| May 28 Rondo 2 posts | Individual Awards Can someone explain to me the reason for presenting individual awards, All Tournament,Best Defense,etc at Senior Tournaments. These awards are meaningless and only create hard feelings among players. If you need an award for your performance at a tournament than you are playing this game for the wrong reason. Softball is a team sport. I would have no problem if Senior Softball did away with individual awards. What do you think ? |

| May 28 Rondo 2 posts | r I have played in both SSUSA,SPA and Half Century Tournaments this year and they all had individual awards, All Tourney, MVP,etc, not team awards, except for a team trophy. |
| May 28 Paco13 424 posts | r Rondo, I believe that recognition is always good thing and those that have a good weekend either hitting or playing defense should be recognize accordingly. Now jealousy within a team is a different thing and if at this age U have team members that get jealous because somebody got a personal award, my friend that is very sad. Granted that we play the game the enjoyment and camaraderie of it and not for the accolades or $5.00 medallion…however being told that U did a good job is always good to know and if a the $5.00 token of appreciation comes with it…who cares. |
| May 28 Robo2 238 posts | r I like the idea of celebrating one or more of my teammates for winning the award. It is an added bonus to recognize their efforts. I agree with Paco13; if one has players on your team that gets jealous of another players success then find another team because that is not a "team". |
| May 28 Sisavic 190 posts | r Having the players vote for individaul awards works for my team. I've done this 2 ways: (1) hand a line-up to the players at the end of the last game and tell them to mark their top 3, 4 or 5 (depends on the number of All Tournament patches we've won), and (2)ask for email votes after I send the team stats and a tournament summary. Number (2) works best, but delays giving out the patches until the next tournament. PS St George gives only individual awards (like the Olymics)and no team award - what do you think? |

What does cause hard feelings is that in the tournaments where I played where such awards were given out, they weren't chosen by the TD or anyone else who claimed to have seen all the games. They were submissions by the team manager/coach on who should be selected from his team. This choice has caused hard feelings, not jealousy of someone playing well in a particular tournament. |

| May 28 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | r we go strictly by on base %.highest gets mvp and so on,yeah it doesn't take in the defensive side(me i think should be considered)but works for us. diehard i'm all for that too,being a new england native and true boston fan thru and thru.:):) |
| May 28 ffdonnie Men's 60 137 posts | r Paco13 said it very well. I enjoy challenging myself to play the best I can, and shoot for one of those patches. If I just wanted to drink beer and screw around I would just stay home playing league. For me, going to tournys playing with and against the best and maybe earning an All Tourny patch is what it's about. I like the way ssusa does it, leaving it up to the qualifying team to decide. If you have jealousy on your team then maybe a team meeting is in order. This only leads to much bigger issues, been there done that. |

My wife surprised me with a plaque with my all-tourney medal and patch at Phoenix Worlds last year. It is nice to be recognized by your team and the tournaments. I can see where the meaning is diminished if there are only 4 or 5 teams in the bracket, however. Maybe a 10 team minimum would be meaningful. |
| May 30 DoubleL10 Men's 70 907 posts | r Rondo, I think recognition by your peers is what drives players to appreciate individual awards. Nothing is worse than playing on a team where a person is a vital contributor on both offense and defense and is ignored when awards are made. To me, it would make a player feel unappreciated for making the sacrifices that have to be made to play this game we love. I will also add that on some teams there are a clique of players who will win awards even when they may not be as deserving as others not in the clique. The patches or medals are just small tokens from the TDs of a job well-done. |
