| April 11 MichaelH386 Men's 65 31 posts | Needed hitting instructions !!!!!! Help, I need personal hitting instructions. I don't do well with video DVD's or book instructions, I would like to know if there is anywhere I can go to receive help with my hitting, where they record my hitting and then go over it until I get it right. I live in the Portland, Vancouver area. PS it would be great if someone would open a school that gave instruction to seniors for softball. |

I'm sure there are many more, don't know if they cater to seniors. I would suggest that you hook up with some knowledgable players and hit and hit and hit. Also, think about attending Classic Spring Training in Jacksonville or one of the other events in February. They usually have pros that will work with you. |

| April 14 goforit 97 posts | r MichaelH386, Before you start spending money at a hitting school you should get together with some other senior players in your area for regular batting practice sessions. Practice hitting the ball to all fields and find a comfort zone for your type of swing. It will become easier to take the swing you are comfortable with into a game after a few sessions of practice. If you are a power hitter do the same thing, believe me from the right side of the plate its just as easy for me to hit the ball over the right field fence as the left field fence and it helps me not pop up a pitch that i might try to pull instead of going to right field. Just my thoughts, good luck. |

IF - You have a low batting average, nearly always make an out with runners in scoring position or have no confidence when you step to the plate... - Possible help can be 1. Believe you can hit the ball 2. Practice your belief and do not hit bad pitches in practice 3. Wait for the ball to get to you befor you commit your body to swing by pre-leaning foward, only swing commit when ball gets to you 4. Add follow thru to your swing as you keep your eyes on the ball to impact with a LEVEL swing M-386 this is just a few thaughts that can help you do the basics of hitting. To make them work you will need to practice each week. HAVE CONFIDENCE |

| April 14 Paco13 424 posts | r I am sorry, but I have to be with my buddy Wagon on this one. Dude if at 50 U do not know how to hit...Is probably tooo late. Why start a hobby like softball this late. It takes more than just few swings...Do you need somebody to teach how to catch the ball too. Defense is harder than hitting...I think. Hey is your money and you can do whatever you want with it. Wagon and I are willing to fly out to assist you for a very large fee. LOL. Follow the advise given. Especially the one from Crusher. Just having fun dude, I need help also, but I had the Metro star boys to help me. Good luck. |

| April 15 garyheifner 651 posts | r Mike: I might be wrong but I will always believe the most important key to hitting is eye/hand coordination. In only my 9 seasons in senior softball, I have seen 100s of different looking stances, grips, strides, swings and follow throughs. Live batting practice is great. I don't have that opportunity very often since my team is spread out over the entire Chicago area. Over my 47 years of SB, I almost daily (in season) take the short walk to the park with a bat and about 8 balls. I throw them up and hit them. I then jog to them and do it again. Maybe about 1/2 an hours worth of swings. It has resulted, for me, many successful seasons. I have had comments regarding how consistantly I square up on the ball and hit it hard in tournament play. I think the above has taught me to keep my eyes on the ball(improved by lasik) at contact and not blink, which I think causes many to mis-hit the ball. Maybe give this a try. P.S. Sometimes, I hit tennis balls, smaller target, more concentration, same color. |
| April 16 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | r I agree Gary, eye/hand coordination is a big part of hitting. This can be tuned by bp, hitting off a tee or, as you said, just throwing them up. MichaelH386, there are other things, grip, stride and most importantly, timming, striking the ball when your bat speed is at it's optimum. |
| April 19 Jim4softball 21 posts | r Michael - I spent time this past winter reworking my swing with Jamie Gowdy - Rapid Erectors (Denver 50 Major). He was AWESOME I had to take a loop out of my swing and make it short and compact to the pitch. The results speak for themselves. More power on line drives, back to hitting to all fields, more HR's and a renewed confidence in my game. Thanks Jamie! |
| April 20 Paco13 424 posts | r I stand corrected, Did not know that seniors were willing to spend money on swinging lessons. I personally learned a lot from the Senior Bomb Squad???DVD. Very good on basics. I also used to listen to the best two hitters of Metro stars talked about their swings...you know who you are...and I hit here in the area with Hosea one of the best hitters in the VA beach area...and I also swing on my back yard at least 3-4 times a week. So, Yes we all need help, but I am not willing to spend my money on swinging lessons or fielding lessons. That is the point that I was trying to make. As a senior you should have the basics down pack...just some reminders now and then is all what is needed...and work out. PR Ninja out. |
| April 21 surf88 Men's 65 1000 posts | r H386: All the above have shared tips. Being in snow country, I have been using Topper stretch cords. I do sets of bat swings and focus on rotating my hips. After the cord sets, I swing a weighted bat 25-30 swings. Lastly, I swing the bat I'm going to use in the tourneys same number of swings. Routine seems to help and gets the core and hip flexors use to the rotation. If you need an 800 number for them, let me know. Ed Andrews High Desert Dukes |
