it is now a done deal that SSUSA has taken the pitcher pretty much out of the defensive part of the game.
what position will be made inept next time.
i pitch when i play so now the defense pride is gone. just pitch and watch the others play. going fishing instead of playing the game i have loved to play since 1965 might be over.

bye bye miss american pie drove my chevy to the levee !!!!!!!!!!!!!

LP,

You are absolutely correct. I just cannot understand what planet some of these rules people are on. Definitely not this one. Besides their safety pitch(no pun intended, LOL!), their thinking is SO off and full of stupidity and no thought. Just make it MANDATORY to wear a mask and chest protector or they cannot pitch. The way it is now, we can be hit like a hunter shooting a duck as we move to another position to field after every pitch. I see that as more of a possible injury to the pitchers.

Their illogical assumption that this will be as easy to call as a fair or foul ball, has already been proven to be a joke this past weekend. We already argued about calls all weekend and wasted our short time limit games with this garbage. How the heck is an umpire that has no clue what a 10 or 12 foot arc is, going to accurately make a call on a line drive hit through the no hit zone is the height of the pitcher, when he has gone to field a ball somewhere else on the infield. The answer is IMPOSSIBLE and a GUESS. Is the height when the pitcher is standing upright or in a defensive position? What a disadvantage if you are short. LOL! Guess I will just have to go on a stretching machine, so I can be a foot taller. LOL!

The entire pitching game has become a farce. Honestly, I do not really care to wear a mask, but I was planning on buying some gear for my next tournament, so I would not continue to press my luck. If it takes making a mask and chest protector mandatory, so we can play the game the way it was intended, then let's just do it!!!!!!!!There is already enough senior rules in place for safety, but this one has put the game of playing a real softball game in jeopardy.

Just my opinions!

Amen Andy - we experienced the same thing as you did in Menifee. Your hit was close, but just outside the zone. You were called out, but we lost a double play. Neither outcome was correct, but the ump did his best against this ridiculous new standard. The worst part is that the SSUSA message stated clearly that the rule was to discourage middle hitting. What's next?

I don't have a strong feeling about making safety equipment mandatory, but I sure as hell would use it if I pitched again.

It is my opinion that the SSUSA staff should open up to questions and comments from her constituents, ie. those who pay for her to exist.
Come to one or more of the Open Threads like this one, answer questions to those who couldnt make the rules meetings in Nashville. Hear our concerns and listen to what we want to happen to our game. Listen to us!
Is the SSUSA so arrogant they think we are just sheep and will just go along forever with whatever rules the staff want changed?
I can tell by the tone of whats being written, many of us are very near the line.
Keep the homerun and outs rule. Keep the Ca and Fl regions, but leave the fields of play alone, dont take away any part of our defensive game. Thats exactly what the new Middle Rule is doing. Taking away a critical part of Softball.

Duke, a couple of things. Mandatory gear is just as stupid as the new rule. What is it to you, or anyone, if I choose to play defense with my glove?

Oh, and the game was not intended to be played with Ultras or any other special bat. IF safety is an issue, that is where to start. NOT any other rule changes.

Check out the new post at the top of the page. Staff has added some "Supplemental Information", trying to explain some of the new rules.
Staff even hints at regions in 2011 instead of boardering states.

I only know of two people that attended this mess that actually pitch. One is listed as a voter the other as participating. Both have suffered injuries & both INFLUENTIAL.
I too feel this new zone takes meaning away from the pitchers job. If he can't take the heat get out of the oven. Ground to the head... So, If he catches it over his head is it an out or what? If the ump blinked and didn't see where or if it hit the ground outside the rubber or inside the 2 feet area I guess he will do just that, guess.
If the pitcher gets hit, he still get hit. Gear up.... protect yourself somewhat at least and still do your job.

Does anyone know the rationale that the committee members that led to making up this moronic rule?

Rationale? Say what? Got to be kidding here.
I see NONE.
Moronic rule,.. I can't say anything nice so it's best not to comment.

Perhaps killing off the game slowly, but surely, or
have another great year guys, we'll discuss it again next Dec. Hope you get at least a couple of teams to play against in same age and level.

Just another "well thought out plan". It had to be, they had most of the year to "think" about it.

I anticipate 2 very uneasy years ahead, given my time with ASA doing like wise thinking. But I sure the hell hope it doesn't have the same result.

Seasons Greetings.

Since none of the voting members care to explain their rationale, I guess we can conclude it was of self interest.
I will hold my own conclusions until I hear someone say differently. WITH conviction.

