Discussion: interference or not?

Gary19, Do you think it would be interference on a base coach getting hit while outside of the coaching box, provided there is a coaching box? I know in softball there usually isn't one, but usually in baseball there is.

I believe you guys are mixing up the difference between what you refer to as gamesmanship -vs- interference whether it be verbal or physical.
Jeter making pretend he got hit on the hand isn't interference or even close.
You don't need a coach on third most times to tell you when to tag as you can see the ball and the catch. Coaches are primarily used when the ball is behind the runner and you can't see it.
I played college ball and pro ball and back then you would've got one stuck in your ear for stuff outside the gamesmanship category.
Webbie, I agree with you, think as seniors we would've outgrown stuff like verbal interference.
Stick8, the play you describe is gamesmanship not intereference.
I'm all for gamesmanship and I'd certainly rather win with my bat and glove while playing within the confines of the rules.

You bet I care!! If I can buy anything made in the USA I will, even if it costs more. While I realize it's becoming increasingly difficult to buy made in America, I will go out of my way to find it.
Support the USA should be all our motto's. It's a positive step in helping to turn our country around to what it once was.
GOD BLESS THE USA.

Verbal interference! No room for it in senior softball.
Plays like that show a lack of integrity and respect for the game of softball.
Shame on those who would support this type of disception. It's nothing more than another out in the open way to attempt to cheat your fellow competitors.

Gary,
I believe that there are many of us who were hoping that you might be turning over a new leaf going into the new year. That plus you changed your name from Dirty. I can't tell if you're busting our chops or if you're the same old arrogant and sarcastic poster from the past.
The only back peddling you'll ever see from me, might be going back to catch a dumbed down ball coming off one of your dumbed down bats, because I sure ain't intimidated by you.
I wish I could believe that you are always having fun with your posts, but I have my doubts. Let's try and keep it civil.

Gary, Omar is right. The number of posts is irrelavent.
Your reputation certainly isn't spotless by any means and messing with people (taits) doesn't help it.
If you ever hope or desire to have people take you seriously on any of your ideas or beliefs you should conside being straight up with folks. Calling the sky dark blue when someone else calls it blue just allienates people. Have a nice day.

Discussion: What was the greatest moment in your softball career?

It's very hard for me choose a single moment. My teams have won multiple World Championships over the years at various levels and each one is very special. As we age it becomes increasingly difficult to win these as a team. Just to be playing with my team mates and enjoying the friendship and comraderie we share is special. When we win, it validates all the hard work we put in together.
I have received many individual awards and as far as individual awards go, I look at them as an extension of my team. Without my team mates committment, hustle and their excellence, my individual awards don't happen. If you don't succeed as a team (finish in the top three) you don't get selected for All-World, All Tournament or MVP awards.
Let me give you just one of many examples. Playing in a World Tournament. One of my team mates pulled a ham string coming out of the box after hitting a line drive to left field. He crawls on his hands an knees in pain trying to beat the throw from left field. He just beats the throw and is safe. We go on to finish second in that tournament and I make the All World team. Without those kind of efforts from team mates, championships and individual awards don't happen.

Discussion: Has Anybody Tried At Home Bat Swinging Routines?

Gary, Let's not try to compare steroid freaks to Senior Softball Players who are trying to improve their game.
The fact remains that strength training alone will not improve bat speed by itself. This is whether you agree with it or not.

Strength training in itself doesn't automatically increase bat speed.
Muscles are composed of basically two different fiber types. One type is for strength, the ability to move against heavy resistance, endurance and the ability to perform repetitions without tiring. The other type of muscle fiber is for speed, that is the ability for fast muscle contractions.
The bottom line and what people haven't grasped, is that you cannot condition your muscles for speed using the same techniques you use to train for strength. You may think you are making your muscles faster with strength training but, your muscles always know the difference.
One of the best ways to condition muscles for speed is with isometric training using resistance bands. This type of training targets the fast twitch muscle fibers which are often ignored with basic strength training.
This along with Mighty Mike's regimine is another way to increase bat speed.

Hey Gary,
Nothing wrong with the last out being the CR. Except if the last out is injured or one who usually has a CR. I am against hand picked speedsters for the purpose of circumventing the rule. As I have said, most of the rules are for the benefit of the players.
It's the ones that are put in for economic reasons and rules that people take advantage of that need to be tweaked.

Enviro-Vac,
Whatever you do, don't tell "Dirty" that you used a CR for a guy that had a little pain while running.
I hope your friend returns to full strength next year.

