Discussion: Balls/Bats/Format

Due to some recent unpleasent tournament experiences I'd like to make a strong recommendation: that it be madatory for all tournament directors to declare the following facts on thier registration forms; 1) the manufacturer, core and compression of the balls being used, 2) the bat standards being used and 3) the format being used i.e. how many round robin games and if the championship round is sinlge or double elimination. I believe that teams should have this information PRIOR to sending in thier registration fee and making travel plans. A lousy ball (yellow red stiched Diamond 44/375 or any lower comp/compression ball), ASA bat standards, less than a 5 game guarentee and a single elimination Championship round are all reasons to NOT participate in a tournament in my humble opinion.

I respectfully request your prayers for the wife of one of our teamates who is just beginning her 3rd bout with Cancer. She has won twice before and with our help she will win again! Thanks!

Kudos to you Terry! Now if you'll fix the "geographic restriction" guidelines instituted this year you will have set a standard for all Senior organizations to achieve or they will face declining participation in their tournaments.

Crusher, with all due respect if there isn't any difference in the balls then why make a different ball?

Discussion: SO CAL HAS LOST A TRUE LEGEND

When I recieved the news of Don's passing yesterday I was stunned and emotionally devastated! I had played against him for many years but last year I had the great pleasure of being his teamate for the entire year on the Sin Sity Sixties. He was an outstanding softball player and a great person to be around.

His love for his wonderful wife and kids was very obvious. The last time we played together he told me that last year was the most enjoyable he had ever experienced and that he was looking forward to doing it again in 2005. Unfortunately the new rules isolating California prevented that from happening.

I miss him already and pray that God will give his family strength and keep him by His side. He was a very special person who will be remembered fondly by many, many people.

It is my understanding that the SPA has switched to a .47/500 ball which is new from Worth, claiming that the .47/525 ball is no longer being made by Worth.

If true that will be a significant change in the Texas heat in July.

Discussion: When all is said and done...

I'm sure you are both fine men, but your resignation to the will of Terry, Ridge and RB and the ASA and other "leaders" of Senior softball is precisely why they will never listen to us.

Because despite all our protestations and how right we may be, our desire to play is greater than thier desire to listen to us or allow us to to influence what they percieve to be rules that are"in the best interest of the game" no matter how unfair or unjustified they may be!

Our only weapon is boycotting thier tournaments and we will never be committed or unified enough to do it to the extent necessary to get thier attention.

It's a shame but it truly is play by thier rules or stay home!

William Wallace, tell me your kidding. There is no chance that the ASA bat standard will be unilaterally accepted by Senior Softball, right!? Say it isn't so!

Discussion: Ultra II Beyond 2005

I have lost faith in the fact that anyone in power gives a rat's rear end what the players think anymore, but for what it's worth and to no one's surprise I strongly support the continued use of the Ultra II, regardless of the core/compression of the ball. Anyone who still thinks the banning of the Ultra was EVER about safety is delusional.

At this time it is legal and will be legal in 2005 in all Associations except ASA.

Discussion: Rolling for distance

There is a lot of nonsense on this subject all of which will go away if they just "married" the 44/375 ball with the Ultra II (for seniors)like the SSUSA. No need for Bat testing machines, confiscations, altered, shaved, end loaded, painted, rolled, hammered, etc....bats.

The Associations created a "Monster" by banning the Ultra II in the form of numerous new "bat doctors". In fact the Ultra II put the few who did exist at the time all but out of buisness. Now we are forced to devise inane ways to "protect the integrity" of the game all because the governing bodies of softball percieve the Ultra II to be less safe in other orgaizations than it is in SSUSA!

One final point in response to Joncon, to have your bat taken from you during a tournament and imply that you are "guilty" of something "illegal" is tanamount to "defamantion of character" and "slander". If the bat turns out to be "legal" a lawsuit for those reasons is indeed in order. I have already checked it out and have a signed statement from an attorney as to it's validity.

I would like to send my condolences to Mike's family. I got to know Mike by playing against him in many World tournaments. He was indeed a "class" act, a extraordinary ball player and a true gentlemen. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.

Discussion: Approaches to weight training

I forgot to add what I feel is an important point. The biggest mistake I see in the gym is the failure to perform complete extension and contration of the muscles being worked. Failure to do so will affect the "elasticity" of the muscle. This is the "muscle bound" effect attributed to Bodybuilders and in most people it will negatively impact performance in their chosen sport.

DMac thanks for the positive comment.

Discussion: Approaches to weight training

The best approach in my opinion is to use "Basic" exercises involving the major muscle groups of the body, rather than "isolation" execises. Examples would be: Bench Presses, Squats or Leg Presses, Behind Neck Presses, Bent Over Rows or Lat Pulls, Dips, etc. The muscle areas that can make the biggest differences in your swing to generate "power" is wrists, forearms ,triceps, hips and legs. Many people spend too much time on thier "biceps" that is better spent on the aforementioned muscles. Warm up each muscle group throughly and use "pyramiding" sets and reps i.e. add weight as you decrease reps. A favorite set/rep scheme of mine is 15,12,9,6, 3. Weight training has been proven beneficial at all ages and will improve performance in almost any sport.

Just remember at our age it takes longer to recuperate so take at least 48 hour between workouts.

For the record I was a competive Powerlifter for many years and a certified "Nautilis" instructer. I still tran with weights at least 3 times a week and always will.

I would also like to pass on my condolences to E.G.'s family and friends. I played against his teams on many occasions and enjoyed his competitve spirit and knowledge of softball.

A "unique" individual to say the least. I know he'll be missed by all who knew him in our "special" world of Senior Softball.

Discussion: Las Vegas Winter Nationals

Just participated in the Winter Nationals in Las Vegas in 60 Majors. All games on time, good umpires, fields in good shape, very cold weather especially Sat. morning. Miken Ultra II's and 1st batch Synergy's allowed, .44-.375 Trump Stote ball was used. .Balls and Bats were a perfect match. Fair amount of Home Runs were hit. No injuries I am aware of. Other Associations should take notice and adopt the SSUSA bat and ball standards and all the controversy will just go away and we all can "just play ball".
