Discussion: Screen to protect the pitcher

Using a protective screen during the course of the game does conjure up other interesting questions on it’s use and overall viability for being a solution to pitcher safety. Obviously using the protective pitcher’s screen during bp is a no-brainer; but during the course of a live game it can get in the way of the real action for sure.

I would suggest the following:

1. If the batter hits the screen (3) times in a particular at-bat then he’s OUT. Just like three strikes and you’re OUT…same kind of critical thinking. So for example, if a batter has two strikes on him then either a batter ball into foul territory or his third batted ball in the pitchers safety screen would result in the batter being retired for that time at-bat only and he’s free to bat again in the game with no penalty.

2. I would think that if the clock is running in the game then the umpire should stop the clock after each batted ball into the screen and restarted with the ump raises his hand for the play to commence again as without this rule valuable actual playing time could be squandered.

3. As far as the screen becoming an obstacle during live ball action, I would recommend SSUSA hire off-duty tennis ball-boys and girls for that matter, who would be hunkered down in the dugout door and when the ball is hit to the outfield they quickly run out and grab the screen and drag it into foul territory and then replace it when the umpire calls TIME!

4. The ball-guys would be paid minimum wage only to keep the tournament costs down. However here in Washington State we have the highest minimum wage pay of any of the 50 states so that may be an unfair cost burden to our Evergreen State!

Hey Joe! It’s your buddy Bash from Seattle, WA! You indicated in your post that the “Mello Yellow” Rip-iT is out of production… and Yes! I certainly did like the performance that you and Bogie got with the Rip up here in the (206) last September during the video ‘shoot”, while you guys were hitting some balls well over 400feet in the dense Seattle air…WOW!

If there are no-mo yeller ones, then that begs the question…what are the NEW colors going to be…do you know? If they have them please send me one RED and one BLUE 28oz brand spanking’ NEW Rips and complimentary of course, with PRE/PAID shipping charges when you get some in your hands and send them to my home address.

By the by…Karen and Jill say hello to you from the “Bikini Espresso” coffee stand in downtown Kent. They want to know if you’ll be staying, when you come up again, @ the same Hotel with the hot tub and open bar?

Thanks Joe, I owe ya big time!

Discussion: Seattle Mariner Fanfest Day!

For the past (10) or so years the Seattle Mariners baseball club has provided us fans with a fan fun day @ the ball park. We get to do things like go inside the locker rooms and sit in Ichiro’s dressing area, hit off a batting tee to center field, play catch in the outfield, run the bases, and pitch off the mounds in the bullpens with a radar gun estimating your pitch velocity.

Basically, with have the run of the place for an entire day. More than 10,000 fans attended the event along with Jenni Hogan of local TV station KOMO4 who was there promoting the event for her TV network. Jenni is also a very huge fan supported of Senior Softball in the Seattle area and will be bringing out a film crew to some of our local senior softball games. Jenni was born in Australia and attended the UofW here in Seattle and was the captain of the 2-time Women’s Crew Team in early 2000 time frame. She did interview with a postion with Softball 360 a few years back.

I do have a very short slide show of my brother and I (bashbro1 & bashbro2) along with Jenni playing with all the “kids” @ Safeco during the event.

Discussion: Significant Rule Changes for SSUSA 2008 Season!

Boys! First off, I would never post erroneous or purposefully misleading material to incite this board as I have the utmost respect for the guys and the opinions made here. I’ve been entrusted as the W.E. Ruth 60’s Communication Officer and that job has the inherent responsibly of maintaining personal integrity. I like to kid around just like the next guy but would it would be totally inappropriate here regarding the seriousness of subject matter.

I did returned to my sources and the rules changes are correct as posted. And yes to ‘taits’ question, in essence there were (2) meetings this month. The first last weekend was the meeting of the SSUSA 2008 advisory board members that drafted and ratified the new rule changes. These are rules changes pertain only to the SSUSA softball association The SSUSA advisory council is a group of (~10) or so hand picked SSUSA reps from around the country.

