Discussion: Hitting

Great topic: Perl & Bruce are 2 players that I know & will state they are great hitters; I'd like to augment the replies above with what I have observed in softball (I started in 79) & this is the biggest problem that I have: watching the ball hit the bat.
I watch batters all the time & the ones that watch it all the way to the bat; whether low, medium or higher pitch; these batters catch the ball solid. they also know how to have a more linear swing when they are going for a base hit as opposed to a circular swing when swinging for the fences.
I think most will agree with me; 1/2" up or down contact with the ball can make a big difference in how far or how hard the ball goes.
My observance is that the consistent hitters watch the ball all the way in & make good contact.

Discussion: Batters Box

Taits: "Heck the batter has 40 inches to move in front of the plate, how much run up room does one need?" I have never seen this before!!! SPA in Pensy had about 8-10"!! There is some good input on this subject; but this is another question that should be put to the players in a Player Poll. I am talking it up with everyone that I know to push ALL associations for a PP. Hope it works.

Thanks for the input!!

At Pensacola: I witnessed 2 guys (not on my team) that got called out for stepping out of the front of the box; I have not seen this called since I started in 1999. If you're going to start calling the plate as a strike when you enter Senior Softball; then there has to be some adjustments of the front of the box. IMO: This is an important rule that needs to be addressed in ALL associations. Your opinions please!!

Discussion: Prayers for Roger "Doc" Clay

Perl: I do not think I know Roger; but I remember back a few years ago in Pensacola that an Ump Ronnie W. had cancer & we brought him into our circle; ALL the band of Brothers laid hands upon him and the Spirit moved and he is now clean. I was in NC & was praying & speaking of RW & some in the group in that area had heard of the healing......Amazing!!

Every time we see him; he gleems with joy; so the same can happen for Roger.

Lord: he that dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the Shadow of the Almighty; under His wings shall we be shielded; therefore; we the Senior Band of Brothers stand up with prayer in Faith to this condition in Roger and we declare that thru your mighty words that you will send physical deliverance his way.........This We Believe!!!

Discussion: players please respond to rule changes

Patty Mac & others: since MOST SSb players NEVER look at this board, I got a suggestion that I did many years ago with another SAssociation. I wrote a business type letter listing my dislikes about the snowbird rule (was a REAL VAGUE).
I sent it to this specific organization & to ALL of my softball friends indicating that if THEY agreed w/me to forward this to the SA & the RULE was changed.

Discussion: Why Not Have A Players Committee Of Real Players To Over See The Rules

It does not matter your classification: how great your avg is; your strength; how many times U BP; how many HRs U have hit; there is not a PERSON on the planet that can say I will not hit the pitcher when I go up the middle!!

DBOs cause players to think of the middle!
I think (someone can correct me) that SPA did a survey last year about DBO's in any class & the majority voted against it!!

Discussion: players please respond to rule changes

Comparative Analogy:
I think a PPoll is the correct way to go & I have been pressing it for years to ALL SAssociations. We ALL pay to play & we ALL should have some input; democratic, well yes; if we ALL leave, then there will B NO SAssociations.
I have NEVER believed & will NEVER believe that a HR hitter should B punished with a DBO, NO matter the class. Walk or 1 & 1 Up.
Let's do a CA: If you R going to continue w/these rules & allow 12 people out of thousands of members (way below 1%) to dictate the rules; then conside some more rules that need to B administered.
1. HR hitters above limit get DBO's.
2. Fat players like myself that stretch a dbl into a sgl; should B awarded 2B; just for the reason that I am not as fast as other players that can make 2B on the same hit.
3. Slower outfielders should B award an Out whether they catch the ball or not, because they R not as fast as the other fleetfooted players.
4. I/F players that R not as skilled should B awarded a catch, because they R not as skilled as others!!!

Sounds silly!!!! So does the DBO's N ANY classification!!! Sandbagging?? Every time a player renews their card, their class is ID'd on the card; it will B picked up at every tourney. Let their ID number end in M+, M, AAA or AA. When entered on the roster it is evident. ID present players with the additional letters that have to B added at their 1st 2014 tourney & repeated thereafter.

Do a PP: C if the majority wants whatever bat, whatever ball & whatever other rules that R pertinent to the game.

