Oct. 18 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Terrific time in the Valley of the Sun this year where Fran said SSUSA set a record for number of teams with well over 300. Congratulations Terry, Dave, Fran. I heard it will be in Phoenix next year, too. And well done to Tim Reed, Old Mike and the rest of the umps and supporters for a great job in hot, tiring conditions. The fields were in great shape, concession stands, too with knock-out young girls who were as courteous and efficient as they were gorgeous. I met guys from teams from Louisiana and Canada who said they were having a ball and said they will come back next year, too. Congratulations to GSF who bettered us in the finals for the 60 major plus crown. Way to go Conway, Freddie, Danny, Ron D, Corkey, Alvin and the rest for being the best version of GSF we'd seen all year. Congratulations to Woody, Bob Woodward of GSF who needs now introduction and Jim Stapleton of MTC for being inducted into the senior softball Hall of Fame and Jimmy for his gracious if lengthy acceptance speech that required to intermissions to complete. Way to go Jimmy for well deserved recognition of your dedication and value to all the teams you've helped win championships. Though we lost by one in the finals to GSF we never would have gotten close without the monster hitting of Hall of Famer, Steve Imlay who was hitting everything thrown at him 350 plus all day Sunday. Way to go, Steve. Almost lastly, for now, we used a ball in the first bracket game against GSF that both teams found much less than desirable. For some reason, the 44x375 balls we hit felt soft to the touch yet bounced high when thrown down against a hard infield. Perhaps these balls got somehow crossed with 52x275 balls was my initial reaction because those high core low compression balls will bounce well in the heat but not go very far/fast. For the rest of the games the 44 x 375 ball Stote Ball we used was good to very good even with the heat. It's hard to say why those balls in that particular game were so dissatisfying but on the whole the balls were good. Lastly for now, on the back of how much crap we been hearing from some about how the lively balls and bats of today are fundamentally dissatisfying, inhumanly dangerous and gaudy in effect how does SSUSA setting a record for attendance in Phoenix support their labored assertions? NOT. Not at all. Lively bats and balls forever. |
Oct. 18 E4/E6 Men's 70 873 posts | We found the same to be true in the 60AAA division too. Great teams with great players who love to play. I have to give a personal thank you to The Ga/Al Masters for your prayer and well wishes. They have been taken to heart! Joe I am quite sure there are several more reasons we had 300+ teams and some 10000 players for this years Worlds. With the balls and bats being somewhere far down on the list. I for one received more then one glaring look from pitchers as I hit errant balls literally buzzing past there ears. And heard a couple of 3rd basemen make remarks about being able to hear the ball before seeing it as it went past them. Thankfully no one was hit by anything I hit. Admittedly it is more fun hitting a rock then a sock. |
Oct. 18 Omar Khayyam 1357 posts | Sounds like the Phoenix Worlds are very successful with more than 300 teams! Einstein rightfully praises SSUSA leaders “Terry, Dave, Fran”, “the umps”, “fields in great shape”, “concession stands...with [gorgeous] girls”, etc. Then he amazingly ignores his earlier praises and gives all the credit to...you guessed it, “lively balls and bats”! NOT. |

Oct. 18 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | E4/E6,just maybe b/c its almost like a monopoly, where else would you go.they basically have only 3 big shindigs a year(ssusa, spa, huntsmans),there others are,but way smaller in team numbers compare to these 3. |
Oct. 18 400 Men's 50 90 posts | Finally weather cooperated a little and Phoenix does a fantastic job of taking care of the fields. Kinda hard to beat the weather and with a city of 3 million that feels much smaller...perfect mix! |
Oct. 18 400 Men's 50 90 posts | Congrats OTD on your success! |
Oct. 19 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | I forgot to mention Jack the photographer who's smiling face has become part of the fabric of big SSUSA events. A great guy who takes great actions shots which I use for my desktop and to impress and stay in touch with family and friends. I always like pictures better than words. Go to JACKTACK@aol.com, find yourself and get some great shots for yourself and the grand kids. And thanks again to my favorite friends and adversaries, Omen who used to be the Old A's from NorCal. A/C, Gary T, Otis, Elwin, Robo, Jimmy H, Johnny D, Hank and the rest for playing at such a high level for so long and reminding all of that as old as we are we still, "play to win the game", lest anyone forget. Great game, A/C, against AMR in the sun. |
