The Rockin’ Reno tournament concluded this past weekend, can anyone share some unofficial results in the various brackets? I always lock my bat bag using the plastic "ty-wraps" ...just loop them through the zipper tabs...if security wants to check, they simply cut them open...this also let's you know if someone has opened you bag!! You can buy a small bag of these for cheap at the local hardware store! It's cheaper than a small lock which is worthless anyway!! Note: Don't forget that YOU'LL need to open them after you reach your destination...if you bring a knife with you, you'll get it confiscated! I usually put a small pocket knife or nail-clippers in an outside pocket of my bat bag or luggage, that way I'll have something to cut these with when I pick up my bags. Rich |

This demonstrates how important it is to know your rules!! We played a game in the Calif Cup where the opposing pitcher deliberately walked a batter with two outs to get to a vacant spot in the batting order (because a player was ejected) for an automatic out (3rd out)...we had no subs 'cus we were batting everyone. some associations don't allow you to walk a player (with 2 outs) to get to the vacant spot for the 3rd out and we were not sure if that was allowed and are still unsure of the rule! | Oct. 22, 2007 Hacker | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: You make the call - umpire gets over-ruled by TD in Phoenix Interesting ruling…how do you think this should have been called? Situation: elimination game - 60AAA - Papago Park: Game score is tied…visiting team did not score in the top-half of extra inning, the home team is coming to bat in the bottom-half of the extra inning and is supposed to start the inning with a runner placed at second base (last batter from previous inning) per the tie-breaker rule. Before the inning starts, the home team wants to use a courtesy-runner to replace the runner on second, however, there is much dispute among the home team players as to whether it is allowed, so to be on the safe side and before they allow the courtesy runner to even touch second base, they ask the umpire…he is uncertain but after much discussion, he allows the courtesy runner to replace the original runner on second. The visiting team immediately disputes the umpire’s ruling and seeks the tournament director’s decision…the TD over-rules the umpire and calls the courtesy runner out before the inning even starts!! Although the ruling is correct to not allow a courtesy runner until the runner reaches third base, do you think it was the right call that the courtesy runner is out after the umpire incorrectly allowed it? The home team had to start the inning with no runner at second and 1 out! How would you make the call? Rich |

I remember back in the late 90’s when Demarini came out with there new Double Wall Distance, they soon became the leader and had all of the other mfrs scrambling to catch up. As a result, a variety of new alloy’s & designs hit the market. Also note that the balls used back then were not as controlled as today’s balls and there were some very hot balls used with these new alloys. The 1997 Demarini Doublewall Distance is one of the few “holy grails” of softball bats. This bat was not known for its durability (dented easily) but is one of the hottest bats of all time. In 2003 Demarini re-introduced the “Classic” Double-wall Distance but it never had the “pop” of the original 1997. In 1998 Worth introduced the SUPERCELL “EST” One of the best overall bats in history. The 1998 Worth EST line combined excellent durability with great performance…I still see this bat used in tournaments where the ULTRA is not allowed. In 2000 the first WORTH PST introduced was the Powder Shell Technology version (red) and some argue that it was the hottest PST ever. Later in 2001 WORTH followed up with the PST Vanadium (blue) which featured WS137 alloy, the highest strength alloy available, it came with a 2-yr warranty and could be used in 45 degree weather…it was the most durable bat available (and most expensive) but did not have the “pop” of it’s predecessor. In 2000 Easton's introduced the CONNEXION ST1-Z it featured a two-piece design using an elastomer connector to mechanically interlock the handle to the barrel, allowing the two pieces to act independently for no vibration and a larger sweet spot than any other bat design. It had a super-thin, Scandium-enhanced SC500 alloy wall for the highest strength and thinnest wall of any bat on the market. This bat had an extremely end-load swing weight feel and you really had to take a full swing to “flex” the handle. This bat became a very sought-after bat when ASA banned the composites. I sold mine for $250 (should have kept it). Being an outfielder, I remember when the Miken Ultra (grey) was first introduced. I could not believe how deep I had to play (especially with no fence). I did not know how to defend against it…If I played normal depth, I would now get burned by almost everybody in the line-up, if I played deep, then normal singles would become doubles. We had to have the catcher announce (shout) when a batter was using a “Miken”. Although the best alloy bats of the 90’s were extremely hot for their time, I don’t believe they were as hot as the composites of today, especially the ULTRA II…which some would argue the hottest bat of all time…virtually the same as the grey Ultra without the endload. | July 26, 2005 Hacker | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Congrats SS-USA on Western Nationals Dave, coudn't agree with you more...especially about the field prep after the rain. When I went to the Russell Road complex on Friday morning and saw the infield under an inch of water...I thought no way are we playing today and it looked as if Sat was in jepordy as well...boy was I amazed when I received a call that the games are scheduled for 2PM and to find the fields in very good condition blew me away!! Great job to the field crew!! As far as elgibility problems...we had an incident in the Championship game where a new player who hadn't played in the previous round-robin or seeding rounds mysteriously showed up for the championship then disappeared after they won. Fortunately it was our 1st loss and we won the next game...whew! |

Congratulations to the Black Hawks of Modesto, CA, winners of the 2005 Western National Championship held in sunny Seattle, WA. The scrappy Black Hawks won their way into the championship game having lost only 1 game during the first day of the round-robin competition , but then lost a close game (11-8) against the tough Vancouver USA team. A final game was forced with either team facing eliminationÖbut the determined Black Hawks rose to the occasion and were crowned Western National Champions! Great city, great tournament, great weather, and great competition! |