WE R NOT GETTING ANY YOUNGER!!!

Discussion: Why Not Have A Players Committee Of Real Players To Over See The Rules

I hardly ever post; but why did 12 people decide the rule changes when there are thousands of members that spend thousands of dollars (some have been doing this for more than a decade)every year to play in the SSUSA?

With the computer: why could you not take a player poll on ALL these rules? At least: thru simplification; poll every coach & get the ruling of the majority of players on their team.

Would save ALL the flying, meals, gas, motel bill & etc for these winter meetings!!!

Just my $.02 worth. I have posted about the Player Poll for some time; maybe others will step up to the plate with me & see this thru.

Discussion: Boaz results from this past weekend

Gadsden: I talked with Joe, the TD & the 52/275 balls will not change as long as this organization has its present owners; but irregardless, this was a very competitive tournament; we used Senior Bats, some even used ASA bats. All around a very good tourney; defense & offensely.

What made it very, very special; the family of the late Mickey Hardin was there & ALL the 60 & 65 teams gathered around them & gave them some love; truly an incredible moment!!!!

I have gone since 1999; I highly recommend. You cannot find a better guy than Joe Cothran.

Discussion: Origin of the Plate as a Strike

I guess I think too much!!! I tried to get an answer for this question a few years back & have asked numerous players & Umps in reference to the plate as a strike.

I am not trying to start a discussion as to whether the plate should B a strike or not; just trying to find the origin of the plate being a strike.

We play ALL of our years with the plate as a ball; then we hit SSBall & it becomes a strike. I have done some research & can find NO info.

Does anyone know When & Why the plate became a strike on SSBall?

Steve: I am part of that LX team & the concept was brought about by one of our great team financial organizers, Dan B; he is incredible. I am so glad of the results about your Granddaughter; I do not think there was a dry eye in the whole group at the presentation.
I have been in SSBall since 99 & that is the most moving event that I have ever witnessed. I will never forget it!!!

Glad to hear the awesome report & hope to see happy Mena 6 Flags Pics very soon.

I do believe that there were other teams involved in the whole process; I do not know exactly which ones, but I do want to extend a BIG thanks to my other Band of Brothers.

We are on different teams; yet we are on the SAME TEAM!!!!

Discussion: Tired of breaking bats

Big Mike: "should I switch to utrip bats?..."

I cannot afford to buy any more SBats. I bought a New C Centanarian 30 oz; took about 150-200 BP swings rotating the barrel per suggestions on 7 year old balls (not waterlogged) in warm weather. Then I attended the NSA in Gadsden, Al where we hit the 52/275 & it got a 4" split in 8 swings. Everyone else I have spoken to has had excellent results w/this bat.

I have 2 recommendations: If you can find an Original Velocite (I have owned 18, down to 2); they suit my swing, but are EXpensive. My
2nd suggestion is the Miken Maniac 585. I have owned a stock one since 2007; I swing a 30 oz & have pounded this bat forever in BP & it is a tank (have not been able to find another). These 2 are what I plan to use in SSB w/the only SBat I have left (an orignal ASA model U2). I can't spend $700+ a year.

Good Luck

Discussion: Blood Clot ALERT!!

Something that slipped my mind: Senior Moment; in 11.05 @ the Winter Ft. Myers Tourney; I took a swing & something popped behind the LKnee & I fell to the ground; then a silver dollar size red blood image showed up; figured it was the hamstring. I could not bend my leg w/o falling.

Anyway: anyone who played with me in 05 could see that I ran (more like walked) very slow when I hit; my legs were going. The following year 11.06, I had another Lknee cleaning (orthoscopy);

Now; I do not know if the hamstring & LKnee surgery had anything to do w/the BClot or not; but the Docs did not indicate that it was a possibility, since the BC came 2 years later.

Logic: I would think that if I were inactive, driving or flying a lot, that I'd be more prone to BCs; had no history of BCs in my past genealogy.

Still mysterious: I have never been a bad eater; hardly ever junk foods (on occasion); got a Turtle's metabolism (Hrate about 39-40 BPM); NO one can figure the reason for the BC.

Thanks for the input; I hardly ever post, but wanted to give a headsup to anyone that may be feeling this sort of pain. Need to have it checked!!
