| March 15 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | friday play who in the 60's(mostly affected)like the friday play for just the regular type tourney's,with the"oh you might have to play a game on sunday also".i just turn 60 and this is being done for just about all our tourney's this yr looks like.why does our age group have to foot the bill,a lot of the 60's still work full time and have to take vacation days away from the family to go play ball,also the added expense of another day stay for the maybe 1 game on sunday.why can't we get this done on a saturday and sunday,even if it means playing a game under the lights. |

| March 15 Jawood Men's 50 943 posts | r They do this in the 50's too. It's ridiculous! Even in tournaments with just a few teams, they make us play meaningless seeding games on Fridays. Any division with less than 10 teams in it can easily start on a Saturday. |
| March 15 Ho 301 posts | r Speaking as a tournament director (2010 Buckeye Classic), you are right. We are guilty this year of doing it (Friday/Saturday. Our problem is FATHER's DAY is (and has been)the following Sunday and that seems to be taboo. We also thought about Friday night games but the fields are taken by the City Rec Leagues. So what would you suggest for next year, since we are going two weekends and including 55's. (1. Try and play night games on Friday plus Saturday (2. Play the entire tournament on Saturday (3. Play through the first two rounds of the tournament on Saturday and finish on Sunday. I will pay attention to your suggestions and see what we can do for next year. We do have 16 AA/AAA teams coming to the Buckeye Classic this year but a lot of others could not attend because of work. Thanking you in advance for your suggestions. Ho |
| March 15 berger Men's 70 66 posts | r This is not only a SSUSA issue. It's across the board for 60's. Our team just went 60 this year also. Never had such extensive Friday play until this year. We've got our schedule figured. 12 total tournaments: 5 with SSUSA (3 of them 3-day tournaments). 5 with SPA (3 of them 3-day tournaments). 1 ISA -- a 3-day tourney. 1 LVSSA -- a 3-day tourney. Not all of these 3-day tournaments are Fri-Sun. 1 is Thurs-Sat, and 1 is Sat-Mon. So, 9 out of our 12 this year are 3-day tournaments. Last year, when we played 55, we also played 12 tournaments.....with most of them being the same tournaments as the ones we're entering this year. 3 of them, last year, were Fri-Sun tournaments. #6, I also definitely agree with you. 70% of our players still work.....which means players have to take vacation to go to these 3-day tourneys. And "oldbie", I also agree with you, I think more players' wives would be able to accompany the players if more of the tournaments were Sat-Sun only. Not to mention, more players themselves would be able to go. I am carrying more players on my roster this year -- mainly because I already know a number of them can not play all of those 3-day tournaments. And what do you think it does for me, as manager, having to try to be at all of them. |
| March 15 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | r Assn's have a lucrative deal by playing in Fri, Sat and or on Sun. The more time teams there the longer the money flows in the area. And you usually need to arrive on Thurs, so gravy is added to the mix. Bad weekends for t's are; mothers\fathers day, Easter, Thankgiving, X-mas, New years & Maybe halloween. Rates are highest on Fri\Sat, so you know at least one and usually both days will be there to play on. If 3 days are needed why not sat, sun, & mon ? Leave after work Fir and take off that next Mon. What ever it is, it will not make every one happy. |
| March 15 LP 317 posts | r same here about the friday play, all of our players still work.so if we want to got to phoenix,or vegas. we have to save our vacation days. so SPA is out for sure,and maybe the ssusa in dallas. |

But do not understand it for the other tournament. Were playing in Spa this weekend in Georgetown and I understand there only a handful of teams in the entire tournament.Talked to several teams and they all told me the same thing..couldn't get off work for this one...Spa are you listening ?Only a handful of teams.Sad ! |
| March 16 LP 317 posts | r i dont know if it would work or not but, why doesnt the assoc's play some divisions one weekend then play the others the following weekend, might get a better turnout? then the guys could save there vacation days for the world and national tournaments. |
| March 16 Swampy 24 posts | r Most everyone of the first 3 age groups still work. Speaking for my group, I think there was only one tournament last year where we had 7 teams, and the rest usually had a max of 5. I realize local businesses making money is a concern, but why can't they play a couple of seeding games on Saturday morning. Start the regular part of the tournament on Saturday afternoon, and progress with the remaining games on Sunday. I think the number of teams in a division should dictate if you need to start on Friday, not a blanket decision to start everyone. 10-12 tournaments a year, having to take off work on Thursday and Friday, makes it tough! |
| March 17 stever Men's 70 99 posts | r Its a matter of logistics more than anything. Assuming you have a four-field complex, the first games are at 8AM and the last ones start at 5PM (since we don't want to play at night), you can get in 28 games a day. If you have 4 divisions (50, 55, 60, 65) and each division has five teams in it, and you play two seeding games and a double elimination bracket, you will need to play roughly 72 games. That means it takes at least 3 days to play the tournament. Logic says that you play the 50 & 55's on the weekends, which takes up 36 of the available 56 game times. Also, most people want to get out of there as early as possible on Sunday and no one wants to play at night. Unfortunately, that means the older brackets (60, 65) get pushed earlier into the week. It's strictly a matter of percentages...there are fewer players in the 50/55 that are retired than in the 60/65. All this doesn't even take into account the younger (40) or older (70) brackets, weather and unforeseen problems. Unless you can have 50/55 one weekend and 60/65 another weekend there is little room to maneuver, and that creates a totally different set of logistical problems. So give the TD's a break. I'm sure they'd rather spend 3 days in a motel running a tournament than 5 days. |

Most if not all told me they were retired and didn't mind playing, Thursday - Friday as they mostly could be back home for the weekend. I for one have no problem playing at night as do some of my team mates. There just has to be a better solution.I am heading to Georgetown this weekend to play in a SPA tournament that has 8 teams, doesn't make sense to start on Friday and I live in Spicewood, not that far to drive. |
