to want to give even to Gary Tryhorn who is Vice President of the SPA is a complete list of who has filed to be a snowbird. Have a shutoff date each year so no late snowbirds can just seem to show up.
IMO
Thanks

Bruce: it goes back to the old saying; locks are put on doors because of law breakers. You do not have to put a lock on a car, store or bank because of righteous people. A falsified DL could get someone in hot water. I am with you & most other Seniors; when someone falsifies a document, the penalty should be very severe.

Here is an update: after talking with a Director, the snowbird rule may not get rescinded against my wishes, but we can still change the rules. If a snowbird rule continues to exist after the Senior Summit, a player must have the following:

1. Credit Card Receipts from that area for gas, lodging, food or materials if they are working there. I am going to push for 6 months+ residency.
2. Also, show that he owns or leases the property.
3. Also, a copy of this info should be in his ball bag or in his possession at ALL tourneys.

If you have any more suggestions, please list them. I plan to get all info possible & bombard the summit. The snowbird rule has too many loopholes & they need to be tied into a huge knot. Remember: this is our game & only we can make the changes.

How about a PG+E bill for consecutive months along with a lease or mortgage document which shows you actually rent or are buying the property that they claim to live at??
Too many loopholes with credit card usage.
And a valid drivers liscense that has the properties address on it.

Update as of now i still have not heard from SSUSA or SPA to my request for a 50 major plus snowbird list so i can check said snowbirds in advance of the event.
Being the supreme rulers that they think they are, it does not look like they will give me the fair chance to look into to either prove or disprove a snowbirds claim in my division.
Phase 2 of my request begins next week.
Thanks

Mike: in actuality a person does not even have to OWN property. I could go to Phoenix & hang with my friends for 3 months & claim a snowbird rule. This rule seems to have been passed on when organizations changed hands & me & others have stirred up enough stink about it, that it is getting national attention & they plan to put a new phase to the snowbird rule by the next summit.
I think even now since the stink has been stirred up that it would be very difficult for someone to get a snowbird status. The rule should also indicate that a snowbirder's name & info as you requested should be sent to ALL managers as soon as it is filed, then people who know the individual could give some insight if the info was faulty.

That is part of the problem of how easy ot os to manipulate the current so called snowbird rule.
I know of 2 guys from 3 years ago who claimed a ca. address and 1 lived in or. the other in az. and simply used the same address as a player on the team like they were room mates.
This was on a AAA team in 2002,
To do this right, a lot more eveidence would have to be supplied to ensure all the other teams that it is legit.
1. 6 month resindence with a house or apt. either on a mortgage or lease in your name.
Active PG+E bills for those months in the snowbirds name showing someone actually lived there. It is simple to get PG+E in your name unless they first checked up on the person.

Do you know of any 50+ teams using fl. or ga. players outside of there borders anywhere else in the us. north, east, so. or west???
Please advise.
Thanks

Mike: I do not know of any. I have been playing since 99; I never thought guys would cheat or twist the rules at this age, but I am learning not to be so naive. I try to believe the best in people until I am proven otherwise; then I try to leave room for them to seek forgiveness.

This is a good idea. I know that drivers license can be forged, but if they are caught they would be banned from Senior Softball no exceptions. This would give them something to think about. Some people will try to win at all costs. They have to prove something to their sponsors. That hurts the little man who has to pay for everything. Good idea.

guys i think the DL is not a satisfactory answer niether,i personally have 2 DL's that are legit.doesn't take much to get one nowadays.i think u need to have people pick a state and that will be it.not sure how to do this,or just open up the borders for the upper divs(major+)

All the suggestion are great, however what you are suggesting takes time and time is money. In my other life my company logo was (our most important product is people) and what we did was to use our people to track, status, count, revise etc paper ideas and what is being dicussed here sounds like the kind of work I did. It take time and money. Now the associations will increase the fees to off set this. (NEXT SUGGESTION)

There are always ways around any rules if someone wants to bend them. All the suggestions that have been given can easily be subverted. The only way to stop abuse of the snowbird rule is to eliminate it entirely. The question then surfaces is whether or not we are eliminating someone's chance to play senior softball. Cheaters are cheaters. We shouldn't eliminate an honest player just because someone else is cheating. By the way, even without the snowbird rule a player can play for different teams in different states...legally. For example, a player who lives in Tennessee could play for a team in Missouri in SPA and a team in Georgia in SSUSA and another team in ISSA in North Carolina...all quite legally...due to the adjacent states rule (he has 9 states to choose from).