It states above that the new pitcher rule will be as easy to call as a foul ball. I call bull crap on this. Some umpires could not get the old rule right and all that was it had to hit the pitcher and then he had to be in box.
I heard stories of batters being called out because it went over the pitchers head. it is another (bad) judgemnet calls that the umpire will probably screw up again.
Also since you raised the HR limits you might want to start the game with more than 3-4 balls. This way if they are hit out we will have time to try and find them the next inning.
If the rules get to bad, I can always elect to play other places.
Until next year,

turn2,

I have always had the attitude lets play and we will see but I played with

this rule in league last year and it sucks. 28 hopper to pitcher no double play. Ball hit outside zone but pitcher sticks his glove out of zone at least 50% of time called out

So as you can tell this is one rule I dont have to wait and see.

Tell your dad I said hi and wish you and all the family a great holiday.

Regions 2011
This may or may not be a good idea. My team would lose players because we are out of Va. So why would I adopt these rules and then may not be able to play in other organizations because they still have bordering states.
Everbody needs to get on the same page with the rules or risk losing teams to other organizations.
Just a thought,

Butch,
I sure will and you have a great holiday also. Hopefully we will see you guys around. Don't forget about Manassas or Salem. They are using good balls and those alful senior bats.
Before long they might eventually take gloves off of the better defensive players.
Happy Holidays,

LOL I hear ya taits. Since every rule has an intent I'm just curious as to what that intent and the rationale behind it is. I don't suppose anyone will come on here and offer one but I hope I'm wrong on that.
If they're worried about pitchers getting hit then either get rid of the ultras (or comparable bats) or go back to making an out of the park ball a single after the hr limit has been achieved.

If you make the HR's a single this will not stop the pitcher from getting hit. I was in the Smokies watching the yong guys play and they had unlimited home runs. I watched one teams pitcher get nailed twice in the same game.
These guys had unlimited home runs so why did the pitcher get hit then?
Our division (major plus) gets 10 home runs now. This is a plenty and way too many for our team.
Lets play ball

Turn2 the only true way to prevent a pitcher from getting hit is if a screen is put in front of him and he stands behind it. And putting that into the senior game is mindless imo.
Your right in that if we go back to the old rule of a single after the hr limit is achieved pitchers are still subject to get hit. But I contend that some batters will still go for hitting it out if they know it's a single. If they know it's an out they're going to shoot it down and the first place they look is the middle.
And I agree-lets play ball. Get rid of the middle rule

stick8,
I'll go out and cut off the limb here, down I go...
I believe the choices that were available for the meeting were only;
1. Keep the PPR, which we do not like and does nothing .
2. Reword it, which they did still nothing different
3. Make some outrageous change in equipment choices: A. bats B. Balls
The vote was what it was, a rewording of the rule.
You mention get rid of the Ultra, that would have really, a bad backlash from Miken, who is a big sponsor here. With the bat there is also the ball. You know where that would go.
I'd be against the HR's as singles flat out. I'm against punishing any batter for any well hit ball, no matter what ever level or age he's at. Period.
Definitely don't like the outs, can live with walks and I prefer them to singles only because it would prevent an unforced run. Kind a give and take situation. Would like to see the one up rule over singles though.
Seasons Greetings.

taits, Miken sells much more than just Ultras, and their Freaks I have used are very good bats. So why would they care if Ultras were banned, they offer plenty of other choices that seniors could still buy.

Why can't we live with Utrip bats and 44 COR balls? Plenty of life in that combo for the guys who are actual power hitters, and for the guys who aren't they probably never were so what can they complain about? Not to mention the "lesser" Mikens still have ridiculously large sweet spots for those guys who don't hit as well and still want technology to do for them what they cannot for themselves.

And God forbid seniors actually practice, workout, and try to improve on their own.

Taits, I'm not so sure Miken would backlash if the ultras were banned. Like Dirty says they make plenty of other good bats that are hot right out of the wrapper. Ultras were banned a few years ago for the kids and Miken didn't backlash. There's no reason to think they would if senior ball banned them. jmho

stick, I agree completely.

The backlash would not come from Miken, but rather from a large bunch of insecure seniors who need their Ultras to feel good about themselves.

Not trying to be mean with that statement, but what else is the reason? They like how hard and far they can hit without having to really work at it. Not everyone, but waaaaay too many. I see it all the time.

I agree totally Dirty. Although I can understand the self-satisfaction they get out of how hard and far they can hit a ball, winning games means much more to me than seeing how far I can hit a ball (which isn't very far-lol). I could have a great game by going 5-5 and if our team loses I'm not a happy camper. I'm not so sure some others would feel the same way.

stick you hit it on the head,i would rather go 0- for and win the game than like you said 5-5 and lose.i think u-trip bats with present ball would be doable.
