Discussion: Another thought on home run limits

There're many ideas in this thread. Good conversation. Here some of my thoughts so just read'em and don't take them personal.

1) Home runs should never be outs no what age group you are in. Kids to seniors. No one should be penalized for a home run. The one up rule evens things out no matter what age group or level you play.

2) There seems to be a few people who think that the home run is running rampant in senior softball. My team has only reached the limit once all year. I have only seen a few games where the limit was reached all year. What's the problem? If they're walks after the limit, who cares. Swing away.

3) Many think that senior bats turn everyone into a home run hitter. Not true. There's nobody on my team, down to a man that hits home runs now and didn't hit them when they were young.

4) How do you sand bag? If you win a national tournament, you get moved up. Ok, so some teams will break up and form new teams. That only works until they win again and get moved up again. The residency rules are as much of a problem as anything else. You're allowed to use players from touching states. Nothing more than All-Star teams. Change the residency rules and you'll solve a lot of problems. How about a 100 mile radius or only from your own state?

5) Age brackets will always be a problem. It's should be apparent that the younger your team is in any age bracket, usually means you have a better chance of being competitive. Of course there are exception to everything.

6) ISSA is looking to eliminate the Major+ level next year unless a team specifically requests to play that level. Now won't that be interesting?

gary c,

Read the following last four posts from you:

"read joey joe's rambling posts then tell us who goes on and on saying the same things over and over
"lively bats and ball are a must for are game" BLA BLA BLA then you come in here and rag on mad dog.
Your boy just had a thread closed after attacking everyone who doesn't agree with him.
Read his post on this thread he brings politics and religion on to a softball site.
The personal attacks were started by your ideal Joey Joe
some of us come back at him some hide he is the bully in the school yard and when someone stands up to him he cry's and wants everyone to protect him."

"Podunk Joe
You are not the softball community. So please don't represent yourself as the word of God.
You live in fantasy land surrounded by the United States.
There is a big world out there of normal everyday people who
don't think like you do.
So have you little tournaments and tell each other how great you are and leave us alone in the real world.
30 bucks for a tournament tell me where to send you a back up ball so you don't have to chase foul balls before you can start playing again"

"Why Joey Joe are you threatening me with physical violence?
Not very Frisco of you. I guess the flowers in your long white hair must have died.
You wine to Dave then threaten me and call mad dog everything in the book. HYPOCRITE
A133 one of Joey Joes minions
NY Frisco one in the same I know why you think like Joeystine"

"saddle, I did not know you were one of JOEY JOEY'S minions read your boys posts before you attack anyone else.
We call guys like you and einstink SOTTBALL WHORES"

Are you kidding me? It's somewhat comical reading your use of the english language. You seem to be a very hateful person. I feel sorry for you.

mad dog, read the qoutes below.

"So and so was really spinning the ball today and that is why he was getting so much distance. That's for home run hitters and contests."

"Ever look at his video appearance one of
Ken Van Bogart's monster hitting videos?
Says AIM dead center on the ball
and it maximizes your chances to get on base.
miss a little high, top spin
Dead center, crushing stupid knuckleball
miss a little low, back spin and out."

Pay particular attention the word "AIM". Chances of hitting it dead center all the time is slim and none.

"Art Eversole tip 4 to quote him "under spin makes the ball carry farther, than a direct hit into the ball or a top spin strike.strike the ball just below the imaginary equator of the softball to produce the proper under spinning action."

All these basically say the same thing. Dead center = knuckle ball, Above center = top spin, below center = back spin for max distance.

What's so difficult to understand about that? Do you think the Long Haul Bombers are trying to get top spin or hit dead center for distance? Duh!
Did you watch the USA against Canada? After the USA ran out of home runs, do you think they were trying to get back spin? Duh! They were hitting rockets either dead center or with top spin to keep it in the park.

Do you think a singles hitter should be looking to get back spin for distance? Duh!

Keep playing with the kids, maybe they'll listen to you keep patting yourself on the back.

4x4,
Another calm non degrading post. Well done.

Look for the 52 ball Senior Softball circuit run by mad dog coming to your area in the not so near (never) future.

Maybe he should play with the kids all the time. Then we wouldn't have to listen to him.

Great job on your last two posts. Well said and to the point.

I kind of think some folks see your lips moving but, don't hear a word that you're saying. Somehow that doesn't surprise me in todays world.

Discussion: LET'S FIX THE TOP--Part Two

G19,
Again you can only hide so long. If you win at the AA or AAA level, you'll be playing with the big boys.

If I'm a legit competitor, winning at 11.2 can be just as good as 10.9. It depends on my level. Using the school analogy, why do you think they have different levels in sectional and state playoffs?
Chances are the lowest level competitor isn't ever going to beat the highest level competitor no matter how much they try to improve. Therefore the 11.2 is just as good as the 10.9 based on the talent/ability level that you are.