The meeting this weekend in PHX is the “Summit” of about (9) or so different softball associations that strive to make common between the associations whatever they can agree upon which is a difficult undertaking. The “Summit” has no real jurisdiction on what any of the individual softball associations choose to implement as their own rules. SSUSA allows us to have the bats we most desire to use, whereas some of the other esteemed associations like ASA, for example, would stand in the way of that as we all know.

Discussion: Significant Rule Changes for SSUSA 2008 Season!

I just received the following rules changes for 2008 from reliable sources here in the Pacific Northwest region that were taken away from the SSUSA meeting held last weekend and paraphrased here:

1. Plate mat will now be 2” inches bigger in width and length (nothing about thickness?)…now 19" by 36 1/2"…So now that the mat will be 2” wider and 2” deeper will mean a little more plate coverage for the hitter and bigger target for the pitcher obviously. There will be no white plate painted on the mat either—just a big fricken’ ugly old mat—The catcher will now be allowed to touch any part of it for a force play @ home, not just the plate as before—this rule applies to both the ISA and SSUSA associations.

2. Major Plus rule changes:

a. Home run rule - 50's 12 per game - 55's 10 per game - 60's 8 per game after limit has been reach then all subsequent HRs will be ruled “DEAD BALL OUTS”!

b. Runs per inning 7 (other divisions old rules apply)

3. Any batted-ball that strikes the pitcher on fly or the bounce will now be ruled immediately by the umpire as a “DEAD BALL OUT”…even if the pitcher is a crappy fielder period end of story. So, Joe (‘einstein’), if you get hit this year you can have the satisfaction that you “got the hitter out”! LOL

4. The current 5-runs given up to your opponent as a division equalizer will be allocated as follows:

1 run per inning starting in second, going through the sixth.
Example: If game only goes lets say 4 innings, the team giving will only be charged with 3 runs at that point in the game so you don’t put yourself in such a big hole at the start of the game.

I certainly welcome any and all legitimate corrections to my wording and paraphrasing of the above NEW rules of play.

Its done in the Miss USA Pageant!
Miss USA pageant rules state clearly that if the “winner” is removed or becomes unavailable for her duties during the course of the calendar year, then the first runner-up (i.e. “the whiner”) will assume the duties of Miss USA and complete the remainder of the beauty queen's reign.

A simple fictitious word substitution for Miss USA for SSUSA TOC:
For any and all SSUSA division champions eligible for the TOC tournament that can’t fulfill their role in the TOC in Winter haven, FL, the rules should clearly state that if the division winner” is unavailable for their TOC opportunity then the first runner-up (i.e. “the last loser”) will assume the duties of the champion and can complete in the TOC to ensure brackets are full.

Discussion: Why Composite Bats?

Hey there “Hit-duh-Gap”! How’s the weather over there in the “Inland Empire”? We’ve had nothing but lots of rain and cold for weeks here on the Westside of Washington State Cascade range and my swing is getting “rusty” and not just figuratively speaking either! LOL

Your remark in your post about “it’s the best damn balanced ASA bat I’ve every used” to me is about equivalent to me saying “it’s was the best safe sex I’ve every had”!! Both are less rewarding than the real thing if you know what I mean.

Revisiting my recent post above about handle stiffness and how it relates to the “trampoline” effect, I believe it’s “safe” to say that ASA bats, given the 98mph ceiling, would have their bats designed with flexible handles in order to quiet the bat down and reducing the ball-exit-speed.

ASA must keep their bats performing under the radar of 98mph BBS and if an ASA bat had a stiff handle you can bet your bottom dollar, that the barrel will have a reduced “trampoline” effect designed in thereby off-setting the advantage of a stiff handle IMHO.

STONEMAN: The ONE the ONLY! Very interesting stuff about the proposed NEW balls “hitting” the market with a higher COR(coefficient Of Restitution) and then couple with a lower compression to control distance. Excellent info and the physics make sense. The higher the COR the more the call will bounce off the barrell and the lower the hardness the less the ball will compress the barrel yielding a lower “tram;” effect.

