Mad Dog the reason is it just doesn't happen often enough for the powers that be to even consider implementing a rule like that. I would say thrown balls strike runners more often in the leg, arm, back, ankle and foot than in the head.

stick i have seen plenty of head shots from throws,i been on the throwing end of a couple.it is real scarey to say the least.they had a guy die last year in Michigan b/c of a throw to the plate that that hit him(runner) in the head.to me one is enough.....
to get to BG's question,"why weren't they made mandatory to begin with" that is the question he asked, and can't get answered.

Mad Dog I've seen it also and no doubt it's scary but it just doesn't happen often enough. You've been trying to make a case for putting it in now based on one incident. That wasn't the original question from BG.

Very sad puppy, I know we have gone back and forth on many things, but seriously. Are you really that stupid?

stick and I have both answered BG's question numerous times. There is NO need for such a rule. NONE! Just rarely happens. Hardly ever!

What don't, or can't, you comprehend?

what can't you comprehend, why wasn't a rule implemented, along with all other sports that use helmets, that is all he is asking.you saying none is needed is not an answer just an opinion, and i'll let it go at that.....

stick this not just a 1 incident type thing,i have seen cheek bones shattered, concussions from being hit in the back of the head and so on,why not not protect the head, all other ball sports deem fit to do so.

"why wasn't a rule implemented" is the question. I quess we can reverse this and ask why some are implemented. In every walk in life somewhere you can find a reason to make things safer. We don't because in a lot of cases it would be infringing on someone’s right to make the decision themselves, which is what I feel is the case here. Just to get a response or the attention of some of the softball association brass. I think I will dress in full goalie gear, pitch the ball and run towards the plate. I know how ridiculous that may sound, but it would cause a stir and would have to be addressed. Could they tell you can't be overprotective? MD, I will say that you are the voice of reason and in most cases I am not. So thank you. Playing A ball before there was AA or Major taught me an awful lot about respect for the game and integerity. The softball world seems to have lost them both.

pricer that is the question that was asked by bubblegum.

hey don't laugh,i have seen pitchers in full catchers gear pitching.
i really can't say i'm a voice of reasoning, but more like a voice of questioning, the ask why guy....

our rights are infringe on in all parts of our lives now,so what.to help prevent one person dieing or becoming an invalid why not make it mandatory.it is the reason behind all kinds of ads asking for safety of all sorts of things we do....kind of like motorcycle helmets, most states make them mandatory,or like texas does, you must have health coverage if you don't want to wear one.

Mad Dog the answer today is just doesn't happen very often in slow pitch. Why it wasn't originally adopted is something that I cannot honestly answer but I suspect it's along the same lines.

WHY WASN'T A RULE IMPLEMENTED?: This is simply a choice issue for any player who might wish to wear any type of protective equipment (while not pitching), including headgear. The SSUSA Rule Book does not prohibit this election by any player who might individually feel otherwise. Conversely, there is likely very little, if any, current support on the SSUSA Rules Committee for imposing such a rule. There is an inherent level of risk in almost all endeavors of life, and by voluntarily undertaking those endeavors, an assumption of risk is present. There is risk in taking a shower, in driving to the ball park, and in playing slow pitch softball. We believe at this time the level of risk present in running the bases in a senior slow pitch softball game, from a statistical frequency of occurrence, is negligible.

Notwithstanding any of the foregoing, you are more than welcome to attend the SSUSA Annual Convention in Florida in early December to make a presentation before the Rules Committee. Several members took advantage of this opportunity last year in Tucson. Their presence, and input, was greatly appreciated.

stick, staff i understand, your positions, just like bubblegum wonder why.to me saving 1 life is worth it.i have seen numerous hits to the head from thrown balls,so to me it is not a small number of incidents.like i said there was a guy killed last year in Michigan by a thrown ball.i have seen shattered check bones on plays at first with bad throws, just saying.

pup, no one is stopping anyone from saving their own life by wearing a helmet if he so chooses. If he chooses not to, and according to you about to lose his life, what is it to you?

that's not the point,BG just asked why not,not we have to.you would be ok with watching someone die on the field when it could be prevented ????? i would like to feel i have more compassion than that, that's why i would care.

HOW ABOUT this.Anyone who is a member of senior softball of any orginization must not smoke cigarettes. They kill more people each year than softballs do.Make them wear helmets and make them quit smoking.Fair enough. You have the choice for either but dont force it on everyone.

not forcing anyone just asking why not,as the question said.....

oh i do tell people about smoking and do have them stay away from me if possible when they do.yeah some states don't have laws but i do try and put myself where they are not smoking if possible....oh by the way why do smokers have to pay for higher ins rates.....