College is much more than just about different scholarship rules. Another bad analogy. It's also about talent and grades to name a few.
Most DIII athletes will never be able to compete at the DI level no matter how much they work at it even though they both put their pants on he same way.

Enough said, this is counter productive to the issue being discussed.

Gary,
Another bad analogy with school kids. 12th graders don't play against freshman.

Softball is set up with age groups and talent levels. You play within your age group and talent level.
I'll bet a "AA" champion is just as proud as the Major+ champion of their accomplishments and they should be.

The kid in track that runs the 11.2 because he might be from a small town or a small school still deservs to be a champion. That's why they have divisions and levels.

I guess your entitled to your opinion, but in my opinion it don't make no sense.

Pricer,
No offense taken what-so-ever.

Yes, I have played since the 70's. Played "A", "Major", in the old APSPL pro league and the old NSPC to name a few. So I've seen it all and played against the best.
I've seen balls hit 400 ft' in the old days. A good aluminum bat with a very good ball is dangerous as well. Many players got hit and hurt in the old days as too.

We have a choice, like it or not in todays world.
Most all of this crap is about our sue first and ask questions later society in which Gary agreed with.
Heck Gary, you told me I was 100% correct.

Pricer, please don't compare a grandchild to an adult. It's not even close.

mad dog,

ASA and USSSA in NY don't use the 52 ball. USSSA uses the 40 cor gold dot. A piece of junk. ASA uses a 44/375 but use junk bats.
There cetainly isn't a lot of Senior tournaments offered by either of these organizations and there certinly isn't a lot of teams flocking to play in them either.

Wonder why?

Maybe you should start a 52 ball Senior Softball circuit.
I never heard the staff say they thought the game was to dangerous. Just you.

Your right Gary.
It's a shame and has nothing to do with bats or balls. It's a product of what our society has become. Blame sombody else and try to make a quick buck doing it. Goes way beyond the softball field.

Discussion: Waivers

Waivers are just a way for the organization to CYA because of what our country has become where everyone's first thought is to sue someone else. Money hungry lawyers just waiting to take someome to court.

Haven't seen any pitchers get hurt this year. With or without equipment. I've seen the 20-40 year old kids wearing face masks and shin guards both pitching and in the field in both USSSA and ASA. It ain't mandated there and waivers aren't needed. Just proves to me that you can get hurt no matter what level you play or what equipment you use. Injury is inherent with sport.

Run limits, home run limits and run limits are pushed by the organizations. Interested in speeding up the game. Hell, we have all those rules in our local leagues just for that very reason.

You qualified for the TOC.
You were the #1 seed for this tournament.
Your record was 5 wins and 1 loss.
In pool play you lost 15-14
In pool play you won 23-11 and 24-11.
In bracket play you went undefeated, winning three straight.
You won 16-11, 22-8 and 17-16.

Pretty nice tournament.

Been in your shoes. The price for winning is getting moved up. Now you just have to prove you do or don't belong in order to get moved back down. Good luck.

Gentlemen,

The staff has missed the point on this thread started by Gelpas. The point and question was: Why does it take so much longer to post scores and results for this organization than the others? In this day and age, it just ain't that tough and we're reasonably confident they are the slowest.

Well Webbie25,
Now you know of two that'll quit travelling if we ever go to junk equipment. I'm not going to spend my time and money or my sponsors, to play with restrited equipment.

Why do you think ASA and USSSA has nothing to offer seniors on a national level as the elite senior organizations do? It's because they use lousy equipment.
I get enough of that in our local leagues. ASA bats, 40 core balls, 9 to 8 scores, all home runs are outs. Boy is that a lot of fun.

I've played in three tournaments so far this year. Nobody has gotten hurt and nobody has reached the home run limit.

Discussion: why does it take so long to put the results in for a tournament

Loudoun County dates were May 17-21. The office found enough time to finish the preliminary field assignments for Phoenix in October and sent out a post for this on May 25th. Is that more important than the results from Loudoun? There's plenty of time for field assignments. There gonna change anyway.

Sure Dave is a great guy and works hard, but in this day and age, waiting for paperwork (?) is unacceptable. Excuses are many, but results are what's required. With todays technology these kinds of things should be a non issue.

Suggestion... Make better use of todays technology and allow more people access to help you guys out in the office.

Players shouldn't be the ones reporting results, but they often do and thank you to those who take the time and effort to do so.

There also always seems to be enough questions around the same subject, so obviously it's an issue. A complacent attitude doesn't improve things, but and attitude of continuous improvement does. Work on it folks.