Attendance is no doubt down in most tournaments across the country. It's not because of what a very few believe to be the bat/ball combo.
If you think so, then you haven't played any USSSA or ASA the past few years where dumbed down bat/ball combo's are the norm. Attendance at these tournaments is worse. These two organizations offer a very limited Senior program at best.
The Senior game is doing just fine. Lots of chatter about rules. Most of these rules are good and some are better. These rules just need some tweaking for improvement.
There will always be those who try to circumvent the rules for their benefit, which is why they need to be continually looked at to benefit the entire Seior community.

softballnuts,
It's not surprising your kness hurt after swinging. Meniscus does not heal. If torn they must be repaired. There's no blood supply to the meniscus, only nerve endings which is why they hurt. If the tear stays together there will be little or no pain. When the tear seperates is when the pain comes in. When swinging the torque on your knee seperates the tear. I've had both kness done. Not bad at all. In and out all in the same day. Walking almost immediately. Back to full activity in maybe 3-5 weeks depending on the size of the tear. You should think about getting them done at some time because the pain isn't going to go away. You also could try a knee brace to help.
Good Luck.

Webbie25, good comments, but as long as people keep complaining about the Major Plus level and getting moved up, those in power should keep looking for ways to improve the system. To accept the status quo accomplishes nothing.
Both sides have legitimate points of view. As I said before I don't know what the answer is but there is one out there.
I also don't think there's a required number of people needed in an area or state to field a quality team. All my team mates live within 40 miles of each other. I see your point, but you can't open up pandoras box to help a guy travel 5 miles to play. Rules are usually set up for the majority and not to cater to the minority.
Your right too, we've been playing against money for 35-40 years. It was actually worse back then bcause the tax laws were different and more money was being spent.

Duke, You're way to sensitive. If you think I'm going to let you take a pot shot at me first without commenting your mistaken. Your verbage is very antagonistic. If you paid attention to an earlier post, I agreed with you. So no, I have no issues with you just your attitude. Excuse me if I didn't totally agree with you, didn't say what you wanted to hear or struck a nerve.
You are the one that started the thread in the first place. You had to expect to get some comments back. At least you have nothing else to say on this subject. You'll be back. Have a nice Holiday Season.

Duke,
What homework! What part of "unofficial listing" is confusing to you?. I really don't care if they've broken up or if they don't exist anymore or if they're from the east coast or the west coast.
They're listed and maybe the organizations should get them off the lists so guys like you don't get confused.
I guess it's difficult for them to do that though. Your team Double Edge is a perfect example. You got moved up on November 1st and then you told us you're breaking up less than 3 weeks later, mostly due to extended injuries and unable to decide which tournaments to attend, and players leaving to other States. Wow, that's a prety quick exit from the Major Plus level. Heck many of the tournament schedules weren't even complete yet. Oh well, good luck where ever you end up. When/if you win again, you'll get moved up again. No problem for you though. Just break up and play with another team.

Discussion: Then There Were 14!

Duke, Unofficially there are 19 Major Plus teams listed in SSUSA and 12 Major Plus teams listed in SPA. You are right, there aren't many teams to play. Major Plus teams consist of the best money can buy.
There are very few teams in the country that can compete on the Major Plus level. Major Plus teams are basically nothing more than All-Star teams. Gathering players from multiple cities and multiple states. You want to level the playing field then put in some more resideny restrictions. Get rid of the touching state rule. No players from touching states for a start. See how many Major Plus teams you'll have then. There's already at least one Major Plus team in the country who has said they would lose 4-5 starters and couldn't compete if some of these changes were made.
DD was right, you do worry way to much about ratings.
Combining divisions doesn't do a thing to solve the problem. It just gives the Major Plus teams more teams more to beat up on. Just because a team wins a Major championship doesn't mean they are good enough to compete at the next level. Been there done that.
Should the NCAA division II baseball champions be forced to play division I the next year after they win a national championship? I think not, for the obvious reasons. They won't win. It's got nothing to do with being the best you can be. I believe we are all trying to be the best we can be and get better or we wouldn't be wasting our time playing in national tournaments trying to win, while spending a lot of time and money doing so.
I'm not afraid to play anybody because I want to try and beat the best. Even if I know I don't have a very good chance. Although a steady diet of getting my but kicked isn't my idea of fun. It also doesn't mean I'm a whiner, afraid of competition, lack the drive to be the best, or any other reason you can come up with.
Facts are facts and the fact is that very few teams can afford to compete at the Major Plus level as it exists today. What's the answer? I'm not sure. It surely isn't telling people to just show up and play. That might be OK for the few Major Plus teams in the country but, not for everyone else.
