Discussion: Has Anyone Tracked Where The Offensive Team Hits The ball

Hum! I plan on tracking where every ball is hit against us and ever ball we hit in the Spring Nationals coming up in about 10 days in Lakeland, Florida. Hopefully, it will be revealing. Pork, look forward to seeing ya in maui in May. You guys need to take it easy on us!

Has anyone tracked consistently where the other team hits the ball or where your team hits. if so could you share that information for discussions purposes and the class of ball.

What I am asking is in a typical game how many shots go to the pitcher, to first, to second, etc. In our play we see the most outfield shots to left and the most infield shots to third and short. However, that is based on my recall and I would like some concrete evidence before the season really gets rolling. You input is appreciated.

Well, it broke apart tonight on the 47th swing. My new Cobat 30 ounce, end load which hit exceptionally well from the get go is no more. Temperature was 67 degree and no humidity with dry Trump Stote 375/44 balls. I believe i will try the short red barrel senior bat next!

Bob, interesting thoughts on the Vegas problems. I'll have to check as some flights might have already been purchased. I know we have already made motel reservations. Not sure about the ISA in St Louis. Last year we took the 50 team to that.

Honestly, Jim Truncel and I, who sponsor the team, were open to playing 9 tournaments. Three or four of our skilled players could not make but six so that is what we ended up with.

I hope Sportsplex from the northeast will post as they are an excellent team and we have had some great games with those "damn Yankees"! :)

Discussion: Our schedule for this year--Travelodge

Bob, I commend your publishing your schedule. Hopefully others will follow as well. We really want to play the best and have the most participation in every event. Out 55 major plus team is only playing 6 nationals as the team voted not to travel as much this year. The guys were pretty well worn out last year playing in about 9 national tournaments. Plus it is hard to get everybody on the same page with a bunch of tournaments and several times last year we ran out of gas with too few players. Most of us also play once a month in the Florida Half Century which is a state wide league and since Florida is spread out that creates a lot of traveling.

The team voted to play in Vegas the same week that the ASA is in North Carolina. Humm, Vegas or Burlington? Ultras or ASA bats? However, we look forward to playing the ToC champions in Tulsa and Phoenix!

Nope, never have rolled one other than throwing it to the dugout after flying out! We've got 2 new ones so we are going to keep a log on how many hits we take so that we are sure on the swing total.

Kevin, do you think living in Florida and having the trunk going to well over 130 degrees during the day, tends to weaken the bats by expanding and then contracting at night when pulled "from the oven" and therefore they have a tendancy to break? Maybe that coupled with the extra weight of the water from the humidity is just too much or am I "barking up the wrong tree"?

Discussion: CAN MAJOR PLAYERS PLAY WITH AAA OR AA ?

Well, I know Babe Ruth, and Bruce is definitely a player of major impact. He has probably the best pure swing that I have ever seen. If this guy ever gets on a weight lifting program he will need to be in a league by himself.

Kevin, both Curt and I hit basically 44/375 balls. He tends to break more bats than me. We hit about 100 balls, pick them up and hit again. Typically we hit two nights a week from 9:00 PM till 11:30 PM. The second round the balls are somewhat wet as the humidity in northeast Florida is high. Would this extra water weight be a factor in bat breakage? Remember, it is just the exterior of the ball that is wet as the balls are not soaked!

Typically, other than to break in a game bat, we use blue Mayhems or the red Jeff Hall bats as they tend to last for us about 300 to 500 swings. The Ultras break quickly and then the Combats are a little longer lasting.

Is there an end loaded bat that is comparable to a 30 ounce Combat that would be a good practice bat? Right now I really like the end load Combats as I am hitting them better than the Ultra. Thanks for any input.

Just got to hit with my new grey/silver senior combat 30oz end load and the bat hits real well. Then my brother, Curt, allowed me to use his brand new red senior combat, 28oz and it hit exceptionally well. Better than the grey. My last 3 grey Combats lasted about 100 swings each. We are hoping the shorter barrel will give the red more life.
Don Norquist hits with us and has had very good results with many swings and feels that the red bat will last for a good while. Time will tell as i think it depends on the hitters swing and bat speed to a big degree.