Regrading your remark about “some serious head damage”…I’ve been hit in the head several times but obviously I’m ok???

How about STONEMAN PhD?

Discussion: Why Composite Bats?

I just had a chat with aero-space Composite Materials engineer and found out that composite material can be made to be stronger than steel and lighter than aluminum which is public knowledge and not proprietary info. These new materials have a distinct advantage over the former aluminum alloys in that composites have a characteristic called…get this now- “anisotropic” properties. This means that the composite material has elastic properties that are NOT all lined-up in the same linear directions as other materials like aluminum and titanium that can’t be altered.

Commercial airplanes for example, until just recently were always made out of aluminum/titanium, but with the composite wing they can now make it stiff where it needs to be stiff and more flexible in other areas so they don’t break during flight (a good thing) along with the aircraft being more fuel efficient.

These multi-directional properties allows bat engineers to alter the fibers weave angle and direction so that they can fine tune a bat that is stiff in handle with a corresponding softer barrel to yield a greater “trampoline” effect.

Understand that a stiff handle is necessary to allow for more compression of the barrel when the ball collides with it yielding a larger trampoline effect. If the bat handle allows a lot of bat flex then the barrel will not compress as much which gives us seniors to 30-40 extra feet further on our long fly’s compared to say aluminum C405!

Also, the thickness of the bat fiber-walls is not the only factor that determines the level of trampoline effect as you can “dumb down” a bat’s performance by altering the composites lay-up-process by the directional vectors of the material.

Perfomrance:
As we know, one sure way to increase the performance of a bat is to enhance what is known as the trampoline effect of the barrel. The barrel of the bat essentially acts as a spring board during the bat-ball collision. If the barrel spring is very stiff, then the ball compresses a great deal upon impact and loses a significant amount of energy thereby losing it’s shape and aero-dynamic flight characteristics in the process of compression and re-expansion of the bat barrel.

So, if the barrel of the bat is made to be softer, then the barrel compresses more, the ball compresses less, and the ball loses less energy during the collision and ‘fly’s’ further. Furthermore, the energy which was temporarily stored in the barrel spring board is returned to the ball (i.e. composite material has high memory) and the batter-ball speed is greatly increased after the collision.

By the bat engineers adjusting the stiffness of the barrel, a manufacturer is able to "fine-tune" the trampoline effect of a bat to increase or decrease performance as desired for(e.g. ASA/SSUSA/USSSA/NSA). Composite materials provide a manufacturer with a very wide range of possibilities to design a bat to a targeted performance and/or feel and that’s why the composite bats are the “bats of choice” in senior softball.

Bashbro1(W.E. Ruth 60’s Kent, WA Major+)

Definitions from Dictionary Dot Com:

Anisotropic: Means that it’s differing in all directions according to orientation, as light scattered by a liquid crystal.

Isotropic: Means that it’s identical in all directions; invariant with respect to direction.

Hey Mango! It’s you buddy bashbro1. I haven’t seen you since I believe when you caught me at the Phoenix airport (Worlds) walking by and you were in the bar with your 40 year old buddies celebrating wildly with a championship surrounded by a gaggle of HOT chicks!

Hey, I’m a “catcher” too and a good one if I don't say so myself. However, since I make no tag plays @ home plate, and rarely can any outfielder throw that far with any accuracy, I don’t have to catch the ball cleanly and normally the pitcher can’t see my signals from 50’ away…. so I say we should be ineligible for an Defensive all-star recognition.

Furthermore, I recommend that we let the “freaking” SSUSA umpire catch and move the catcher to say a “short fielder” position (I qualify cause I’m short) thereby adding a 10th defender to the defense and I think Joe einstein would like that as well. With the ump now being responsible for the catching duties maybe he can see the stupid mat better! LOL
