Discussion: AAA HR rule question

Just finshed playing today in Scottsdale . I enjoyed having time off to play and wanted to get in some practice. This group plays Tues and Fri. in PHX area. about 35 guys showed up and we played on two fields splitting groups from younger to Older. I enjoyed playing the rules today of starting 1-1 count with also having to hit ball fair with 2 strikes. No extra pitch to waste. First thing I noticed was batters were aggressive to hit 1st pitch and 1st game was finished after 7 innings in less than an hour. Was really great to see batters being ready to hit and as a pitcher I loved if batter looked at first pitch and had two strikes. I than had a option of throwing several different pitches and batter understanding that a foul ball would be an out and being ready to swing his bat. 1-1 is a no brainer for speeding up game, as I have said in past Batters looking at 1st pitch will result in 42 extra pitches (6 pitches per inning times 7 innings That's if only 3 batters per team bat per per inning.) at least being thrown without a swing of the bat. 42 pitches at 30 seconds a pitch adds up to 21 minutes. 10-20 minutes being saved will make 7 inning games possible. Just a thought, I will bet outfielders etc will be glad to have less time on field and heat to watch batters be a statue for 1st swing. Happy New year

Discussion: Best leadoff hitter

With some time for time to think and dream with school out for 2 weeks I was thinking as a pitcher who was the best leadoff I ever faced. Kenny V. of AZ ROUGE and second would be Cisco who now plays 60's. I count it a major chore to get Kenny out once a game much less ever more. Cisco's bouncing around and being a great hitter makes himma close second place. I guess if I could put a complete player together it would be leadoff Kenny with Mike Manna's speed 55 CJS Express, (fastest guy I have ever saw run) and Steve Imlays power and positive attitude. What a player that would be. Talk later wife is calling. GI

CJS Express hopes to play 55 AAA in Tucson but that may depend on how Coach Barry is doing with his recovery. If we do not play several of us who are turning 60 soon might be looking to play that weekend in another division.

Mark (Webbie) I could not agree with you more than your statement about 3 homeruns being enough. I am still having work on my neck (looking at fence) from the worlds in vegas when the team that won AAA 55 out of Texas hit 3 homeruns in 1st inning with batters 1-2-and 4 Imust have walked 3rd batter. To make it worse they hit many more singles over the fence in their at bats and also several off fence. Maybe we could have given them a better game without all those extra singles. They matched your Major plus team with power and I am sure they will do well in Major or Major plus next year. To be honest I do not see how playing down can be much fun for any team that wants to compete. I enjoy playing tough teams but really do not enjoy facing a team that even on our best day we cannot beat. This rule will help- I played ball with kids at USSSA level and they had a tougher rule. Hit a homerun and inning was over. We (kids) hit one with no outs and bases loaded. Tough rule but sure kept teams from playing down. Also one time was automatic out rest of game every time that hitter came up. Something to think about after 3 homeruns. Just be glad I guess we can still be on field in any way. I will be 60 in March and we never know when this could be our last season so have fun guys. GI

Discussion: AAA Home Run Outs

I will have to check with coach on this one but I do not remember a tournament played this year where our team CJS express in 55 AAA hit over 3 homeruns in a game. Most of the time we might get one home run. Maybe that is why we did not win a Senior softball event this pastyear. I agree big time 3 homeruns than all after that should be an out. Cut down on home runs and maybe figure out 1-1 count will speed up games and than maybe we can all enjoy the game at this ripe old age. Kind of like wood bats with decent balls and bats would be alot cheaper. A guy can dream right? HA. Bless all of you for your thoughts. To be honest I just enjoy still being able to play and see you guys on the field. Merry Christmas and God bless senior softball.

dMON I agree with you about the 1-1 pitch. As a pitcher I know that most times a batter will not swing on a 1st pitch. So the way I figure it that is 6 batters per inning looking at least at 6 extra pitches. 7 innings add up to 42 extra pitches being thrown at least often without a swing. If you figure around 3o seconds per pitch with stepping in and out and other distractions that adds up to 21 minutes.(Could be shorter but at least 10 minutes) several innings. No wonder we stuggle to get in 6-7 innings a game. I hate the rule as a batter and a pitcher. I guess I should be glad to know at least I will not get drilled on the first pitch most times. As for the 3 home run rule for AAA- I also love it . In Vegas worlds we played Texas team that won 55AAA division and 3 of first 4 hitters in first inning hit a home run. They must have hit at least 6-7 more for singles and many off the wall. Would have loved having those extra outs. That kind of power is not AAA level. Sounds more like my buddy Webbie's power. The rest is up to powers that be I just enjoy playing ball against you guys. I am hopeful that the coaches if given a survey will push for 1-1 count if not please stop crying about not getting in 7 innings. Bless all duringg this Christmas holiday, Please keep coach of CJS Barry in your prayers as he is in hospital with some possible injury to two heart valves due to infection. I talked to him today and wish him the best. GI

Discussion: Maybe try this before adding a pitcher screen????

I would love to see 1-1 count - so tired of watching good hitters look at first strike than complain that we cannot get 7 innings in.If each batter looks at 1st pitch that is a min. of 42 extra pitches if only 3 bat per inning, That adds alot of time to game. I also would enjoy the 3-15 foot arch so we could have more options about flat or higher pitches. I used to play unlimiteds in Indiana in 70's -- tougher game. Throwing my 16-17 foot pitch against Webbie never seemed to hurt him much. HA Last one I pitched him was in sun and he still hit it opposite field for a Home run at Papago.GI

Anyone here who won 55AAA division?. I know New Mexico team beat CJS express to get to finals with Just FOR FUN. Both those teams sure have alot of talent to match a good bunch guys who know how to play the game. I thought 55AAA had a very competive amount of teams.

Discussion: Winter World Charity Golf tournament-Mesa

Thank You Brock and others who have shown interest in helping with the Sunshine Acres Program. This home depends on donations and does not ever turn any child away for lack of funds. They will be building a new home soon for 10 more girls and this will make it possible for 80 children to live at program. Aunt Vera (As we called her) who died 5 years ago as the founder always talked about one day having 100 children here. With God's direction I believe it will happen. I talked to terry and Dave Sunday and they are looking for more ways to help next year. Maybe if we let you guys know sooner you could plan on playing fri. Who knows maybe one day we will have Thursday set up just for senior softball golfers. Senior Softball has really come on board to show a desire to help our children and I am thankful as you say that we are thinking ahead instead of waiting till adults to get involved.I will make sure you all are aware next year by the summer months about the tournament and Dave was very open to working the schedules so I could play in morning and still get for 2nd tee time supper and auction events. Bless all of you and I hope that in future if you get the chance please take time to take a tour of home in Mesa. It is called Miricle in the Desert for a reason . See you in 2013. GI

Just a quick report to all that talked about the Golf event. The team that Terry and Senior softball covered the entree fee for today $600.00 was over all 1st place and donated the 1st place award $500.00 back to Sunshine Acres Children's Home. Cannot get better than that. Had around 200 golfers today and first time we ever filled our Morning round . Auction and supper by Carrabba's with Channel 12 MC- Went well and I feel very blessed for the help of so many to help the 70 children at the home. You guys made me proud today- See you on the field tomorrow. GI
