Discussion: Las Vegas Fields and Umpires

Thank you Staff for your response and the information provided. It is refreshing to know that the "members" have this opportunity to be heard. However, my comment on this post was more directed to the players that any suggestions or ideas that they think important enough to discuss would carry more impact coming from a group instead of individually--similiar to the Exec board or SSUSA committee. I know that each player has his, or her, ideas on solutions for some of the problems mentioned above, but not everyone is able to attend these conferences nor do most "members" feel as if it would do any good. During open sessions, individuals may not address many of the issues that concern the majority of the players or would only pertain to certain areas. I, myself, would have a difficult time making this Conference, but I could definitely pass on any helpful ideas I had for making this organization grow and become better than it is now. From what I have heard and participated in, there are many problems that need attention--and since you took the time to reply to this thread, I can only feel it is because you have the same desire to make SS better than the other organizations available to us "members".

Discussion: Las Vegas Fields and Umpires

As a still new member to SS, I read through these posts to learn more about the rules, play and locations around the country. What I read (esp in this thread) disturbs me and since I have not experienced Vegas, I have to ask questions. Many of you have the same feelings and great ideas for changes or improvements for this venue. Has anyone considered forming a committee to sit with SSUSA to discuss these ideas and offer solutions that would benefit players and SSUSA? I see several of the same people post on this site so I am sure this committee could be affective. Surely SSUSA would be open to the idea of a meeting with a group instead of individuals that want to make this sport the best it can be. Of course it will require players from different parts of the country and opinions from many, but I feel it could be done. Just my 2 cents....

Pitcher I am from Paducah also. If you should happen to pick up with a team and they need another, let me know. Maybe we could ride together to share cost. I play in 50s. Good luck

Here it is almost July and most teams have an established team by now. If your squad is in need of an extra player for a tourny or to finish the year, I might be able to help. Have not played this year but have my SSUSA card and can get SPA card also. I am a solid infielder(any pos) and can be counted on to show up! Would like the chance to be a part. 270-519-0173 (Kentucky)..call or text if you want to talk. Thanks Curt

I am still looking to play this season on a tourny team (age 52). I usually play infield positions and hit for avg-not power. Hope I can fill that spot for someone. Thanks..Curt 270-519-0173 or hoopman37@yahoo.com

Discussion: rotator cuff rehab

missouridave..has your doctor or PT said when you can start throwing overhand?? My PT started me at 8 weeks with a light weight ball into a screen just to get my shoulder used to that motion. I am now at 15 wks and am throwing very well playing catch. My arm strength is still about 75% but I can throw from first to second with good velocity. Just takes me a while longer to warm up than b4. I went to the surgeon yesterday and he released me (unless I feel I need to see him) and also the PT. I am doing home rehab and also at the gym and he was good with this. Good luck continuing with yours sir.

Discussion: 1-1 count no extra foul tourney

Wow, this thread sure took an UGLY turn from what it started as. As with other observations mentioned, only a limited number of players have replied and given their opinions-for or against. More might have done this if it the comments had not gotten so personal. Even so, it is difficult to know how the "majority" feels if so few express their voices. Lots of suggestions have come from MANY years of experience--mostly good ones. As seniors, we tend to enjoy things being stable and little change, but as players we need to realize that won't happen. I am new to SS but have been playing tourny and league ball for over 30 years and have seen the game change constantly. The issue of 1-1 will not be going away.. whether we accept this and play is our choice. We will never agree with all the rules. Most tournaments I play in use 1-1 w/ a courtesy which I do like. As was mentioned, how many times does a player watch more than 2-3 pitches before swinging- unless the pitcher can't find the plate? 1-1 is only part of the answer for speeding the games.. the others were mentioned as well. But if we as players want as many AB's each game, each wkd we have to do our part to help. One idea has not been mentioned yet-and I HOPE it never happens--is a 1 pitch. But, if you want more AB's, there ya go!! ALL associations want more money, more teams, less game times, and quicker tournys but the players should be the ones getting the benefits. So, agree or disagree, talk to your teammates and encourage them to voice their thoughts each time SS wants our help in deciding how great we can make this game become!!!!!!

Discussion: Looking for a new team for the 2013 season

I live in western KY and am looking for a tournament team for this season. Last year was my first playing senior ball (I am 52y/o)and I was able to make one tourny. The team I played with no longer plays together so I am searching for another. I play infield and pitch with other teams I play on and hit for a good avg. Would like the chance to help make your team better. Contact me by phone at 270-519-0173 or email at hoopman37@yahoo.com

Discussion: place best hitters last strategy

You are right HJ that the game ends w an out but that doesn't mean it is the last 2 or 3 in the lineup. I agree w your OBP comment though...I didn't define weak hitter because they are what this thread is about. How many teams have you played on that single hitters were not as "recruited" or thought of as power hitters? I personally would rather have a team of basehitters with a good BA and OBP.

Discussion: place best hitters last strategy

There are sev good points made and a few not so good. Are we not talking about slow pitch softball and most of us believe that you should be able to hit ANYWHERE in the lineup? One comment was the lower batters had 20-25 fewer at bats..does this mean that the others were making outs before they could get their ABs in? If a team has 8-9 strong hitters, then why even bat more than 10--you should be able to win almost every game. If you bat more than 10, why not scatter the "weak" batters(2) between them instead of taking 2 useless outs before you get to lead-off? BTW-I hit for a good avg and prefer to be 10th or 11th.

Discussion: rotator cuff rehab

Thank you Rainman for the insight. I also had almost exactly the same as Dave and am in week #10 after surgery. I had a checkup with surgeon on Friday(11th) and got a great report. I went to rehab that afternoon and he was pleased too. I am down to rehab 1x/week now and actually was able to play basketball this afternoon. Still have a ways to go but I will be ready for softball by March. Good luck to you all.

Discussion: What does it take to be a Major player?

I believe this needs to be broken down even more. The term "major" should not include the upper age groups(ex. 65-75 ages)because at this stage, nearly all the players play at the same level. There are somme exceptions, but not enough to class major. I agree there are many, many quality players all over that are gifted enough to be called Major, but to use 5 tools is not accurate. Do these players also have to be "giants" or ex-MLB players? I believe the best way to classify a major player would be... does he hurt a team by playing "average" defense; does he know how to hit in any situation (including sac fly, walking, etc.); does he think base running means one base-at-a-time or evrything you can get without being thrown out; would you rather have a player that can hit 2-4 w 2hr or one that is 4-4 w 4 singles? Knowledge and desire to be perfect along with the LOVE OF THE GAME can never be replaced with any tools. Major players should excel in ALL areas of the game----not just a few.

Discussion: Did they win or did we lose?

I tend not to respond to most posts but I think this is a very good topic. Having played with many young players and watching their attitudes and hearing the excuses, I try to encourage them as well as bring out the strong points. Very seldom in any game does a team play flawless ball on either side(offense or defense). But I feel that defense is probably more important than offense but that only applies if the arrogance is in check. Most young players think that is what they are needed for--their bats. If a team makes all the plays though, knows when to hit the cut-off, allows no ex bases then the only way to be beat is perfect hitting--and we NEVER bat 1000!!! Excuses?? LOL not that game....But we don't live in that fairyland now do we?? Might be something to strive for.