Discussion: Super Mjor Softball-The way the game was meant to be played

In 2007 we played the ISA National in Bridgeton, Mo. at the Bridgeton Sports Complex. The facilities were outstanding with 9 fields and an impressive concession stand. The ballpark was within minutes of the St. Louis airport and there were nearby motels and restaurants.

This location should be considered due to the above amenities and the central proximity.

Also, since we are taking this back to "real softball" are we doing away with the round robin games and just doing what we called, 2 & Q? That is, you lose 2 games and you head to the BBQ restaurant? I would be in favor of this and just flip for seating, etc. This would eliminate extended tournaments and reduce the overall roster size as you would not need as many players, runners, etc.

Jim, I like your idea! We have tried this before and got little to no response. However, count us in and how can we help you?

My thoughts on rules, which are not universally held, would be as follows to get the most participation.
1) Keep bordering sate rules with one pickup from anywhere. Nothing special about the Mississippi to me!
2) Unlimited home runs, unlimited runs per inning, and no time limit. Basically 2 hours per game would keep the schedule on time.
3) Keep pitching like it is, 6 to 12 feet. Again, this isn't about pitchers and many seniors do not play the faster pitched, flat belly ball.
4) Start the tournament on Friday night and wrap it up by noon on Sunday. This saves sponsors extra motel days, etc. and allows the players to travel on Friday morning and Sunday afternoon losing only one day of work.
5) Definitely has to be played at a hub city for convenient flights and hopefully within 20 miles of the airport.
6) Make the time of year in the same month that there are no other major associations having a national.
7) Get SS-USA to recognize points for Hall of Fame, etc.
8) Allow Ultras and .44/375 core balls with minimum 300' fences.

Now, having said this, you will soon realize that most players/managers/sponsors, sad to say, would rather win a tournament with 3 teams than compete in a tournament where 10 of the best in their division are and find out where they truely rate.

However, I'd admire you trying to do this and will do my best to bring a team to compete.

Mike/Paulie, We'll be at the ToC with the Hollis 55 at the Diamondplex. Unfortunately, Mike Walker's uncle died and he will not be there. Ed Rose will be there with the Raptors a 60 major plus team. Hope to see ya there.

Discussion: How to Start a Major/Major+ Circuit

Mike, Mike, Mike! I believe what most of us would prefer is the existing associations just using common sense and not make a homerun and out. We can work this thing out and keep the associations in business.

I agree, it would be a fun new circuit, but my experiences say that you can not get the committments from enough teams.

Therefore, lets work with the associations on some fair rules. I believe they are willing to listen and poll the major plus managers, etc.

Wagon, you missed my point and took offense at cheapest! So tell me, why are 50% of your hits up the middle? Is it because it is the hardest place to get a hit?

Discussion: 2008 National Senior Softball Summit

I believe USSSA has monitored what we are saying on this board and is re-thinking their rules. If safety is the issue than unlimited homeruns is the answer. Otherwise, the ball will go up the middle as it is the cheapest hit in softball.

If you love your pitcher than lobby for unlimited homeruns in the major plus division. I believe a majority also prefer unlimited runs per inning.

This and any other issue could simply be handled by sending a survey asking various questions to the managers of the major plus teams. These are the guys with the best feel for the game. Then publish their opinions and lets see where that takes us!

Discussion: hitting the pitcher

Gentlemen, perhaps down here in the south we are more hospitable to our fellow players, but, never in 5.5 years have I seen a middle war in senior ball. I played 24 tournaments last year and saw none. I've probably played 100 tournaments the last 5.5 years and have never seen more than two balls in a game hit at the pitcher and always then with an apology.

Is this really a problem out west? I know it is in flat belly ball in the south but by the time you are 50 some maturity should have set in!

Am I missing something here? Seems if two consecutive batters hit my pitcher than we call time, meet at the plate, see what the problem is, and then if we can not discuss it and get over it, it will be my 14 against your 14 winner take all. That should settle the hitting wars better DAMN quick!
